Please forgive me if this is a stupid question as I have not played with or used the system very much, but what exactly is the Samurai action? Is it just similar to Ninja? The only time I saw it was on Lady Deathstrike in the Xmen companion book and no description or anything in the Actions portion of the book. Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome.
Samurai is, most likely, a flavored version of Close Combat to say that she is trained in samurai martial arts (Aikijujutsu, kenjutsu, battoujutsu, etc.)
Actually is a bad example of "buying" a specialty of a power instead of the power itself, like Longshot's Psychometry.

It appears to just be an extremely crappy close combat. She appears to have trimmed it down with the intent of only using her claws, however she still has her katana which makes both her GM and her player guilty of shameful neglect and bad character design.

Well, I don't know about it being a "crappy close combat", nor about what the intent was. To me it looks like Close Combat with a new name. Which makes both her GM and her player only guilty of trying to re-theme an existing Action.

They sliced out the weapon mod and gave her a katana she can't use except if she throws it at people. It's dumb.

That it is... besides, Samurai do use weapons, so why even name that action Samurai if they're taking away what it should actually do?... This is, like, one of the most ridiculous modifications I've seen so far...

Heh, somehow I missed that they didn't have the Weapon Modifier... That IS dumb. About as dumb as having a Katana with those claws...

Katanas DO have the "awesome" factor, more than claws IMO. But not when you can't use them. Then, carrying one around is dumb.

Eh, katanas are overdone, and hers is probably taller than her if the "5'" is referring to blade length alone. Note she also has nunchakus, and "Many Oriental Weapons," most of which she just has no idea how to use. Her Blaster +3 is nice though, with better range than a lot of rifles, if I were a ranged character I'd be looking to kill and loot her ASAP.

Katanas may be overdone, but I still love'em and forever will. Few things say "I'm gonna slice you into bits" as well as a good ole katana does. It's one of my favorite clichés. Oooookay, I'd settle for a chainsaw or a chainsword... or of course, a lightsaber. But hurray for katanas nonetheless.
