Timeline
Early-2000's: Rumors first begin circulating Gotham of a vigilante attacking both sides of the mob war that has been tearing the city apart for decades.
2006: A self-proclaimed alien from a planet unknown to earth scientists calling himself Zod lands with an army of "Kryptonians" in the Atlantic Ocean. His initial overtures seem friendly, but it soon becomes clear that his true intent is to seat himself as the totalitarian dictator of planet Earth. He claims that this is necessary because others, far worse than himself, are coming.
Over the course of the next two years, a number of super-powered beings, previously thought to be merely wild tales, clash with the forces of Zod. Primary amongst these are the Prince of Atlantis (previously believed to be only myth) Arthur Curry (called Aquaman by the human press), Princess Diana (called "Wonder Woman") of the Amazonians (also believed to be myth), and the mystery man known only as "The Flash." Despite their immense power, these heroes are not able to stop the advance of Zod's agenda.
2009: The Green Lanterns Thaal Sinestro and Abin Sur arrive on Earth to asses the situation. Sinestro argues that if the Earthlings are not strong enough to repel Zod on their own, they cannot hope to repel stronger galactic threats. Abin Sur urges the Guardians of Oa to give Earth it's own Green Lantern. When they refuse, Abin Sur attempts to arrest Zod... intentionally getting himself killed so that his ring would seek out the nearest worthy ring-bearer, which he hopes will be an Earthling. The ring chooses Hal Jordan, who becomes the first Green Lantern from planet Earth.
The Batman emerges from the shadows of Gotham and unites the disparate heroes into a single team, which they dub the "Justice League." The League prepares to battle Zod and his forces.
2010: Zod launches an all-out simultaneous assault on several world capitols, hoping to crush the human resistance in a single fell swoop. The Justice League responds by making a stand at Washington DC. While they are initially successful in repelling Zod's forces, the tide turns against them when Zod himself takes the field; his power is simply too great. A new hero wearing Kryptonian clothing and a Kryptonian house-symbol on his chest emerges to fight alongside the battered Justice League. He is strong enough to go toe-to-toe with Zod, eventually besting the Kryptonian Warlord in single combat while other members of the Justice League sink Zod's ship in the Atlantic.
The new hero is dubbed "Superman" by Metropolis reporter Lois Lane, though he explains that his true name is "Kal-El", and he is indeed a Kryptonian himself. Superman joins the Justice League, but refuses to take leadership of the group when Batman offers it to him. Instead, Aquaman is unanimously elected.
2011 - 2012: New powered individuals appear in a slow but steady stream. The greater threat from the stars, of which Zod spoke, has yet to appear.
