So, at Gen Con 2013 they had demos of the new Firefly RPG and a special preview quick start style book you could have got and well I got one and I played in a couple of the demos plus had a chance to have a decent conversation with Margaret Weis herself about the direction the mechanics have gone and a few other things. Plus, she also signed my book which I am stoked about. I understand that it is still being called the Cortex + system but it is a completely different beast from Marvel Heroic and in my own opinion improved 100%. It is now basically GMs dice (opposition roll) result according the the difficulty of the task vs. the players (raising the stakes roll) Attribute + Skill + Possibly Specialty/Distinction/Signature Asset/Big Damn Hero/Complications or vice versa (the gm and player take the two highest dice and add them together for their total, ignoring all 1's). Whoever wins their actions succeeds and it goes around and around. Of course their are plot points and other things, very story driven and I am very impressed with the direction it has taken. So, without further ado; The Return of Firefly RPG!As stated in the link, if you pre-order your books comes with a signed book plate.

I'll pass, thanks. Liked the old one, and even if I didn't I have several other good systems to run a Firefly game.

Looks nice and I like the system, but my friends are starting a Edge of the Empire campaign right now, and the overlap is too big. But will probably still pick it up after release, sounds good, just hope that it won't add to the "yet to be played" collection of games we have.

If you aim to misbehave, and be a big damn hero, then you'll probably give it a try sometime in the Black.

... maybe it's just the way you're describing it, but the system sounds horrendous. Cortex Plus was actually a nicely streamlined, effective system. If they'd just updated the old Firefly RPG from basic Cortex to Cortex +, I would have been much more interested.

I am drawing on memories from Gen Con and that was five days with a total of 7 hours sleep so ya. I have never played the Cortex + system, the Firefly RPG is listed as using the Cortex + system on their website. My only experience with anything related to cortex + was Marvel Heroic.

Corex + was actually the 2nd edition of the generic system that they put out. Marvel Heroic is a specific variant on it, but if you look at the various games that used "Cortex +" you'll notice that they're all somewhat different, in order to capture the feel of the source.

I never played the first Firefly game, so I'm a little confused: what exactly do you do in this game? Do you play the canon characters in original storylines? Or do you play original characters - and if so, are they basically also smugglers, or...?
Basically I don't get what makes this game "Firefly" and not just a generic space RPG.

I just have the review book and I have no idea what the real rule book is going to contain but in the review book there is a handful of adventures, a complete episode guide, stats and story for all of the main characters and many of the side characters (like badger, etc), all the information on the Firefly setting and verse, and plus rules to create whatever characters you want.
The original Firelfy RPG did not lean that heavily of the fluff side of the setting.

firefly online? awesome! also I guess everyone's already aware that the firefly comic - Serenity is going to be published by dark horse comics. I just found out about Firefly recently. Watched it, showed it to my dad, he loved it too! And he doesn't please easily! Serenity movie, great! A nice capstone for season 1. But so much story left untold! If only there was a Firefly 2. The main actors are still young enough to pull off a sequel if they pushed the setting back a few years after Serenity. But if Whedon waits until 10 years from now, there's no way you could pull off a series sequel with a geriatric cast. You'd need new actors to take on the roles and that would change the entire feel of it. But maybe a Firefly 2 would need fresh actors to make it work. But I think there's something to be said about the chemistry of the original cast and crew. So we get new comic, online game, and rpg based on firefly. just not a show. I wonder if the continued success of the comic/video game would prompt the release of Firefly 2 a couple years from now? I hope so!! That story really deserves to be told!

I'm pretty sure the show is dead, and I've come to terms with it. I love Nathan Fillion but he doesn't look up to the part anymore. And I doubt that the cast and crew could ever meet people's expectations.
The silver lining in Firefly's cancellation is that it never had a chance to get bad. Every minute of the show/movie is awesome, and that can't change now.
