“Well I can get us there ahead of the ambulance if you like?” He did overhear the shock over the phone and he filed that down for later. Right now they apparently needed to round up these civilians to Men In Black them. Another mystery to put off later. “Unfortunately if we take my way we may have more explaining to do.” Jon wasn’t a bad detective, but ever since he got back he’s had a hard time connecting to people.

"You always have a choice, you could lock the room up and forget this ever... Oh my gods..."
Cerberus conjures a detailed image of the markings on the door and this immediately has Captain Dyres attention. She studies it with an expression of awe and wonder clear on her face.
"That is just... Beautiful. " She says trailing off.
She studies it for a number of minutes whilst Lt. McPhierson, Jon and Mildred round up people. Between the ambulance crew and cops who were around there is a small nervous looking queue of people waiting in the kitchen away from the library. A group of what looks like a cross between SWAT and some science fiction military unit cordon off the area around the library. Between the strange looking weapons and futuristic body armor they make for a very imposing presence.
After about ten minutes there is a shout from one of them as a drone is spotted. It lands on the front lawn and drops a small box which is picked up and brought inside. Those outside at the time (Jon and Mildred) would notice Wayne Industries markings on the drone.
The arrival of the box breaks Captain Dyres from her concentration at which point she turns to Christopher with a smile on her face.
"I don't often express an appreciation for magic, but this is a beautiful spell. I hope I get the chance to meet with your grandmother, because she has a rare gift. Either way if you will allow me to guide you I think it's possible to exclude certain people from the spells effect. In fact the spell appears to have been designed with exactly that possibility in mind. It also appears there is a message left within the spell for if someone does use that facility, however i don't suggest we all take advantage of that. If your grandmother is as clever as I think she is she will have built in security. You will almost certainly be safe, anyone else I can make no guarantees."
She turns and picks up the box that has been delivered and addressing the officer who delivered it as well as everyone else in the room.
"Sergeant, Mr Abthorpe, Michelle if you will all join me please. We'll let the detectives discuss who should have access. I'll be back in a few minutes."

"Your mess, your call partner" Mildred said with a smile, deferring to Christopher. "I'm not one to overstep boundaries while being a house guest. Not anymore" she added as an afterthought, no longer a denizen of the night. It wasn't like she was getting the hot potato out of her hands, she just was showing respect and Mildred didn't really feel like that was a choice she should make. For a moment she considered the opposite, making her the call and removing the weight of responsibility from her partner's shoulders, but she felt inadequate to do so. In the few days they had know each other Mildred had already seen that the young capable man liked to be in control of stuff, maybe too much even, but he was indeed too young to fully understand that the kind of control he wanted to exert was a fool's errand. One had to learn to deal with what one couldn't control, a lesson learned in pain that Mildred couldn't nor wanted to teach him.

Christopher raises an eyebrow at Dyre before looking at the spell himself and learning everything he himself can about the function of such a spell as well as how it would be executed. After a few moments of dissecting it into it's individual parts he looks up at his captain.
I think you are probably correct about the message part of the spell grandmother was always a fan of having redundant security. Though if you would be so kind as to show me what you understand of this then I would appreciate it. Though I would like to ask again exactly what are you?

Cerberus
The young detective had found this spell also very alluring. There was something beautiful in this spell and he knew the captain was right in this. This spell had been produce by someone very talented, even he could tell. Once he was done with it, the spell wore off and he put his hands in his pockets. Was there anything else he could assist with? He certainly would have like to get news from his partner, but he knew he couldn’t join her at the moment. Hopefully, she was out of her predicament.
He turned to Captain Dyre.
-Anything else I can help you with captain?-
He asked with a smile. There was something hypnotic about it, but of course, this was a normal occurrence about random people. These people were a bit more special.

