Ben considered the Sheriff's concerns and turns to the mom. "Alright, cover him up with a cloak or sumtin. We'll bring him wit us. If Xavier accepts him into the Academy, den he'll finally have a place he can be safe." As he heads out he tells the kid. The sheriff takes Ben Grimm and Lucas Washington downtown, leaving Lockjaw behind with Sarah Anne Jackson. "In all my days I've never seen anyone as messed up in his body as young Lucas," the sheriff ponders along the way, "but there's something about him... Maybe it's the terrible shape he's in, it makes you more aware of how lucky you been yourself--however badly off you might be... Bein' 'round Lucas Washington somehow makes you...feel good."At the sheriff's office, the trio are greeted by a deputy. The Thing is then welcomed to use the telephone at the sheriff's desk. "What are you getting all wokred up for?", asks Thing in puzzlement. Well he wasn't about to let innocents get hurt so he stepped in and blocked the sticks and stones they hurled with his own tough body. "If you're gonna get angry for no reason. Fine, take it out on me. But go home afterwards. Dese other folks are innocent so leave em out of it!" He steeled himself to take the punishment. There didn't seem to be any other way of dealing with the mob since reason didn't work.

Thing saw the rock fly, and the old woman was hurt and down! "Start the car, sheriff. We gotta get her to the hospital fast!" Thing rushed over and picked up Sarah Jackson then jumped into the car. "Go, go!"
