OOC Have no idea what dice roll came up before the ProBoards reset, but your reaction (and that you are probably as honest as they come when it comes to gaming) suggests it was a good one.
Batmans skill and experience made the resetting of the Security System 'childs play'...
With the system reset Batman was free to come and go from this place for the time being. The Joker was at large, the means of his escape still unknown. There were ... Batman paused and glanced at the ceiling, watching as the lights flickered yet again.
There were 'brownouts' still occurring in the city it seemed. Worthy of investigation? What of the Jokers possessions - might there be a clue there?
The Joker was at large.
A chill ran down Batmans spine. How long before the first reports of bodies wearing stretched grins turned up...?

OOC: I think I rolled a 9 and an 8 for 17, which is why I was so pleased with my result.
"Sgt. Deckard and Gotham's S.W.A.T. team can now help sweep the asylum groups. I'm going to take another look at Joker's cell." Bruce is determined to get one step ahead of his nemesis. He'll never stop the maniac if Batman continues to react to Joker's set-ups. It's time to beat the clown prince to his own punch line.
OOC: Please roll Batman's Detective checks for me, since there is no online die roller at this time. I'll spend no Hero Points while searching for clues, but will want to spend points if I trigger a trap and need to avoid something deadly.
Thank you!

OOC Rolls from Invisible castle... 2d10 → [9,4] = (13) Perception check
Batman turns round, and the Warden raises an eyebrow. "Batman...? I thought you were finished?"
With a shrug he follows the Dark Knight, curious to know what the worlds greatest living detective might uncover from the Jokers cell.
Back in the cell the Dark Knight crouches near the footlocker at the end of Jokers bed. With a glance at the Warden and the guards that spoke volumes - it certainly prompted them to step out of the cell and to the side, but curiosity had heads poking round the corner a heartbeat later.
Examining the foot locker, Batman makes a decision then opens it - carefully. His keen intellect told him what he'd find, though the Jokers reputation suggested there might be squirting acid, deadly gas, an explosion, even harmless - but irritating - practical jokes. Twisted lunatic genius was like that.
The contents of the footlocker held unusual, but relatively harmless objects:
A half filled jewelry box, an empty carton of Epsom Salts, several packs of matches and a manila folder.
Batman turned to the Warden, who became a little braver and straightened up, stepping into view. "Outside packages are allowed for all inmates, though they are thoroughly examined for any dangerous content. There should be nothing untoward in there." The edge in his voice suggested that whilst he said the words, and mostly believed them, he was aware of the former cell occupants reputation and displayed a healthy respect for the mans ability to kill, by any means available.
He adds "You're welcome to check the arrivals log for inmate #0810" and in anticipation that Batman might want to do that, nodded to an officer.
A few minutes later a log is brought back, and the Warden settles his glasses on his nose before reading.
12 cartons of cigarettes 2 12-oz. Gotham State drinking glasses 1 roll of picture wire 2 pawn shop claim tickets 1 2-lb. carton of Epsom salts
Inside the Manila Folder Batman finds photocopies of two claim tickets, dated two days ago and inscribed with a logo reading: "Pawn King, 1060 W. Addison, the Bowery."
Batman glanced around the rest of the cell, taking in what others would miss.
OOC And then some. Detective check 2d10 → [10,10] = (20) DOUBLE plus 2d10 → [6,2] = (8)= 28 total. Full RAPs, needless to say.
Cell Check
1 RAP:
Infinitesimal remnants of shattered glass and salt are embedded in the base of the cell's far wall.
1/2 RV:
A thin but detectable burned trail leads from that site in the wall to the cell's only electrical socket.
Full RV:
Along the base of the far wall are tiny globules of fused platinum, most likely caused by an electrochemical reaction. Between the platinum, salt and surrounding air molecules. Such a mixing would probably cause a small but powerful explosion.
There's a bit to go at there. Batman may wish to ask a question or two of the Warden...

Batman looks for signs of where the nearest cameras and guard stations might be.
"Warden, when did you first learn of the explosion in prisoner #0810's cell?"

