In the middle of character creation I hit this concept in the book and don't quite understand it. Specifically what effect, if any, does the background as described in the core book have on the number of Character Generation Stones?

I don't have my books with me, but if you just mean a character history, it plays no part in generation stones. One of the limiting factors, I think, of this game. If you want to play a seasoned veteran, you won't have the LoE to display this, so you'll end up with the same stats as a rookie. If anything, background creates reasoning for different challenges that characters will try to pull out at you out of nowhere. Background can be used to explain these.

Of course depending on your GM he migth want you to play a more experienced character so might give you more stones or lines. But it also depends on what you choose- if your character doesn't have a superpower just actions then you could be a veteran- you could buy high level close combat, ranged combat, vehicle ops etc. very cheaply really.

Sounds like we're not on the same page here. I'm referring to the list provided in the core book that goes from Mutant (1) to Interfered with by Ancient/Demonic Force (15). I understood the number to the side of the listed background (which is the term they use for how you got your powers) had something to do with how many Character Generation Stones you get. I could have been wrong though.

You get extra stones for challenges. You don't get extra stones for anything off that list (Mutant-Ancient/Demonic Force). That's just so that you have some idea of how your character got his/her powers. It may give you some plot hooks and ideas for challenges, but that's about it.

Nope that's just a list of the fifteen sources that ALL marvel characters have got their powers from in oine way or another.

Well, you can make stones out of them. If some magical force created the powers, you could reason that there's some burden he now has to carry. Maybe an opposing force that he has to take down or something. Mutant's always going to give you the challenge stones, though.
