The Lords of the X
The Story
First Earth
Long Ago, the Dark Master Dormammu gained access to the mortal realm. Waging a great war to ravish the world of Earth, even the combined might of all of First Earth's heroes could not prevail against his incredible might. Under the direction of the Sorcerer Supreme, the heroes of the past made a last ditch effort to seal away Dormmamu. By harnessing the very spirits of the heroes, and the very essences of their powers, they were able to cut Dormammu off from his dimension, from his main source of power. In a final surge, leaving much of the world destroyed, the remaining peoples of Old Earth were able to route the fiend. Turning back to his Dark Dimension, Dormammu found himself truly trapped, and sealed off from the mortal world. For a great deal of time, there was peace between the few scattered survivors, living on a desolate, ruined planet.
The Shi'ar Empire
The Shi'ar Empire took advantage of this, colonizing Earth, defending it form other starfaring races, and removing virtually all remnants of the previous civilizations. As the years, passed, the original Earthlings began to repopulate as the planet began to regrow. A Second Earth. These indigenous peoples were persecuted, and powerless against the superior technology of the Shi'ar. In time, many began to discover the might of magic. Lines of Mages began to spring up. Most were discovered independently, though there are stories of Mages who have visited from the lost city of Atlantis. Of the lines learned, some of the most devastating were the Skymages, masters of the elements, and the MagnaMages, masters of metal. These lines, their masters, even their acolytes were able to wreak havok on the Shi'ar outposts. Forced to rebuild their destroyed buildings out of the native Earthen materials to nullify the MagnaMages and travel by wormholes and massive Vibron-borne floating fortresses to avoid or withstand the devastation of the Skymages, the Shi'ar were able to defend and subjugate the increasing masses for many, many years. The FauanaMages, with their ability to create new life created footsoldiers for this great war, however, the most devastating was still to come, the Chronomages. These men and women had manipulated the fabric of time and space by way of magic, and though there was only one known to have mastered it, they were able to manipulate and destroy the Shi'ar's ship's engines in such a way to not only disable them, but to destroy the fabric needed for faster than light travel to Earth. Unable to bring in any reinforcements, the Shi'ar were eventually defeated in a war of attrition. The Mage Council that had formed agreed to leave these ruined buildings standing as a testament and warning to any who would visit at any point in the future. Over the following centuries, the old Masters died off, and many of the other mages destroyed each other in competition. There were still mages to be found, but the common nature of these mages, and the free exchange of magical knowledge was all but gone.
Second Earth
Second Earth was a completely different place now than it had been just a millenia ago. Human beings were far fewer in number than they had been in times past. Many of the Western Humans took the massive Shi'ar outpost and dubbed it Columbia, and set to the skies, building a city-state on it's cleared wreckage, and using the incredible vibron ore to create flying ships for trade and exploration. One bold leader from a long line of such to the other massive floating island and dubbed it Wakanda, and many followed him into the skies, where they have used their vibron ore for defense and scientific, creating the fabled Vibron Knights, as well as accessing the long dead Shi'ar gates. Still others of the Eastern Humans followed the great Doctor War to claim a land rumored to be called Latveria in First Earth. Humans were not the only race on Earth at that time. Though the Shi'ar had been systematically executed, there were a people called the Inhumans, much like humans, but taller, stronger, and much more long lived. These High Humans dwelt atop a great mountain, unapproachable, unscalable, and utterly isolated.
The Rise of Genosha, The Return of Dormammu
The FaunaMages had harnessed something called mutancy and created a race of people who were all uniquely monstrous. These mutants were specialized for different jobs. Some had adaptations for water, others for caves, some for flight, still others for combat, or spying or construction. Though the art of creating mutants became lost to time, there were so many that they began to multiply rapidly on their own. Their strange and unpredictable appearances and behavoirs led to them being treated as second class peoples in most societies, including that of Colombia, Wakanda, and especially Latveria. Sometimes servants, sometimes slaves, only in recent years has anyone taken a stand for mutants. The Maestro, a mutant, as well as a MagnaMage had successfully defended an island he dubbed Genosha, and offered open and free acceptance to all mutants as equals. It became a sort of mutant 'promised land,' oft spoken of, but few had the faith or courage to seek it out.