The Warden fished out a pocket watch. "You've been here, what, 5, 10 minutes? That'd make it a little over 2 hours agao Batman"
"With no sign of escape, the inmate appears to have simply vanished. We're stumped, and I've accounted for all the guards movement at the time - it's protocol, given the unfortunate past circumstances of escapes that have ocurred at this facility. As I said earlier, I was speaking to Commissioner Gordon on the phone when the line went dead, followed by the electricity in the Asylum for about 3 minutes. The Guards made a complete round up of inmates when the power was restored and we found the empty cell."
He shrugged, somewhat dejected. "We're at a dead end. Of course we'll cooperate fully with the authorities and I'll speak to Comissioner Gordon extensively about this."
Batman looked up and down the corridor. At the far ends were guard stations, but with this place so full of lunatics and killers, they'd have had their hands full. The cameras watched the corridor but Batman could tell they were of an old type and reflected very much the Asylum itself - ill suited for the deadly people the place housed.
OOC If Batman checks the cameras they show the corridors aside from the three minutes that Arkham was blacked out in. The screen goes blank in that time and reveals nothing about the nature of the Jokers escape.

The Caped Crusader leaves, ignoring the glances from the cops. If they expected miracles, they'd be dissappointed.
Some miracles take time to conjure up.
Outside of Arkham, Batman ignores the faint and fading hand marks on the Batmobile windows. Clearly some adventurous/curious/up for a dare cop wanted a look inside the tinted black windows. Batman wondered how they liked the low voltage electric shock. Not enough to hurt, but the smirks on a few cops faces contrasted with the rueful grin on one rookies features. The veterans knew, but the new guys had to learn the hard way not to mess with the Bat.
The Batmobile roared off...
=========
From every corner of every alley in this crime-ridden ghetto of the city, hidden, cursing eyes follow your movements. Children in tattered clothing dart into the skeletal buildings to escape your vengeance, leaving only the bright glint of stainless witchblades reflecting in their shadowed wakes.
Every single inhabitant of this decaying borough at once envies your strength and hates you for it. You claim to stand for good, yet you utilize the methods of evil with impunity and punish those who do the same.
Pulling up to your destination, you see the proprietor of the Pawn King standing nervously behind the store's wire·mesh cage, protectively separating owner from customer. The store itself reeks of a mingled stench of aged sweat and gun oil; obviously the proprietor maintains the highest caliber of clientele.
From behind a thin smile and a wad of chewing tobacco, the spindly shopkeeper cackles, "Heh. The Pawn King ain't got no need fer used cowls today, Batman. Hee hee hee." A thick strand of black saliva drips like molasses from the man's bulging mouth.
The man leaned back in his chair, chewing slightly faster and puts on a false air of Bravado. "Wanna trade in that old jalopy o yours? Give you a fair price. How's about ten bucks?" he cackles. "If there's any bullet holes in it I'll have ta revise my offer.... heh heh heh..."
OOC Apologies for the crappy posting rate. Every web site I frequent this week is getting only a fraction of my post rate because of 12 hour shifts and 12 between the next one. Even now (15.02 GMT) I'm eyeing the time and figuring I need to hit the sack. Night shifts. ugh.

OOC: A man's gotta work. Especially when he's a family man. Don't worry about it.Batman controls his outrage and smiles. "I'm glad you are in such a cheerful mood today. You're quite the joker, and lucky for me, that's exactly who I came here looking for."Rolling for Charisma/Interrogation 12, spending one Hero Point on AV and a second on EV... A 2 and a 6, so that's an 8 total for the 13-15 row. Her'e hoping the OV is 10 or less. Also, I'd like to use Batman's Detective 12 skill to see if the Pawn King does suffer from exposure to something akin to the Joker's laughing gas. rolling without spending any Hero Points on this one. A 7 and a 10. So 17 on the AV 11-12 row. That's good... if there is something worth spotting. Now her'es an image of Batman as a king (not a pawn) for a chess set. BATMAN

