This is the first post for an idea that I've been obsessing about of late (I've mentioned it in another thread). Here's the idea again, in brief: a team made up of the example characters from the Classic Marvel system books. These poor schmucks have been stuck in limbo for decades, getting no love, not even knowing whether they're In-Continuity or not, and I just decided one day to rectify that. I set up some background for 'em, had 'em band together .... hey, why not? Nobody else knows who they are! .... and, well, there ya have it: Obsessive Gamegeek Superteam Go!!!
Now I'm passing on the insanity to y'all MURPG folks. Obsessing in just one system wasn't enough for me, so I've started converting them to MURPG. Lodestone is the first, but there are, let's see, seven more to go.
Oh, and by the way, the Subject of this thread is a bit misleading, in that not all of the Exemplars are from MURPG. The MSH Adventure Game's HEDGEHOG joined in later years, and the team's newest member is none other than MURPG's own beloved BLUE LIGHTNING!
Oh, one last thought (I promise!). I have most of the characters' appearances and personalities roughly outlined, but if anyone has any ideas about this team or its characters, I'd love to steal hear them! Especially, I'd entertain any thoughts on how these guys have been around since the days of Secret Wars yet never been noticed by the general populace! Even the Great Lakes Avengers, no wait, make that the Lightning Rods, wait wait they're the X-something now, even those losers have gotten more coverage than this team, and the Exemplars wanna know why, dang it!
Anyway, I'll be posting more as time allows.

Thanks, andalusi! Nice to know that I'm not a lone freak. And I know, this guy is definitely the comic relief of the team. Still, maybe we can bump up his Stone value a little through the use of creative fudging. Let's see .... - Flight: 5 with the Disadvantage "Maximum Speed 2" (-2 Levels) would allow extra maneuverability and carried weight. - That would also technically require an Invention score of 7, which would require a Technology of 7 as well. (Hey, he's not so totally useless after all!) Maybe we'd better stick a "Modify Existing Technology Only" Disadvantage on the Invention. Otherwise, why didn't he just design a flying suit himself in the first place? - Vehicle Operation could be bumped up to 3, easy. After all, the Pilot Talent supposes that he's fairly capable, right? Right? Fairly? - Plus, the Osprey is also the name of a military aircraft, the V-22 Osprey (a VTOL helicopter/prop plane mix), so MAYBE he's military? Way out of shape and pathetic military, but still. So that'd give him something in common with both L.E.O.P.A.R.D. (tech genius) and Cmdr. Salamander (former soldier) and suggest some more Specialties, to boot! - Anyone who can bluff his way into the Frightful Four MUST have some Social Skills! How about, say, 3, with Specialties like Friendly Goof, Moxie, and .... not Fashion Sense, obviously .... um .... I have no idea. Help me out, here, somebody! - Resources: Typical = Wealth: [1]. Picky but true. - His excess weight might have been muscle once upon a time. Let's give him both the benefit of the doubt and a Toughness of 1, eh? - He COULD even have a low Personal Good Luck Mod, since he was the first person in line at the Frightful Four's recruitment drive. - All of which is a stretch and I know it. I don't know what Stone value this would bring him up to, and my wife will be REALLY ticked if I obsess on it any more tonight, but I gotta think that the Invention alone, even with the Disadvantage, would bring him up to around 40 Stones. By the way, he DOES have a given name: Oscar Kinkaid Jr. I actually looked him up on Marvunapp (the Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe, a really wonderful site): www.marvunapp.com/Appendix3/ospreyfrightfour.htmThanks again, andalusi! Your writeup frees me to try my hand at Cerberus from Realms of Magic. After that it's the team's founder, Mach 1 (no, the other one), then on to the hapless Hedgehog and some character details for Blue Lightning (betcha didn't know that she was a woman, eh?).

