(Just some stuff I'm working on)
World History 101
A parallel universe to our own, and a parallel timeline. In the broad strokes, similar to what we know. But this is not our world. This is a world where the things our rational minds scoff at are sometimes very real. In this world, heroes and villains, many of them clearly super-human, have always existed. Still, for the most part, things were as we have known them. Maybe a little bit more exciting, at times.
The major differences (occasional flying man or rock-munching ogre aside) really began to take shape in what we might consider the "pulp" era of the pre-World War II world. Science was just beginning to understand the nature of super-humans, and technology was about to begin advancing more rapidly than ever. It was a time of flying aces and hard-bitten rogue archaeologists. The legendary Bronze Man (scientist David Truth) established the formula for the first "super team", collecting people with disparate specific abilities that aid him in his quests for knowledge (which frequently led him into conflict with less altruistic sorts).
World War II brought about the first real costumed heroes, but not on the battle fronts as many might expect. Oh, certainly, there were super-humans fighting for their countries, but the costumed vigilantes were springing up on homefronts all over the globe. Some speculate that this was in order to hide their identities and protect themselves from being drafted for the war efforts. Others say the costumes just looked great. Either way, the era of the "super hero" had begun.
In the Cold War Era of the 1960's, the Thelus returned. The Thelus were human-like alliens who claimed to have been the gods of ancient Babylon... or rather, they explained that when they found Earth, Babylon was the most advanced culture, and they chose to pass themselves off as the gods of that great culture. To the vast disappointment of alien conspiracy theorists the world over, they denied any involvement with pyramid building, or the deities of other cultures. They also said that in their millions of years of space travel, they had never encountered another sentient race.
