MAGNETO Phantom of the Bank Machine Magneto is in the vicinity of an Insti-Teller TM banking machine on 10th Avenue. A woman making a withdrawal suddenly collapses. Appearing out of nowhere, a figure in blue, red and yellow stands over her, pulling the money from the machine as fast as it spits it out. Magneto's Heath: 125 Magneto's Karma: 100

"I suppose you are not willing to make a charitable contribution with that ill-gotten wealth, hmm?" The Master of Magnetism begins, arms folded and witnessing the scene.

OOC: Normally, a hero can add Karma to a Popularity FEAT roll and the better the roll, the more people like him. However, criminals react differently than regular people. To get a good reaction from a criminal, a hero must get a white result (a low failing score) when he makes his Popularity FEAT roll. Heroes can't use Karma to lower their dice rolls to impress hoods. Due to his Popularity of Good (10), Magneto needs to roll a 45 or less.
Rolling d%: 54
The colorful thief ignores Magnus and continues looting money from the machine.

Magneto decides to encase this guy in a magnetic bubble so that he'll wise up. This can be accomplished by removing the force field from around Magneto and instead use it as an ensnaring attack to immobilize a target. This requires and Agility FEAT. Normally, Magneto with Remarkable Agility would only need a 36 or higher to succeed, however, the phantom of the bank machine is dodging. Dodging: At the start of the round a character can say he's dodging instead of attacking. Every time a hero or villain punches, grabs, hits shoots or throws something at him, the character makes an Agility FEAT roll and consults the Dodging column on the Battle Effects Table. The results would either be no change, 2 shifts (usually causing the attacker to roll 10 higher than normal), 4 shifts (usually 20 more than normal) or 6 shifts (usually 30 more than normal). So there is a possibility that Magneto may need to roll a 66 or better to hit, instead of just a 36 or better. I rolled an 18, so no change in Magneto's chances to hit this guy as he collects the remainder of the cash from the Insti-Teller TM. You need a 36, do you want to spend Karma on the roll? "Well, you are being quite the nuisance. Remain still!"
Magneto pushes himself to ensnare this man inside a magnetic prison.
I'll use 18 Karma to succeed.

Note: When spending Karma, you only need to spend at least 10, but you can specify a maximum amount you are willing to spend to speed up play.
Agility FEAT roll = 54
In this case you ended up not needing to spend Karma, so only the obligatory 10 Karma points are spent, not the full 18."Hey what gives?!?" the villain exclaims. "No matter. Do you really think you can hold The Speed Demon, old man!"Speed Demon then proceeds to move with super speed within the area of the force bubble. Magneto must concentrate on the barrier to maintain it. NOTE: Magneto really should be manipulating metal to serve as a barrier to ensnare foes. In this way, the victim will need to destroy whatever metal was used to bind them.
Typical (6) | - soft metals (gold, brass) | Good (10) | - aluminum, light machinery | Excellent (20) | - iron | Remarkable (30) | - steel | Incredible (40) | - vibranium | Amazing (50) | - steel alloys | Monstrous (75) | - heavy super-alloys | Unearthly (100) | - adamantium steel |
Since there is no metal involved, Magneto's hold on Speed Demon is Poor (04) at best.Magneto's Heath: 125 Magneto's Karma: 90

"Oh, you homo sapiens never cease to surprise me with your futile efforts." Magneto chided as he maintained hold of the Speed Demon. "Your brash attitude and similar penchant for speed remind me so much of my dear son. I doubt you're a match for him, however."
The mutant concentrates on keeping the imprisoned thief still. He even goes as far as rattling the force field like a snowglobe!

OOC: After doing some research on Magneto, I decided that he would certainly be capable of containing even Speed Demon's cyclone in a bubble of energy. However, I also found instances when Wolverine or others caught Magnus with his guard down and were able to hurt him. He had also taken a beating from Colossus in X-Men 113 while his force field was up. To explain why Magneto sometimes has an awesome force field, sometimes has a slightly less awesome force field and sometimes has no force field, I adjusted his power to the following.
FORCE FIELD. Magneto can generate a force field of Unearthly (100) rank if it contains only him; the force field becomes one rank weaker for each area it encloses. This field is different from most force fields because Magneto can use his energy attacks and magnetic manipulation powers through this field but force field and all other powers drop two column shifts in power rank. This force field is effective against physical, energy, and mental attacks.
So now if you want Unearthly (100) power over magnetism, have no force field. If you want and Unearthly (100) force field, don't attack. If you want to attack and defend, you can your magnetic control will be reduced to Amazing (50) and your force field will be reduced to Amazing (50) as well.
I reserve the right to adjust this if either of us find this breaks the game. Or if we find something that works better for us.
Like Magnus's son Pietro, the Speed Demon can create a whirlwind by moving in a circle. However, in Magnus's estimation, Quicksilver is twice the speedster. Failing to break free and losing balance due to Magneto's rattling, Speed Demon stops to talk with his captor.
"You're Magneto right? So what do you want? Half the cash? Or how about you just take the lady's purse and we call it even? Okay partner?"

"Partner? Oh no no no..." Magneto replied, looking as regally intimidating as ever. "You misunderstand; I am not here for your paltry money nor your offers of camaraderie. I would like to know if you were sent to do this...or are you dim enough to flaunt your artificial mutation around a true mutant, wasting your power on petty theft?"
He maintained his encompassing field active as the interrogation continued.

OOC: with Good (10) Popularity, Magneto needs to roll under a 45 and gets...an 08!
Speed Demon admits that he was just looking for a fast buck.
"Ooh..." the woman moans, regaining consciousness. "What hit me?"

"Hmm. And to think you could have been a challenge."
The ruler of Genosha then magnetizes Speed Demon to a pole (with the help of some loose metals to act as restraints), leaving the burglar to the mercy of the police. Better them than him, as he could have done worse.
"You were almost robbed of your money. Do care to look out for any thieves next time?" Magnus said to the woman, matter-of-fact in tone. "Do not thank me. You human peons do tend to be...pitiable at times."

There is a light pole down the block, past The Crimson Ram (Greek restaurant). OOC: The light pole is one area way. Magneto's force field is of Amazing rank at that distance, but since he is also going to use Magnetic Control to create restrains, the FEAT is of Remarkable rank. Magneto needs a 36. Rolling....66! Speed Demon levitates past two windows and the restaurant's front door, attracting stares from curious diners. The colorful robber delivers multiple blows to the force bubble, but fails to break through. The ball floats toward the light pole which is adjacent to a patio cafe with metal outdoor furniture that Magneto can manipulate with his mutant abilities. OOC: Magneto's Unearthly Magnetic Control suffers a two column shift (-2 CS) penalty, since he is using his force field at the same time. He now needs to roll a 26 or better to restrain Speed Demon, preventing the professional super-criminal from getting away. Rolling...29!"Hey, wait!" Speed Demon pleads as patio furniture warps to bind him to the light pole. "The woman can have her money back, and all the cash I have on me for damages. There's no need to get the fuzz involved! We can settle this out of court. Just let me down!"Magneto's Heath: 125 Magneto's Karma: 90

"Silence!" Magneto boomed. "Be grateful that I did not take more drastic measures. Let it be known that The Master of Magnetism is capable of merciful acts."
The white-haired mutant just hovers in place, waiting for the police to take Speed Demon away.

Congratulations Genetic Aberrant! You have just completed your first Marvel Super Heroes encounter, Phantom of the Bank Machine! KARMA: | | Thwarting the robbery | + 25 | Capturing Speed Demon | + 75 | Good role-playing | + 1 | Destruction of property | - 5 |
Magneto's Karma: 90 + 96 = 186murpg.proboards.com/thread/18424/magneto has been updated to reflect Magneto's new Karma total. Now we have to decide if we should go ahead and start the Secret Wars even though we only have Magneto, Hulk and Human Torch, or do we run one more mini-adventure for Magnus first. What's your preference, Genetic Aberrant?
