Millions of years ago, Shinnok, one of the Elder Gods, turned on his fellow deities and invaded the Earthrealm. Raiden and the Elder Gods stopped Shinnok, locked him up in the Netherrealm. Others followed in Shinnok's footsteps, like Outworld's emperor Shao Kahn, who was obsessed with conquering Earthrealm. So Raiden convinced the Elder Gods to enact the Tournament, as a way to even the odds, give Earthrealm a chance. For generations, Shao Kahn followed the Elder Gods' rules. The war moved to the arena, where he sent his toughest fighters to challenge Raiden's greatest defenders in...MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!!!
The rules of the tournament are simple:
- Every generation, competing realms will send their best fighters in to a single-elimination martial arts tournament; the victor of the tournament is crowned Mortal Kombat Grand Champion. If a realm can garner ten straight victories via their Grand Champion or another representative of theirs, they earn the right to invade the opposing realm. The Grand Champion him/herself is granted stunted aging and immortality until the next tournament. This is the ONLY way for a realm to merge another.
- The defending realm's fighters cannot be attacked by the opposing realm's fighters until the tournament begins.
- Mortal Kombat, once declared, cannot be refused by either party.
- Special powers can be used in the tournament.
- Any violation of the above rules is considered an act of treason against the realms and the Elder Gods themselves, and will be dealt with accordingly and swiftly.
TIMELINE (BMK meaning "before Mortal Kombat"...or before the first present-day tournament)
1000+ BMK-500 BMK: The first known Mortal Kombat tournament, created when sorcerer Shang Tsung, under orders by Outworld emperor Shao Kahn, took control of an Earthrealm Shaolin tournament in a bid to upset the Furies (the entities responsible for maintaining the dimensional barriers) and invade Earth. In this time span, Shang Tsung (as a Grand Champion too) held a 9-tournament winning streak, but was cut short in the tenth tournament by the Great Kung Lao.
500 BMK-0 MK: The Great Kung Lao held his position as Grand Champion for only one generation, after which his title - and his life - was taken by Shang Tsung's newest warrior, Goro, who held the title for another nine victories.
PREMISE
You are one of the chosen warriors, fighting for not just your own reasons, personal or otherwise...you are struggling to define the fate of the realms as a whole. Throughout your journey to victory, you will discover the insidious secrets behind the tournament and that the struggle is a lot bigger than just claiming glory in kombat.
SETTING
In this universe, a realm is the name given to a dimension occupied by a single world. The realms were created by the Elder Gods (the supreme deities of the universe, who split the One Being (the creator of the universe) through the use of their Kamidogu (mystic relics of unbelievable power). There were many in existence, before the power-hungry campaigns of the Outworld leadership forcibly fused a grand majority of them through Mortal Kombat. The ones left standing are Earthrealm, Outworld, Edenia, Seido (Orderrealm), Chaosrealm, the Netherrealm (or as some refer to it: Hell), Heaven, and Rellim Ohcanep.
MISCELLANEA
In order to have an advantage, most of the fighters ally themselves with other like-minded beings in order to compose groups called factions. Joining one will give you special benefits in the form of training, equipment, information, and other resources to use at your disposal provided that you are in good standing with said faction. Although you may leave, abandon, or switch your faction...it is not always advisable. With enough renown your permanent loyalty bonuses can be, yet are not limited to:
