Ok all. I’m here to pitch to you an original character Star Trek game based on the MURPG system. Now, for some behind the scenes info: - I don’t know too much about the franchise, other than the fact that I LOVE the three latest (“Reset”) movies released the last couple years. This means that my knowledge ToS, TNG and so forth is fairly limited; meaning that I will be using the wiki a lot. - Because I like the latest movies a lot, I am going for a game where the pacing and feel (hopefully) will be similar to them. - Please correct me where I may be wrong and understand that I am fairly new to the franchise. Here is some information as it relates to the game: - I am currently looking for all crew positions. The categories of positions are as follows: ----- Enlisted Crewperson (15+5 CADs) [An enlisted crewperson is one who has not completed the four-year Starfleet Academy course. Enlisted crewmen receive basic training, along with any specific courses required for their position at the Starfleet Technical Services Academy on Mars, before being posted.] ----- Commissioned Officer (25+5 CADs) [In the Federation Starfleet, an officer or commissioned officer was an individual who had attended and graduated from the four-year cadet program of Starfleet Academy. Upon graduation from the Academy, the cadet was granted a commission appointing him or her to the rank of Ensign, or in exceptional circumstances Lieutenant junior grade.] - I want the players to come up with and agree on the name of our ship.

Love the concept, definitely interested in hearing more. If you are new to the franchise can I assume you will be basing the game in the TOS/ rebooted universe era?

If by ToS Reboot universe era you mean the alternate reality universe (where the newest set of films come from), then yes... kinda. I'm going for the feel of the latest movies and want to build my game around a similar universe. Whether or not that universe is the movie-verse remains to be seen. But yes. Overall I'm trying to build my game up in and or around the movies or to cover the general "Feel" of them.

I tried a Star Trek game once, seemed to suffer from chain of command issues. The players weren't free to act on their own accord which rather dampened the game play. What sort of story did you have in mind?

What sort of story did you have in mind? Hmmmm... think I'll keep that in mind and try to structure the game around that some. Maybe make to CoC ranking known to players and ask them to respect it? Game-wise I was thinking of doing something similar to the new second and third movie, where an old threat rises up seemingly out of nowhere. I was thinking of doing this for the fist story-arc or two; after a brief into mission or two for the PCs to get together and understand each other some.

It was less players having to respect chain of command (which isn't a problem) and more that the CoC existed which meant players had to check what they were doing with superiors which left very little room for freedom of action. In most RPGs players can do what they want. CoC stifles that a bit, I found it made the game less good. However that could just be my experience.

Im game since your doing a new ship im not too worried about any historical issues your in your own world basically since the movies haven't really been too expansive. Just so you know im sure im not the only one but seen probably 90% of the old star treks (I watched them with my family) im not an expert but im no noob. also might I suggest all players be officers? none of the main characters are really enlisted because of exactly what Janus explained. if everyones an officer it gives more leeway in decision making.and you can still have lower and higher officers if you really needed.

Ok. Sounds good guys. I was thinking of a modifier that people could buy that'd "Settle" this.

I would like to be Klingon but I'm sure your doing a more Starfleet approach. Also Miles O'Brian was an enlisted crewman in both TNG and DS9. As for CoC problems with players and their superiors, in other STRPGs I've played, it was always more of "This is the mission go do it." Most players then went to go do it. The party leader would have rank and kept everyone focused. Players did pretty much what they wanted to get the mission completed and CoC during the game was more of the party leader telling the ship what was happening in progress reports.

Consider this. The new TOS reboot the crew is more of 'frontier' authority driven. In TNG nearly all choices had to be run through a superior officer, but in the reboot their is freedom to 'cowboy' it, meaning if you get the job done and the results are mostly positive, then they move on to the next problem rather then 'why didn't you check with me first' attitude of a more strict chain of command structure. The again if things went south and you screwed up stuff ... there was more hell to pay

Also... Are you doing regular Durability or the three stat energy split? Didn't think of that. Probably best to split it.