Captain Dyres returns after a few minutes and takes a moment to consider before answering Christopher's question.
"OK, fine, you get the very short version. However I'm afraid there isn't a simple answer for what I am. Put as simply as I can, I'm immortal, in so far as I haven't died yet or aged in a very long time. In my very long life I have known hundreds of sorcerers, wizards, warlocks, shamans, and the like. I even practiced long ago, until an 'incident' stripped me of my ability to cast."
"Now I do what I can to make the world a better place. However, rather than solving people's problems for them as per Superman or Batman or any of the miriad of heroes I have seen over the years, I learned long ago that it is better to show people how to solve their own problems. Set up organisations, teach people. Hence my being here."
"Now any further questions will have to wait, if you want that artifact translated I will need to see it."
"This," She says handing Christopher a scroll. "Is the best protection I have. Assuming your Greek is up to the challenge the scroll itself is self explanatory. Sign in your own blood and the item will be safer than any item in this or any other world."
"As to the spell you see in the centre of the circle the rune of arabus?"
Both Christopher and Cerberus did, it is one of the more well know of magic runes implying organisation and harmony.
The spell itself combines numerous rune sets and magic symbols from different branches of magic. You could both spend weeks researching it. You can see it has mesmerism, illusion, and summoning aspects to it. Cerberus can see that the illusion aspect is one that hides both the door way and the area beyond the door from both observation and scrying. Christopher can see that the spell is extremely well organised, acting not just as a spell but as a system of spells. Spells cooperating together to achieve a single purpose. It is extremely impressive.
"You see how it is linked to the tiny circle in the centre left with what looks like scratch marks. They are actually a very old and quite powerful rune set rarely used because very few people know about them. Each rune can be used in different ways depending on the runes they are connected to and the casters intent. One is called Hirmok, the rune of dominion, one Lann, the rune of Bargins and the third one Orphis, the rune of revelation. From the context, Bargins implies a waiting arrangement linked to a revelation concerning dominion over the entire spell."
Captain Dyre clearly knows her theory and her story makes sense but pause as she said 'incident' gave you all the impression of an uncomfortable memory.
"What you need to do is push there with a small amount of magic energy. It will activate that part of the spell. It looks like its mainly mesmerism, so you will probably get the message directly into your head."
"Whilst you are doing that, Jon, I just got a call from Arkham. Detective Rodriguez has just woken up. I need you to go over and transport her back to the station. Oh and in case it wasn't clear. Talking about what is happening here is going to get people killed. So don't, to anyone."
And with that Jon vanishes.
"Cerberus, I think having the three of you working together will be best. I am going to check on Jade once she gets back to the station. If you can photograph the things you need me to translate and send them to me I will work on that. I'm concerned with what Jade has gone through so I want to make sure she is fit for duty before I partner you back up."

Mildred was weirded out by how forthcoming Dyre was for a moment, but also amused by how little had she revealed. What could be seen as a sharing moment in a heated time turned out to feel more calculated than she initially thought, at least for the paranoid vampire. Yeah, maybe Mildred herself couldn't say -without lying- that she was able to cast spells once, and she wasn't as old as Dyre claimed to be and probably was, but she could as well give the immortal speech to anyone who asked. In fact she once had, foolishly trying to impress a particularly attractive mortal that got too close, Mildred making herself sound older and wiser than she was at the moment.
Beyond the reveal it seemed that the problem, as baroque and arcane as it could be, it rested on good hands and the two very different spellcasters from the team should be able to handle it. Mildred frowned, as she would have to play team mom and take care of the wizardy types if things went wrong. Not only that made her feel older, as appropriate as it was that didn't mean she liked it, but also it was taking her a bit to accustom to the whole team player thing, even if that day she had already bled for someone that wasn't her.
"Ready whenever you are, do your thing, gentlemen" Mildred said, shielding her thoughts with a pointy smile.

Christopher's goofy smile is back, he has always used it to hide his real emotions and why should now be any different. A thousand questions race through his mind wondering what else the Captain could be hiding, her "incident" obviously did not extend to her alchemical abilities a school of magic he was very much interested in.
I will want to speak to you about your past later Captain, particularly if you could help me further my studies however I thank you for your aid now. Please give Jade my best.
Christopher waste little time activating the rune, attempting to see if there really was some sort of message.

Cerberus
The young detective, tough, he may yet live another hundred years or more, listened well to the captain explanation and made sure to memorize the informations has needed. He nodded. At the mention of his partner been back from her ordeal, he let out a sigh of relief. And even if it pained him to not be able to welcome her back into this reality, he obliged to the captain’s request.
-So be it, say hello to her for me will you.-
He ask with a smile. Turning back to the others, he watched as Christopher seems to want to do something.

Christopher’s magic reaches out and there is a moment of resistance as the spell seems to absorb the power that is put into it and then something seems to click. Click however is the wrong word as it is a click without sound or motion. Rather it is a click of energy and mind as some long ago process snaps into action. Before him, though seen and heard by everyone, is all of a sudden is his grandmother.
Dressed as she usually was in a smart dress and elegant woollen cardigan, the grey hair that she never bothered to dye is pulled back in a bun. Everything is exactly as he remembers from the pendent on the necklace around her neck to the crease lines across her face.
She smiles making the creases stand out, exactly as they always did, and she speaks.
“Hello Chris,” She says. “If you are seeing this, I am no longer with you and a number of things I imagined for your future have come to pass. First of all, you have discovered your magic. I’m both happy and nervous for you, magic runs in our family, though seems to skip generations, but i knew the moment I saw you that you had the talent. For me it has been both a joy and a burden. I pray that you have found the same joy.”
“Secondly however if you have not already you are about to discover my greatest mistake. Beyond this door is my workshop and in that workshop is an item of power. I have something of a gift for ancient magic. It has always seemed to me that the magicians of the past have had such power in their hands that make todays wizards pale by comparison. Foolishly I thought to recapture some of that ancient glory. I discovered hints of a magic system that predated anything I had ever heard of so I sought to unravel its secrets, then into my hands fell this item. It was a trap but I was so obsessed with my quest that I didn’t see it.”
“Chris, the reason I left was to protect you from the consequences of my falling into this trap. I have placed around the item the best wards and defences I know how to manufacture. Please, Chris, please just leave it alone. I have placed myself beyond the reach of the person who thought to trap me. Without me they cannot threaten you, and without the item they cannot threaten anyone else.”
She sighs.
“I know you though, you are stubborn, just like me. For that reason now you have activated this part of the spell you have control over it. You decide who passes and who does not.”
“Now you have discovered this spell, I have no doubt you will discover the other spells I have left around the house. I hope that you find them useful.”
“One final word, the magic the item was made with was lost with good reason, to record that reason even here is too great a risk, but trust me. Somethings lost are not meant to be found. If you want to learn more that will be your Odyssey to embark on. But I warn you, truth can be a real pig once you find it.”
“Take care Chris, and know that I will always love you.”