What the FaunaMages couldn't possibly know is that they had tapped into a force that had been used to wall off the Dark Dimension and the power of Dormammu. With this small weakness in the barrier, Dormammu was able to begin to exert influence over the mortal realm again. His presence was almost immediately felt, cults of DeathMages and Alchemists began to appear and grow. Doctor Doom, the ruler of Latveria has become a master of these new heinous abilities, and used them to slay the Wakandan King, inciting a war between the two kingdoms. Monsters, having lay dormant for many years since the Shi'ar occupation, begin to arise from the depths and caves with increasing frequency, some of which become a part of Dormammu's growing army. The Trask Family using ancient means called technology began constructing steampunk clockwork warriors called Sentinels. Even mutants became corrupted under the strange sway of the mutant called Exodes. Each, swearing allegiance to Dormammu, seeking to bring about a world under his rule. Now, only The Strange One, the current Sorcerer Supreme is aware of the danger, and must warn the rest of the world before it's too late. Colubmia seems secure in its non involvement, as they are protected by warriors bearing 3 of the Legendary Adamantine weapons: The Vibron Shield, The Skymage Hammer and the Armor of Fury's Spirit. One person not secure in it's non involvement is the Last Asgardian. The only Survivor of the Ragnarok that shook his home at the end of First Earth. Seeing the danger borne by Dormammu he has used what remains of his considerable power to imbue the people of Second Earth with great power, and the great responsibility of routing Dormammu's forces.
The Introduction
Here we meet our valiant players. Simple mutants, born into modest lifestyles, but suddenly clothed in immense power in the form of X-shaped sigils that appear on their bodies, giving them abilities far greater than that of any human. It is their job/goal to go about and collect the other sigils in the hope of resealing Dormmammu within his chamber forever. Unfortunately, their sigils make them targets, and can make them easy to track, and if they use their power at too great a level or for too often or too long, they run the risk of releasing him even more, and unless something changes, eventually he'd be free to turn this entire Realm into his own personal plaything. Fortunately, they have the guidance of The Strange One, and a great mission to seal away Dormammu once and for all.
Races
Humans
Humans are what they always have been, homo sapiens. While they are much more homogenized than they have been in times past, certain families still fall into the old sub races, most notably the Royal Family of Wakanda and many members of the Columbian military. They are still considered the baseline race, neither outstanding nor having any great setbacks. They are also the most common, and inhabit several kingdoms in masse, including Columbia, Wakanda, and Latveria as well. They can also be found in nomadic groups and small settlements and villages throughout the world.
Mutants
The second most populous species on Earth, and much more varied. Mutants range from 3' to 12' feet tall, from insanely hefty to unspeakably thin. With skin textures that may include skin - but never brown in tone - scales, fur, feathers chitin, semi-solids, exoskeletons of varied types, and combinations of al of the above. All of them were originally designed by FaunaMages to accomplish certain tasks, and thus are adapted to certain environments and goals, generally labor-related though there are some combat-aligned mutant lineages from the older times. Mutants, by virtue of their incredibly diverse lineages, never know quite how their offspring will turn out, though they do often inherit some superficial similarities to their parents as well. They appear nearly everywhere, as there is always work for mutants, and they are usually hunted and/or exploited if out on their own.
Inhumans
The "High Humans" are a much less populous species. They have shut themselves off from the rest of the world. Having interbred with Atlantians, many of the Inhumans have pointed ears of varying lengths, including the royal family. In addition, they are all taller, stronger and much longer lived than the average human. Their culture is one which prides itself on power, physical, intellectual, social and spiritual. Part of their seclusion from the rest of the world is out of pride, and part out of fear of being corrupted by interbreeding with lesser races.
Kingdoms
Columbia
Founded by humans after the fall of the Shi'ar Occupation, Columbia is on the site of a previous Shi'ar mobile command field. Borne up by Vibron Ore in the foundations of the floating island, Columbia moves freely through the air, so long as it's ore remains intact and sealed within the base of the island. It's wise men have mined some to undergird the floating airships which Colubmia uses for trade and exploration.
A democratic republic, defended by the AEGIS, 300 soldiers trained to protect the massive floating island from any and all threats. Headed up by Nicholas the Furious, this defensive force is peerless on it's own, however, the most incredible defense are it's three champions. The Captain, wielder of the Vibron Shield, Don'ald B'lake, possessor of the Skymage Hammer and Antonius of Stark, wearer of the Fury Spirit Armor. These legendary Adamantine weapons have been unearthed over the course of decades by diligent Columbian explorers.
Wakanda
Founded by the Black Panther, T'zera the Visionary, after the fall of the Shi'ar Occupation, on a smaller island one overgrown with foliage, the Wakandan Kingdom was founded. Their Vibron Ore has been used to make the Vibron Knights, soldiers without peer. Though only the bravest mightiest Wakandans bear this honor, armor and spear. The Wakandan wise men have also discovered how to make use of the long mysterious Shi'ar Gates, and can use them to travel throughout the world in the blink of an eye.
As a monarchy, Wakanda is ruled by its king, the Black Panther. Though the previous Black Panther has been killed in the Wakandan-Latverian War, a new king has recently been crowned. What kind of King he will be remains to be seen, but he has already been titled "T'Challa the Relentless." Though the population of Wakanda is far more diverse than the Wakanda of the first Earth, the pride of the people in their nation and their unerring loyalty to it is much the same.