It takes only a few moments to 'rattle the cage' of the man inside the cage, and after that he's more than willing to talk...
"Ok, OK! No need ta.. ta get your ears in a twi... alright! Ok! Alright... lessee ... Just this week different people have come in and left lots of, well, technical-looking stuff - all in the same account. They paid me good-real good-but that's my business. I didn't know I was doing anything illegal." splutters the petrified pawnbroker.
"I was supposed to tell these guys to mail the claim ticket to inmate #0810 at Arkham Asylum. That's all I know, honest!"
He mops a damp brow, then glances about before adding;
"But if you want to get specific, they dropped off all kinds of goods: big bars of platinum can you believe? Electrical-like wire, sheets of glass and some other technical-looking stuff." He leans back slightly, and Batman knows he's being told the truth from the fevered look in his eyes. "Look, I run a business. It's just money, right? Take stuff in, hand over the dough, if they want it back they gotta pay extra, right? An' if they don't? Well I gotta get ridda th' stuff an' sometimes that ain't easy. I mean, look around..." he gestured to the clutter filled place. "I'm gonna be findin' buyers fer this stuff inna hundred years time, right?" he chuckles, but the laughter dies with a glance at the stony face in front of him. He coughs nervously.
Gathering some bravado back, Gus straightens up "Heh. You're too late anyhow. I mean, ta pick up th' stuff. Yeah, definitely too late for that one, boyo. He's done been here an hour or more ago. I'd have thought he'd run into you already, 'though, big scary guy that you are. He was as pale as me Aunt Hilda!"
Batman caught the last comment and knew Joker had been here, and was long gone. That said, he decided to look about the place anyway, his keen, practised eye spotting things others would dismiss.
Several small smudges around the base of the cage appear to be made from soil which matches the composition of that found in Arkham Asylum's open grounds area. Although the smudges have dried recently, it appears the dirt samples were recently mixed with fresh sea water.
Embedded in the wooden floor, at the base of the cage area, are several small splinters of wood whose fibres appear to have been regularly exposed to the same sea water. The wood sample is quite old and weather beaten.
As you gaze around this small, oppressive pawn shop, searching for the smallest of clues to fit this jagged puzzle, the shop's lights begin to dim, at first slowly, and then dramatically, to create an almost pitch blackness. A furtive glance outside the shop's filthy window confirms that the remainder of the Bowery and seemingly all of Gotham City has suffered from the black out as well.
Within moments, however, the lights begin their slow ascent to illumination, as the dingy surroundings of the Pawn King come once again into sordid view. Almost as noticeable as the total absence of Gus Rogers is the distinctive crash of a rapidly closing door emanating from the rear of the shop.

Batman knows where to find Gus if he needs him again. What he doesn't know is the cause of the blackout, even if he can guess who the cause is. Batman is going to rely on his Area Knowledge of Gotham City to recall where the main power for the Bowery is located. Roll: 2 + 10 = 12

