Batman set his mind to the task of breaking the Arkham security code...
OOC That's not a great roll :S However, 22 AV and EV is pretty badass. That's 11RAPs and reveals 11 characters of the 13 digit code: 47B5A031F89--. The remaining two digits can be from the following list: 1234567890ABCDE. You have a potential 3 attempts (you've just had one successful attempt) to crack the code before it locks down and you have to blow the doors off or look for some other way to get in. You can guess (each guess is one attempt) or roll Int/Will vs 13 OV/RV and hope for 2 more RAPs. I can't help but think many of the challenges in this module are designed to blow through the characters vast stores of Hero Points. Superman barely has any left and his backside was firmly handed to him by those goons in the scrapyard even after blowing mountains of hero points.

You wrote that there is an "F" in the code, but "F" is not a choice. Which is incorrect? Is "F" a choice or is there not an "F" in that code?
So far I think the characters I have left are 2, 6, C, D and E. (If I am understanding this puzzle right.)

OOC No idea if that's a typo in the adventure (I copied it from there) but the puzzle is rated at 13APs and yet includes that F in the code. So yeah, I think they screwed up. It's not a great 'mini game' at any rate and the typo smacks of lazy writing. For a code to include an F it would need to have a rating of 16. Come to think of it a rating of 14 is needed for a D and 15 for an E so yeah, it doesn't make sense. I'm thinking for pointing that out/spotting it I'll let you in the place anyway unless you really really want to bash your head against a brick wall figuring out the un-figurable (and yeah, that's not a word but neither is the door code a puzzle...)

Fortunately for Batman, the electronic security on this door smacks of lazy wiring. Preparing for the worst, the Dark Knight opens the door slowly and defensively, in case inmates are on the other side ready to rush him.
OOC: I don't have the book with me right now, but want to take a defensive action while opening the door to increase Batman's OV/RV.

BATMAN

Batman moves through the double doors which open obligingly after he keys in the correct code.
The hallways of Arkham Asylum glow with an unreal intensity; everything seems too bright, too detailed. And then, briefly, everything dims to slightly under-illuminated. Obviously, Arkham Asylum-is experiencing a power surge.
A preternatural silence fills the complex, which is normally a din of threats and insults hurled angrily at any authority figure. While your presence normally evokes a cacophony of vile dialogue formed of hatred and ridicule, this night the very breaths you take seem to pound within your ears.
Abruptly, a loudspeaker blares, "All inmates return to your cells! Guards have orders to shoot all uncontained criminals!" Then, with stunning suddenness, a voice yells out, "There's one of them! You have your orders!"just before a high-intensity laser blast scorches the prison-grey wall just behind and above your head. The sounds of approaching feet thunder through the Asylum halls.
OOC Someone is coming - fast. With Batman dodging chances are very little can actually hit him, but you may wish to take other action (hide, run, stand where you are and announce yourself to friend or foe for example) when whoever it is arrives in the entrance hallway...

Batman lays back and spreads his cape to appear more intimidating to the approaching group. He wants them to halt in their tracks, once he can get a good look at them, and more importantly, to hold their fire. "You want me? Here I am."Laying Back (+1CS OV) Multi-Attack (I don't know the # of characters, so I need you to figure this for me.) Batman spread his cape out to near fill the corridor and project his most menacing persona!
The men charge forward then gave pause at the sight of the near demonic sight that greeted them... More cautios now, they came forward steadily, stopping to level and aim guns, when they realize just who it is they are dealing with...
"Batman!" said one of the lead men, and it became clear with the light cast from a window that they were Arkham Asylum guards!
Their expressions changed from terror to relief as they holstered weapons and mopped damp brows. The lead guard came forward.
"Sorry about that, Batman. We've been gathering freed inmates and returning them to their cells ever since the escape attempt, so we didn't recognize you at first. We don't know who started this mess, but however it happened, it played havoc with both the security and electrical systems."
Just then the Warden, recently transferred from Chicago, makes his way through the guards and approaches Batman. The Dark Knight knew him to be a man named Underwood, and as far as Batman could tell, he was a fairly level headed fellow, despite the crisis going on around.
"I'm afraid you're a little too late, Batman. Inmate #0810 disappeared approximately two hours ago, although there seems to be no evidence of a breakout. Apparently the inmate tapped into the facility's electrical systems and disabled the security system enough to imprison everyone inside with no possible means of outside communication."
He leads the way through the Asylum with two guards as escort, leaving the others to continue the search for prisoner '#0810'. Batman notes that the warden is directing him to the maximum security detention area.
"I was speaking with Commissioner Gordon at the time of the escape, when the line went totally dead. Power was completely lost for approximately three minutes. Once power restored itself, I immediately conducted a complete round-up of all inmates and found only #0810 missing. The funny thing is, we couldn't find any evidence of misdeed."
The group arrives at the cell...
"Please examine whatever you can, Batman. We're completely stumped. All his belongings are here, and nothing seems amiss, but-" started the Warden...
"-no Joker," interjects one of the guards.
Batman glanced at the Warden. The fellow had clearly not had time to settle in yet and referred to the prisoners by their numbers rather than their 'street names'. He turned to the cell.
As Batman enters the Joker's cell, he feels a wave of nausea slide across his consciousness: a fierce pounding begins to hammer in his head. Yet just as quickly as the feeling came upon you, it recedes once again, leaving Batman standing upon the concrete floor of Arkham Asylum's most-notorious inmate. The Joker's cell is sparsely decorated with a twin-sized bed, a small table, a footlocker, a washbasin, and several pictures of Batman-definitely reflective of one of the world's most twisted criminal minds.

"Post a team by the entrance I came in through and don't let anyone out," Batman advises the Warden. "Joker may still be in here, somewhere. Have all guards report every 5 minutes. If anyone fails to respond...assume the worst."
Batman pulls out his Miniature Camera and starts taking snapshots of the ceiling, the walls, the door, the floor, the bed, the table, the footlocker, the washbasin and finally the pictures.
"Stand back," Batman commands, affixing his re-breather to his face. "If Joker had any access to chemicals he may have left us a surprise."
Batman now searches the area of the washbasin for any trace chemicals. After looking with his Sharp Eye, Batman dons his goggles and makes a sweep with his Infrared Flashlight.
Making a Detective 12 roll and a Scientist 12 roll for the washbasin investigation.
Detective 12:[dice=10][dice=10] Doubles! [dice=10] = 20!
Scientist 12:[dice=10][dice=10] = 16
Nice rolls! Hopefully there is something here.

Batman

Hero Points: 80OOC Before anything... [dice=10][dice=10] Close... but no cigar.Batman noted the Warden made no objection to the orders made to the men under his command. The guards glanced for a moment at the Warden, saw his slight nod and raced off to establish the perimeter and tight the security. The worlds greatest Detective - now or in any age - set to work, and was breathtakingly calm in his approach, taking photographs on a camera before affixing his re-breather and examining the washbasin. Despite his skills and equipment, or perhaps because of them, he was unable to find anything untoward about the washbasin. Moving on to the other areas ( OOC I assume - the only assumptions I will ever make as GM will not have an adverse effect on the player.) Batman took a look at the footlocker. OOC [dice=10][dice=10]Batman confirmed the footlocker at the base of the bed wasn't booby-trapped. There was a half filled jewellery box, an empty carton of Epsom Salts, several packs of matches and a manila file folder. Taking another look around ( OOC using your Detective Skill check - note you rolled a double but only added an additional D10 as opposed to 2D10. I think you're still in BASH! mode I used the next die roll, which was a 9 from your Scientist check. Total roll 16+13=29) Batman was able to ascertain: 1 RAP Infinitesimal remnants of shattered glass and salt are embedded in the base of the cell's far wall. 1/2 RV A thin but detectable burned trail leads from that site in the wall to the cell's only electrical socket. Full RV Along the base of the far wall are tiny globules of fused platinum, most likely caused by an electrochemical reaction between the platinum, salt and surrounding air molecules. Such a mixing would probably cause a small but powerful explosion. [rand=387400969164446950597439659759462019544327631592817508620209992]

OOC: Yup, I was in BASH! mode. Sorry.
Batman now knows the Joker blew his way out. It's time to let in the cops to help search for the mad man, though he hates doing this. His fear is that Joker will get to one or two of Gotham's finest before being caught or escaping.
"Let's get to the control center and let the police inside."
Rolling a Persuasion check:
[dice=10][dice=10]
OOC: Not very persuasive. Hopefully, he doesn't need to be.[rand=3117932036984712426533804042264852126855216920383114761628676206]

OOC Sorry for being rubbish with regards updating. My posting has been slowed right down this week thanks to work.

The Warden considered Batmans request then nodded.
"Of course, but you should know that our Security system will need some attention before the police arrive. I was hoping you could figure out what the problem is." he added, rather sheepishly.
Even as the Warden speaks to Batman the lights change from blazing bright white to a dim yellow for several heartbeats, before restoring to their previous illumination level.
The Warden glances about. "The power appears to have been cut momentarily. We have backup generators against such an occurrence however, so there should be no repeat of what went on here." he looks about, and runs a hand through thinning hair "Whatever that was." he adds, looking back at the Jokers cell. There was no sign of the madmans exit, but he was most assuredly gone.
OOC Batman has a number of options here...
1) Jokers locker contained a number of items he hasn't looked at yet
2) The security system needs looking at before the police can enter or Batman can leave (unless he wants to run the gauntlet of lasers again).

OOC: Fixing the security system is what Batman meant by "Let's get to the control center and let the police inside." So that is where Bruce is headed. Unexplored locker be damned. (Perhaps he can come back later.)

Batman accompanied the Warden and several guards through the halls to where the control room was.
The cramped room was somewhat low-tech given the nature of the people incarcerated in this place - the computers were several rungs down from cutting edge, the screens against the wall were 1st generation lcds and it smacked of needing a serious update.
As if anticipating some comment by the Batman, the warden spoke up "Our computers are... serviceable but we don't have the funding needed to update them. Much as I hate to admit it, incidents like this actually strengthen our cause when it comes to improving our chances of getting better funding. We don't want anyone to escape, of course, and we do the best we can with what we have, but..."
The Warden shrugged. "Anyway, the system needs resetting, and I was hoping you could do it - saves a call out charge and embarrassing headlines in the newspapers that crow about our being stuck in our own asylum."
The Batman sat in the chair and accessed the code for the security system. As an accomplished computer technician he could see the code was intact, but the system needed a hard reboot without opening all the doors of the cells. Not so easy.
OOC Thief skill check required. An ordinary person would find the task 'Herculean' but Batman merely finds it 'Challenging'. Hopefully that's clue enough as to how much effort you put in to reset the alarm system.
