SECRET WARS 12 - "...NOTHING TO FEAR..."

The combined forces of good and evil have assembled to attack Doombase on the Beyonder's Battleworld. "Look alive, everyone!" Captain America warns. "Be ready for anything!"

"Where inna blue blazes did... that come from?!" the Thing says in stone-faced shock.

HUMAN TORCH

"Flame on!" shouts the Torch and he takes to the sky.

He looks at the creature and tries to assess...

1) Whether its real
2) Whether it has any notable weaknesses

If he notices something using his new improved Reed Richards like intellect he'll call out to Captain America and the others what it is.

ACTIONS

Flight: 3 - take to the sky
Intelligence: 9 - assess the creature
If attacked put remaining 9 stones into defence (to combine with Toughness +5)

ENERGY: 9/21 (use 9 if reqd for defence)

The monster reaches out to grab the Human Torch, but he flies away, just in time. Then Johnny's cosmic sense of intuition tells him that this monster is made of sound!

HUMAN TORCH

With intellect towering above what he previously possessed, Johnny glances about... "Captain America! That creature is crafted from pure sound! It *must* have come from KLAW. Your shield is a unique Adamantium/Vibranium mix and should disrupt its form without too much effort!"

ACTIONS

"Thank you, son," Captain America says as he dispatches the monster without too much effort. But Klaw has raised an army of sound creatures to wipe out the attacking heroes and villains!

Then while the heroes and villains are busy fighting, Doctor Doom arrives!

"It does not matter of course, if you defeat my army," Victor Von Doom brags. "There is nothing you can do to harm me! No way in all the infinite universe that mere mortals could conquer one who is omnipotent!"

HUMAN TORCH

The Human Torch flew up near to Doom and spoke to him. "Victor! You say you are omnipotent! Play then through your mind the events that will transpire should you rule over all. Where then will be the challenge? Where for you the desire to improve, to change, to aspire to greatness such as no man, no one, has ever transcended? When all of your dreams are handed to you with this power any victory you achieve will NOT be yours! It will be the Beyonders! It is his power which wins, and your form merely the vessel for it. Doom, the genius, the leader, the inventor, the scientist, will not have proven himself! Doom with the power of the Beyonder will have 'won' but not by his hand, but by cheating! You are many things Victor Von Doom, but you are not a weak man. Only a weak man would win in this way, by ... 'cheating'. You are no cheat. Ask yourself... if you 'win' by crushing all the stolen power of someone else, how will YOU, Victor Von Doom, the man feel? Doom the God will have stolen your glory, and made all your previous efforts, your struggles, your achievements, and anything you strive for in the future, meaningless."

"Use the power to send everyone home and hand it back. Victor Von Doom will be remembered for that. Doom the god will not know of it, because everyone around him will be sheep who bow and scrape, and you are a better man than to want your old friend and foe Reed Richards, bowing because you are forcing him to with a gods stolen power, not because you proved you are his better. A hollow victory, if you can call it that, and it's not even yours."

Doom looks at the Human Torch with scorn. "So says the one wielding the power of Galactus! HA! Of all the fools here that oppose me, you are the least able to speak of 'cheating'. You who were the weakest member of the cursed Fantastic Four. But now you are the strongest! You should be bowing at my feet, ready to serve as my herald, for I can make you even more powerful than Galactus could ever dream! Then you'll see to what end I will use this power. I will set the world right in my image! All shall benefit, as long as they follow Doom!"

"Power granted by Galactus that I've barely used. It won't define me Doom. It never will. I, like the noble SILVER SURFER and others before him, will use the power for good and right, not to achieve my own ends! This is why I am better than you DOOM. You may have more power, but the power RULES you! Victor Von Doom the man was many things, but the man in front of me is ruled by the power he's consumed. Doom will soon be a distant memory replaced by a monster intent on ruling for the sake of it. To what end? Doom the man has a towering intellect, and though he is cruel, a tyrant, a towering ego, he is still human and retains a number of qualities that see him protect his people, rule over them justly and with consideration. You are no angel Doom, and never will be. But you are a man, and can change if you have the will and desire to do so. Using the power you have stolen will see the man vanish, replaced by a being without limits, without morals... without challenge. Waking up every day to realise there are no challenges to overcome, no worlds to conquer? Eternity will seem like a very, very long time indeed to a being so cosmically bored at being able to achieve anything they desire without using their mind, their will, their determination. Above all other things those personify Victor Von Dooms persona."

He didn't add 'towering ego'.

"Look at what the Beyonder did, and why. A being that can accomplish anything summons lesser beings from across the universe to fight for its amusement. Are you so limited in intellect to assume that you also will not be bored after accomplishing everything with a wave of your hand? We have long been enemies Victor Von Doom, but even I feel saddened at the death of a noble and powerful mind at the hands of some godlike child who summons others for its amusement."

"You're wrong about me too. If I could hand back this power, I would! I offered myself to save my friends, and I know what such service entails and the consequences. To save my friends I did this and would again. You need no herald in your current state. You need no other. What a lonely, terrible, godlike existence awaits if you walk down this path. Think about it Victor. Run that mind through the various ways this can go for you! You need no godlike power for that - Reed can do it, and so can you - the man, Doom."

"ENOUGH!"

The Beyonder has returned! Shimmering radiance issues forth with savage suddenness to deprive both Doom and the Human Torch of his stolen power!

"You did not fight for my amusement. I desire...to understand. What is it that drives you beings so? Why do you strive for tangible gains and intangible ideas? What is the nature of this thing called desire?"

"From your words and actions, I have gained enough information and will now meditate on what I have learned."

The Beyonder then sends all his kidnapped subjects back to Earth...except Doctor Doom, who he leaves on the Battleplanet, while he retires to Beyond to think about what has happened here.
