Our world was one without superheroes, aside, of course, from films and comic books- those there are plenty of- but real heroes? No they didn’t exist, at least not in the super sense. There were heroes, sure, the sort of heroes that you don’t ever hear about on the news, the sort who are forgotten within moments despite the fact that they saved lives every day- firemen, cops, nurses and doctors; our soldiers and sailors, all of them ignored by everyone.
That all changed one night a few months ago, something happened which changed the world forever. Scientists, philosophers, spiritualists and more have all tried to explain what happened and none of them can. None can explain why superheroes suddenly appeared, why some were gifted and others weren’t; nor why the gifts were different in manifestation and sheer power. Some were given gifts that were so minor as to be almost pedestrian, others could almost shape worlds with their wills. Some have tried to categorise them, giving them letters, numbers or even designations using Greek letters but all of them pale in comparison to the sheer variety that is emerging.
The event brought many out to see it, to watch the unexplained lights in the sky. Shimmering colours like little streaking motes of aurora. Nobody was able to explain where they came from, they weren’t meteors, nor was it usual EM radiation or a stream of satellites. Even months after, analysing data collected across the world, nobody can explain where they came from nor why they had their effects on random members of the population.
Some felt the effects immediately, others didn’t know it for days or even weeks and still they are emerging. Some can fly, others can manipulate the world with their minds, some have strength, others invulnerability and others yet seem to have been blessed only with perfect vision or the ability to project their voices- not all were equally gifted. Stranger still, the factors influencing the world seemed to have changed- ideas that had once seemed outlandish or unlikely suddenly became possible, intelligent computers, suits of walking metal, even manipulation of molecules with hand-held devices, something sparked in inventors across the world and their theories suddenly became facts and changed the world in so many ways.
Of course, not everyone uses their new abilities for good, in fact a large number have begun to use them for selfish ends- stealing, trying to carve out their own kingdoms and schemes driven even further into madness by their newfound abilities. Now is the time for superheroes, to combat the supervillains. Now is the time for them to rise!
The premise is simple- the heroes and villains from our favourite Marvel comics didn’t exist, that is until recently. Something changed late in 2015, changing the course of history. Suddenly they begin to emerge, not perhaps in the forms that we are used to, but still recognisable in some way.
Character creation can be at any of these levels (or multiple ones if people would like- challenges can be tailored to levels):
- Street-level: 30 creation stones and up to 5 in challenges
- Fame-level: 40 creation stones and up to 7 in challenges
- International hero-level 60 creation stones and up to 10 in challenges
- Deity-level: 85 creation stones and up to 15 in challenges
In addition, the following rules change applies:
Abilities
The major change for these rules is that, as an ability, you no longer buy Durability. Instead, you buy Health, Energy and Regeneration and the average of these three Ability Numbers is your Durability Number. You have your Health Number in White health stones; three times your Energy Number in red energy stones and regain your Regeneration Number in Red Stones each page. This allows for frail characters with lots of energy even though they may not be genii.
In addition, the Special Intelligence Energy rule is now redundant except that your character’s maximum energy pool is reduced by 3 per lost White Health stone as in the Special Intelligence Energy rule.