Thanks, andalusi! Nice to know that I'm not a lone freak. You're talking to a guy who, when he first had the Ultimate Powers Book, rolled up a superhero with Waterbreathing, noted his hero could choose some other liquid to breathe, and could get an extra power if he could *only* breathe that substance. My character? Milkbreather the Barbarian: he fought crime with a bowl of milk on his head. So, um, yeah, you're not the only freak here. And I know, this guy is definitely the comic relief of the team. Still, maybe we can bump up his Stone value a little through the use of creative fudging. Let's see .... The changes look good, actually. I'll incorporate those in. Although.... - Anyone who can bluff his way into the Frightful Four MUST have some Social Skills! How about, say, 3, with Specialties like Friendly Goof, Moxie, and .... not Fashion Sense, obviously .... um .... I have no idea. Help me out, here, somebody! He auditioned for a bunch of supervillains in a costume he threw together halfassedly. I'd say one of his Specialties should be Cojones Big As Church Bells! I don't know what Stone value this would bring him up to, and my wife will be REALLY ticked if I obsess on it any more tonight, but I gotta think that the Invention alone, even with the Disadvantage, would bring him up to around 40 Stones. Don't think I'll have time tonight, but tomorrow I'll thrown in the changes and see what it adds up to. Has LEOPARD been done yet, by the way? You mentioned another thread exists. That's both impressive and scary. Thanks again, andalusi! Your writeup frees me to try my hand at Cerberus from Realms of Magic. After that it's the team's founder, Mach 1 (no, the other one), then on to the hapless Hedgehog and some character details for Blue Lightning (betcha didn't know that she was a woman, eh?). Excellent: the roster is nearing completion. You know, I think I might work on their first opposing supervillain team this weekend. The "Femme Fatales" is really the only honest choice for a superhero group of the Exemplars' caliber: www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/femfatal.htm#Mindblast

Milkbreather the Barbarian: he fought crime with a bowl of milk on his head. Wow in many good ways. I'd say one of his Specialties should be Cojones Big As Church Bells! Or Moxie. You know. Either one. Has LEOPARD been done yet, by the way? Not to completion, and here's why: fudge as I may, I can't make him work out to fewer than 80 Stones. He's 40 WITHOUT the armor. Hell, the leopard form alone is worth more than Osprey! So please, go ahead and stat him up .... and then, if you'd be so kind, help me figure out what the crap the Osprey is doing on the same team! It's like the Mighty THOR! Guest-starring the Fabulous FROG-MAN!!! The "Femme Fatales" is really the only honest choice for a superhero group of the Exemplars' caliber Good call! I don't know whether I'm proud to say that I actually knew who these gals were without checking the thread. Is that where the Exemplars have been all these years? Fighting the loser third-string villains that got lost in continuity? Rockin'! I'll bet they lost a lot of their Rogues' Gallery in the Bar With No Name slaughter ....

Wow in many good ways. Just because you fight crime doesn't mean you can't also fight osteoporosis, I always say. (Or at least, I imagine I would say if I were a sheepish milkbreathing crimefighter.) Or Moxie. You know. Either one. Yeah, that's probably the better choice in retrospect! Not to completion, and here's why: fudge as I may, I can't make him work out to fewer than 80 Stones. He's 40 WITHOUT the armor. Hell, the leopard form alone is worth more than Osprey! I haven't statted him out point-by-point yet, but looking at the fact that he has body armor AND an alternate form, I'm already seeing how the stones pile up. So please, go ahead and stat him up .... and then, if you'd be so kind, help me figure out what the crap the Osprey is doing on the same team! Well, er, he can fly, see, and is a pretty attractive target what with the goofy costume and all... then again, given Osprey's general lameness, he'd only be good cannon fodder once and then Mrs. Kinkaid would be cashing in on the Exemplars' modest life insurance policy plan. It's like the Mighty THOR! Guest-starring the Fabulous FROG-MAN!!!My wife didn't understand why I erupted into laughter here---that is a team-up that just has to happen now. Maybe the Exemplars need some extra muscle because they for once are going after a competent and dangerous villain, so Osprey says he knows a guy what can call in a favor from the Avengers. The catch is, the guy owes Frog-Man a favor, so like, if Iron Man or Thor help out, Frog-Man gets to tag along, too! Also, they have to help him move out of his apartment on Thursday. Is that where the Exemplars have been all these years? Fighting the loser third-string villains that got lost in continuity? Rockin'! I'll bet they lost a lot of their Rogues' Gallery in the Bar With No Name slaughter .... Scourge was the deathknell for their up-and-coming supercelebrity ventures, that's for sure! That, plus Xavier sued when they started running around in their Exemplar costumes---the big X between two little Es on their spandex cost them millions in trademark infringement, I have no doubt.

DESCRIPTION
Apprentice pet store employee Spike Dexter accepted a delivery of adorable hedgehogs rescued from scientific experimentation. Unaccustomed to dealing with these shy nocturnal critters, Dexter jostled a sleeping hedgehog and came away with a connect-the-dots of spine marks on his hand. He was soon horrified to learn that the insectivorous creatures came from the science hall at Midtown High, where one of the hedgehogs had eaten a dying spider that had absorbed a fantastic amount of radioactivity. Without warning, his body blossomed with spines and fur. Now, sleeping during the day, Dexter ventures cautiously into the night to fight evil as ... the hapless Hedgehog!
A solitary hero by nature, Spike nonetheless recently accepted an offer of membership into an unusual team of strangely unheard-of heroes: the Exemplars! Though he still feels out of place in a group, Spike's combat abilities complement the team's tactics and his tracking skills have proven valuable to his new friends. He also finds himself attracted to Jenny Hopkins, the heroine Lodestone, who seems to reciprocate his feelings. His other close friend on the team is the likeable-but-goofy Osprey, who secretly pities Spike as a "wannabe" super-hero.

All right, try as I might, Leopard ain't comin' in at 40 stones. I'm tempted to just write him up and forget about the stone count.
He really could just go solo and do fine, just like Stevie Nicks did with Fleetwood Mac. Except for the analogy to work, Fleetwood Mac would need a guy who didn' t anything except play a kazoo solo now and then to represent Osprey.
Edited to add: By the way, I was thinking it would be a shame to write up the Exemplars and the Femme Fatale (I'll get to them, I swear) and never run them through anything....

Well, I dunno about Fleetwood, but I think of Osprey as the Yoko Ono of the Exemplars. Yeah, I'd say go ahead with LEOPARD if you're willing. Damn the stones count! Full speed ahead! You're .... you are gonna .... w - wr - write up the ...... the Femme Fatales?!?!? Ye GODS, man! Think of the consequences! There are some things that Man was not meant to do! Many involve Spam or ukeleles, but not all. I may be digressing. Okay, yeah, I'm definitely digressing. It's just my conscious mind trying to deal with this concept. I may need a moment. Yike. Anyway, I have Mach 1/Quetzal statted on paper, and that would leave only Blue Lightning, for whom (correct me if I'm wrong here) I believe there are already MURPG stats somewhere. She just needs some rounding out and we're good to go! As far as actually RUNNING these schmucks? Well, my players have demanded that they guest-star in my live game, but I'm not much of an online player myself. Feel free to go wild with 'em if'n ya wanna! It would be cool to see how the little scamps turn out in the big bad world. *snif* Now I'm gonna cry, dangit. (Oh, and if you might try roping Pirate Spice into this. He's got one hell of a twisted sense of humor, as I recall. No grasp on reality at all, that one. In a good way.)

Well, I dunno about Fleetwood, but I think of Osprey as the Yoko Ono of the Exemplars. Good point. I know I'd have serious thoughts about taking my act solo if someone like Osprey were on my team. Yeah, I'd say go ahead with LEOPARD if you're willing. Damn the stones count! Full speed ahead! I think I cannot truly consider my life's work complete until I do just that. You're .... you are gonna .... w - wr - write up the ...... the Femme Fatales?!?!? Ye GODS, man! Think of the consequences! There are some things that Man was not meant to do! I was thinking about starting a Secret Wars or some sort of "Dude, Who Stole My Cosmic Cube?" adventure when my schedule clears up next month. I was going to drag in heavy hitters like Thor and the Hulk, but hell, the Exemplars would make a much more interesting story! Especially if Osprey decided to go for broke and pull the same "Recruit me, I'm super!" trick on Galactus instead of the Wizard....

Stop them presses! I think I can build LEOPARD for 45 Stones! (It's become my target number for this team.) Gimme a few days. .... if Osprey decided to go for broke and pull the same "Recruit me, I'm super!" trick on Galactus instead of the Wizard.... You know that feeling you get when you lean way back in a chair and you ALMOST fall but then you just barely catch yourself? The idea of Osprey with the Power Cosmic gives me that feeling. Secret Wars with the Exemplars? Wow! I have an unnatural obsession for Secret Wars (take a look at my screen name!), and that IS about the time that Mach 1 (Quetzal) was "born" .... Hey, that'd give the Osprey a chance to mingle with Galactus! And save the day!! And have really cool Angel-type wings and a buff physique!!! Hoody-hoo!!!!
