It's funny, I don't actually consider the First Class/Days of Future Past X-Men to be at all in the same universe as the original X-Men trilogy and associated movies. Aside from casting, there are like 3 details that match between those movies, and hundreds that are completely contradictory. It's just easier to explain away the similarities than the contradictions.
When you watch First Class it's amazingly clear that, originally, they just wanted to make what would have essentially been "X-Men Origins: Xavier vs Magneto". But at the last second they flinched, I guess afraid that nobody would go see (or buy toys from) a movie about two European guys playing chess in the 60s'. So they crammed some X-Men kids in there (just not Cyclops and Jean and Storm, because that would make them like 60 years old.)
But that was about the extent of the work they did to make the two timelines make sense.

True. I guess we'll just chalk all the bad writing up to being just that, and saying the movies happen in parallel realities.