Latveria
Founded by Doctor War after the Shi'ar occupation, in one of the few remaining vestiges of First Earth, the land of Latveria. As a master of War, he was enchanted with the legacy of Victor Von Doom, and he would often train others in its virtues, as though they were his own. Conferring the honorary title Doctor on anyone who had mastered any field as he had mastered War. These Doctors would often compete for leadership politically, though there were often coups and assassinations as well. In time, one arose who had mastered death and entropy itself. This mysterious masked man was called nothing other than Doctor Doom. Doctor Doom has ruled Latveria for years now, and no one has been able to challenge his rule successfully as many have for previous Doctors.
While not a floating city like Columbia and Wakanda, Latveria's Capitol City is an incredibly fertile and well protected land, hemmed in by mountains, canyons and a great sea that flows to the ocean. It's peoples are often humans who have been brought under Latveria's banner by it's expansion, as it has annexed, conquered, taxed and otherwise subjugated many of the nearby lands, including the Grand Plateaus, the Archipelago Confederacy, and the Northern Mountain Ranges. These varied lands not only provide Lateveria with resources, but subjects, which have contributed to it's dramatic investigation into technology, and creating a number of steam-powered technologies, including a train system that links its otherwise disparate tributaries together.
Attilan
Attilan's founding was in direct response to the Shi'ar Occupation when the original Attilan was destroyed, the remaining Inhumans decided to bunker down. Finding a mountain top, the Inhumans began to build defenses that would protect them from the Shi'ar. While these defenses , would at first prove of little help against the Shi'ar, who viewed the Inhumans as a major threat, many of the Inhumans' warriors and royals were killed, however, thanks to the work of the exiled Namor and the Inhuman mages who harnessed and stabilized the Terrigen Mists to improve the physical and mental prowess of all the Inhumans, they were not only able to defend themselves, but repopulate their numbers.
Atop Mount Attilan, the highest mountain on Earth after the Dormammu cataclysm, the Inhumans are protected not only by the sheer scale of the mountain and lack of paths, but by the wild storm that hangs perpetually in the area, further by the river of molten lava that flows around the base of the mountain. Even if someone were to traverse these things, in the main city, the air is tainted with a Terrigen Mist that is poisonous to non-Inhumans. Thus, they have existed for generation after generation, hidden, mysterious, deigning to descend only for the most grandiose of reasons, if only to keep the legend of their greatness vivid in the minds of the rest of the world.
Atlantis
The Last remaining Kingdom from First Earth. This submerged City is home to the Atlantians, who a blue/green-skinned aquatic race who, like the Inhumans, have sealed themselves off, even going so far as to exile Namor for continuing contact with the surface world during the Shi'ar Occupation. Their SkyMages, whom they call SeaMages have continued to shroud the place in mystery, and FaunaMages have created a horde of sea creatures that make the ocean and treacherous place to travel. It's libraries hold the entirety of knowledge from not only First and Second Earth, but worlds beyond the stars. This hidden kingdom intends to last well into the future, making their society strict and stringent to preserve these ends. The people are truly safe and well cared for, but they are not free, and as time passes this fact becomes more ad more prescient, more and more painful.
Shi'ar Ruins
The ruins of the headquarters of this occupation still stand today in the midst of the main continent. Here the Shi'ar planted their strongest base, and built a small society with civillians and agriculture and more, to make the colony functional. They created a network of minature wormholes to make transport and commerce around the planet even more enticing for potential colonists. When they were overrun and overwhelmed, some were able to escape back to the stars, and others able to hide for a time. All that remains are the walls and pavements and ramparts of their former Imperial Outpost. One can see the governmental parliament house, the collisseum for combat and entertainment, amphitheatres for art. Much can be learned about the decadent, preening overpopulated and relatively short lived species called the Shi'ar from these ruins, though few have the desire or knowledge to learn of them.
Deep in its recesses there are remains of the sub levels of the Shi'ar. One such recess holds the tomb of the Gladiator, the legendary warrior sworn to protect the Shi'ar Empire at all costs. Still further is the brig where untold menaces lay in frozen slumber, unable to be awoken by conventional means. Those who wish to explore the caves beneath the ruined city may find further surprises waiting for them there.
Realm of Asgard
A separate heavenly realm, existing into antiquity. In the Dormammu Cataclysm, Asgard's champion, Thor, not only contributed his own personal spirit to cut off Dormammu's power, but the essence of his power, that of Asgard. This conflict between fate and magic brought about Ragnarok, a war between the beings of Asgard for its fate. Odin prevailed and though Loki survived, by means of temporarily disavowing his Asgardian nature, Asgard was left a desolate wasteland that he, with only shadows of his previous power, was left to walk alone...
Dark Dimension
A separate hellish realm, the home of Dormammu, his Mindless Ones, and all the assorted energies and spirits that worship him. No mortal has ever set foot here and returned. Here, Dormammu is nearly all powerful.
