Fairhaven was once nothing more than a minor trade hub in a vast kingdom. The Empire of Kaeolyn stretched over a third of the continent and was ruled by the mythical High Elves from it's legendary capital Daethorn, a vast forest of golden trees, each a mile high with their roots in the clouds... or so the sages say. Nobody now living remembers, at least not anyone that you've ever met. Now Fairhaven is the crumbling remnant of civilization in a sea of savage wilderness. Time has done to the once-impenetrable walls what generations of would-be attackers could not, and Fairhaven may not survive much longer against the tide of barbarism surrounding. Worse, Fairhaven may be the last bastion of civilization in the entire region; it has been over a decade since there has been any word from Reedsong, the city a few scant days' travel away.
This would be an excellent place for a rousing speech about a time for heroes to rise, but I have none. Heroes are for stories, and all we have now is grim reality. Now is a time for men and women who will do what is necessary for our city to survive another day...

So, yep... due to the vastly reduced amount of "counter-rolling" and the fact that combat maps aren't at all necessary, I think I'd like to try a D&D Next game here, using the setup above. If the flavor text doesn't make it clear enough; the characters would be young people living in a city that is falling apart and that, as far as the residents know, may be the last civilized outpost in the region (or really, anywhere as far as they could possibly know).
I'll flesh out more about the races, etc. if there seems to be enough interest.
