The year is 1963, and Reed Richards has just beaten the Soviet Union to the moon. Not only that, he has begun pioneering new technologies, techniques, and equipment that are unlike anything the world has truly seen, earning his nickname “Mister Fantastic.” Alongside Richards, research done by the likes as Dr.’s Henry Pym and Bruce Banner (not to mention the engineering work of Tony Stark) are breaking bold ground in a fledgling field of cutting edge work that many laymen dub “superscience,” though they are far from alone mapping out the Microverse, the Negative Zone, and other sundry dimensions or discoveries from the many alien species making first contact. There are dangers on each of these new bold frontiers, whether it’s in the far reaches of outer space, to hidden in our own backyards and plenty of others with dark ambitions for this new technology, discoveries that have found themselves in the wrong hands, scientific abnormalities. This necessitated the founding of the Vanguard.
The Vanguard is an assemblage of like-minded scientific adventurers, each with their own specializations and skills, who pool their skills and powers together towards the betterment of mankind. They will travel in time, the far reaches of space, the depths of the microverse and beyond to protect our world from the specter of Communism, the Skrull Empire, and even more insidious invasions at home. With their varied powers and expertise, the Vanguard works to defend the Earth, and Democracy, wherever they may be, and to understand the deepest inner workings of the Multiverse.
Character Creation Requirements
1. 45 stones+max 10 in challenges
2. Must have at least 1 of the following actions at AN 3, and 1 more at AN 1: General Knowledge, Technology, Inventing, Genetic Engineering, Medical Healing, Psychiatry, or an approved custom action that is like one of these. Computers aren’t as widespread in this era and would be considered a highly esoteric specialization (but a valid choice nonetheless). There is, however, no Intelligence minimum (besides 1, I suppose); higher Intelligence characters merely benefit more from these actions.
3. No power limits or restricted actions/powers; mutants are discouraged but not prohibited given the right backstory. Remember this is set in the 60’s, so characters may find themselves discriminated against based on their backgrounds, mutant or otherwise.
4. The backstory is especially important to me for determining submissions. I’m looking for heroic characters with some kind of “super-scientific” background, although what the exact nature of that super-science is, I leave to you. I’m also looking to harken to the tone of Silver Age comics: optimistic, outlandish, and often over-the-top. My only real restriction is this regard is characters who would have unambiguous pro-American ties. I would recommend trying to balance any silliness or comedic nature of your characters with seriousness. Ideally I’d like characters to have a little bit of both, but strongly prefer serious characters over comedic ones.
5. I’m also hoping to move this game at a pace of once a week. If you can’t guarantee being able to at least match that most weeks, I wouldn’t recommend applying.
No deadline for applications at the moment. Holidays tend to be a dead time anyway. I’ll see how many applications I get, and after I meet a threshold I’ll set a deadline for final submissions. This likely will take more than a week, I assume. I’m not sure how many spots to set for this game, I’d like to cap it to 5 (if I get 6 good submissions though, I may force a sixth spot). Players from my defunct Guardians and Fantastic Four games will get preferential slots (and if you feel your characters from one of those games may be worth adapting to this setting, go ahead, but new ideas are always appreciated too). Feel free to PM me with questions, comments, builds, etc.