Christopher stands there stunned for a moment mind racing at all the possibilities. I am sorry I am rather sleep deprived here, I think I need you two to help me process all of this. 1. People are attacking my home because my grandmother has hidden something here as well as herself due to how dangerous it is? 2. there are apparently many magical areas of the house I have never been powerful enough to see 3. The bitch who might be able to shed some light on ancient magics revealed this information and then pranced her conniving ass right on out of here? 4. And she did not even bother giving me orders on what to do about a risky investigation method?
Is that all of it so far? I feel I am normally a fairly even tempered individual but this day is getting to be a little much, furthermore whatever my grandmother has done has affected someone unsuspecting and mundane.
Christopher reaches out with his magic and attempts to become immune to it's hiding affects, if he believes himself successful he will fix the part of the spell that has been injured and then attempt to learn the energy signature in order to search out the rest of the home.

Cerberus
The young detective listen as the grand-mother spoke. He was paying attention and to be honest, this was like it fell out of a fantasy novel or something, but he was the last person to complain since he was himself a fae.
-If I understand correctly, there is either much to be done...or nothing at all, it depends honestly on your will to go trough it or not.-
He said to him, tilting his head on the side.
-This is your family legacy, wether you want to preserve and discover its secrets is up to you, or you can do as if nothing ever happened and leave it at that, nobody gets hurts and risk anything.-
He added.
-Anyway, we will be workings on this as a team, so what will it be?-
He said.

Whipping around to face Cerberus with a smile that looks as though Christopher is about to eat the young man for dinner.
Yes, he hisses, let us sit on our hands why my grandmother is threatened into throwing herself into a self-imposed exile for another decade, after all sitting back and doing nothing why the people of Gotham suffer is what this police department is good for is it not? You can see magic and other than that one nothing is off-limits to you here. I would suggest we start looking, after all we might even be able to find something that could help with the current case.
**************** Cerberus ran smack into one of Christophers challenges. Immediately after his own grandmother activated another one. Since she is not here he targeted the fae.
The allocution is the same as before since that was not resolved.

Cerberus
-There is no need to snap at me friend...-
He said, a bit taken aback, but he would not yield here.
-What I am saying is that this is your family business and as such, your the one with the most insight on what to do and how to work about it...-
He said, shrugging, lifting his hands in the air as a sign of peace. He just let out a laugh, finding this amusing for some reason, but of course, with all the seriousness of the case, it wasnt so was it? Sometimes he himself didn’t know better then why he did some of the things he did. Shrugging off, he simply nodded then went on his way to have a look around the mansion, looking for things that weren’t what they seemed to be.

Christopher reaches out with his magic, healing the circle on the door. He can now see it as clearly as the rest of the room and with his exclusion from its effects he can feel it as well.
The feeling is strange, powerful yet intensely familiar. Like an old book you read again after years away.
This is the feeling of his grandmother's magic. He is spread too thin to be able to sense the rest of the house but with that feeling memories came flooding back.
*Cut scene*
Christopher settled in bed listening to his bedtime story. His grandmother had been reading the Hobbit to him. Bilbo Baggins had found himself in the cave of Gollum and a riddle contest had ensued. Grandma Margaret loved riddles and with each riddle she read out she had asked Christopher to guess the answer.
"What has roots that nobody sees, is taller than trees, up up it goes, and yet never grows? Can you guess what the answer is Christopher?" She said with a smile, looking down at the little boy, her face illuminated by the reading light.
Christopher shook his head, his eyes wide at the thought of riddle contests in the dark.
"Well Bilbo knew, he was right in the middle of one after all..."
"A Mountain!!!"
Grandma Margaret had beamed
"Good job, that's the right answer."
*end*
Grandma Margaret really did love her riddles. Was it possible she had left Christopher one final one?
