I liked DC Heroes, but couldn't get any of my players to embrace it

How can we talk about the worst games ever without mentioning FATAL?:-) The most fun superhero experience I've had via tabletop is with Simon Washbourne's systems, SUPERS! And Triumphant. ICONS looks neat, but it also looks dangerously breakable. Could be wrong. Never got a group in on it (speaking of breakable--SUPERS really does require a dice cap, or forget it). Of course my own preferences are on rules light and speed. BFRPG is the go to Fantasy system, but...I am definitely gonna get a Barbarians of Lemuria game goin sometime (anyone wanna do one here?) ? But I digress... When I ran MURPG, I have to admit it I didn't always have a set stone resistance count. For awhile, I tracked that stuff in a separate file, listing all sorts of shit. Then I just gave up and tried to facilitate what the players gave me. Much prefer a more random task resolution, just for the surprises.

FATAL is just offensive garbage remembered only by the likes of us on the internet. It sank without trace years ago and I know of no one who has actually played it. Supers seemed too simplistic but probably isn't that different from games like Marvel Heroic - grab some dice and compare against someone elses. Icons is a game that has been around a while but have never played it (despite owning 1st ed and kickstarting the revised edition a couple of years ago.) BFRPG falls in the stable of OSR clones or semi clones I think. Labyrinth Lord, Dark Dungeons etc. May as well play red box basic imho BoL is a game I have GMd before online. As far as I know that game was the only one that ran to a conclusion on the old 'semi official' BoL forum (before that was overrun by kitchen spammers). The players woke up in the hold of a ship, naked and in chains, before a shipwreck landed them on the jungle island home of a necromancer who wanted to create an army of the dead. The last remaining player (from a starting roster of half a dozen) saw his character escape as a volcano consumed the island, with a pile of treasure and also got the girl (a winged warrior woman who swooped down to rescue him from the thirty foot sharks that were eyeing him up). Fun for one shots, but no idea how it stands up to long term play.

How can we talk about the worst games ever without mentioning FATAL?:-) ... because the only time I've ever even heard it referenced is when people are talking about worst gaming systems. I don't know anyone that ever actually played it, to my knowledge. It sort of exists, for me, in that abstract space where things are just wikipedia entries. Out of sight, out of mind.

Why are people ignoring the smiiiiiiiley face? (Never actually thought FATAL was being actually considered)
Not sure how MURPG is unplayable, because people still seem to be playing it here. :-). But certainly there are better systems to emulate specific types of supers genre. Lots of fans still for MSHRPG. Never ran it. The weird categories and charts turn me off.
Rox: why not LL and B/X? Good question. I think players don't grok race as class here. I'd rather play that, and might, at some point in the future. For the moment BFRPG gives us what we need. A whole bunch a free that emulates the OS experience.

Why are people ignoring the smiiiiiiiley face? (Never actually thought FATAL was being actually considered) Because I am German. I am efficient and have no humor. ... but almost universally heavily house ruled so as to be nearly unrecognizable as the original, intended product...

I dunno, WK, it still looks a lot like MURPG. You still use stones. You still build with stones. You have to BE stoned to fully enjoy it...:-)
(Dude: bet I'm just as German as you--let me run down the names on mom and dad's side of the family--Eichmann, Kuenstler, Schumake...and the outlier Mcain!)

I'm only about half German, so its not actually all that hard to be as German as I am... but despite the lack of hardcore German genes, I come from a very German family. My Grandfather spoke German better than English despite being a second or third generation American, I grew up hearing German jokes, and I'm constantly told that the men in my family are very German (whatever that means). I suppose how much of the system is still MURPG depends entirely on what you consider to be the core elements of MURPG. IMO, the heart of the system, the intent of the creators, is not reflected in the way most people play the game on this board.

Smiley face! Smiley face, damnit! ... emoticons are for losers. Or something else that explains my not paying attention to them.