On second thought, where the pawnbroker runs to, may be important, especially considering he headed off toward Crime Alley. Batman decides to take a bird's eye view, better to check out the alley and the area near Gotham Edison. He may also be able to tell the extent of the power outage from atop the tallest nearby building as well. Using Batarang w/rope to climb to a high point overlooking crime alley to try and spot The Pawn King and if possible glance in the direction of the power plant as well. 12 Int Perception Check with Sharp Eye Advantage to see what he can see from this vantage point. With a speed borne of pure adrenalin, Gus Rogers flees from your dark form at a fantastic rate, running with amazing alacrity deep into the Bowery's desolate heart.
Batmans goes for speed instead of direct pursuit, and the gas powered grapple gun launches a miniature dart that punches into stone. Wrapping around the belt buckle pulley the cord pulled tight, then launched Batman through the air towards the point where the dart had struck. In mid air he untied the cord and momentum carried him upwards for a few more metres before the gun fired off again.
Higher now, he stepped onto a ledge and sprinted along its length to look down towards Crime Alley... From here the buildings around were dark, forbidding and did their best to obscure the rest of the city, as did the steam and smog of the Gotham Streets.
As the distance between you closes, you can feel the waves of fear flowing from your prey; you smell hot perspiration as it beads upon his soiled clothing. He chances a furtive glance around behind him, and you see stark terror cross his face as the Bats silhouette momentarily imprints the floor... then he rounds a nearby corner and is once again, yet only momentarily, out of your grasp. As you race across a rooftop, certain to capture the fleeing Gus Rogers within moments, your legs freeze beneath you as you come to an uncontrollable, grinding halt. Your chest tightens inside you, your breath escaping in a soundless cry of anguish. Your vision blurs as, through ancient tears, you see a panic-stricken Gus Rogers fleeing into the depths of Crime Alley.
OOC 2d10 → [4,8] = (12) to overcome Traumatic Flashback...
Gus is getting away... Batman looks down at the alley. There. The exact spot. His mother... she... Batman swallowed, looking down at the scene. His Father, Dr Thomas Wayne... so kind, patient with his sensitive son and his endless questions, always making time for...
Footsteps.Gus is getting away...
OOC Where Crime alley is concerned, Batman is suffering Traumatic Flashbacks and needs 11+ to act in every phase. He doesn't have long before Gus is gone... I had to alter the description (above) because Bats is coming from on high rather than chasing on foot. As a result Gus is 4APs away from Batman on the roof. It's dark/shadowed, but Batman can still see his prey hotfooting through the alley...[/i]

This guy went from smirky to scared. Is Scarecrow involved? Even Batman feels fear overcome him. He fights it, so while gliding down toward Rogers like a predatory bat, he throws a razorwing to his the back of Gus's knee.
This will be a Planned Knockback Attack, though I'm just trying to knock the Pawn King down.
Roll: 1 + 5 = 6
Phooey, hopefully this is enough though. With Weaponry 10, I'm good as long as the OV isn't 5 or more. (Thank goodness I didn't try a trick shot.)

OOC Sorry about Delay - usual story of kids off school, playing Daddy Day care from 5am till 9pm then getting what house work I can done/catch up with TV, spend a little time with laptop and hit sack before it all starts again, groundhog day style. No respite tomorrow (Sunday 18th) even though it's my birthday. Just another day Won't last forever. Just another 2.5 weeks then things should ease up...
Batmans Traumatic Flashback check : 2d10 → [10,6] = (16) Passed
The attack roll hits - on the dot. 1RAP 'damage' which wouldn't be enough to knockback someone of Gus' size, but for the purpose of this exercise...The 'Razorwing' spins through the air with barely a sound, and Gus' cry as it strikes him at the back of his knee rings out in the darkness...He hits the ground hard, and turns, torn between grasping his leg, getting up and looking back in fear to where he knew the Batman would be coming from. Gasping with effort and fear, Gus rolls over, starts to sit up, and looks up... into the Batmans cold, grim visage... You rush madly through the streets of Crime Alley, trying to outrun the image of your parents being slain in front of your eight-year-old eyes, balancing on the edge of sanity as the timeless echoes of gunshots pound your ears. Yet yours is the mettle of a superhero, and with a resolve to make any parent proud, you conquer your fears and achieve your goal.
As your powerful, gloved hand clamps down fiercely on the sweater worn by your fleeing prey, Gus Rogers slowly looks up to face you, tears streaming down his terrified face.
"I swear ... I swear ... he took it all. The Joker came in and took it all. He'll kill me ... KILL me .... " Gus's eyes bulge with tension as rivers of perspiration pour down his forehead. "My part's all over now. If he didn't show up, I was supposed to take it to the docks, but he did, and I didn't, so ... please ... I'm just trying to make a buck .... Don't make me talk .... "
With a great shaking, Gus collapses into a fit of frightened tears; the man you hold three feet off the ground is no longer a smart-talking entrepreneur, but now a crying child.
