Often compared (unfavorably) with its much newer sister city of Metropolis to the north, Gotham is one of the oldest cities in America, known for its rampant crime and beautiful Gothic architecture. A generation ago the aging city underwent something of a renaissance under the direction of Gotham's "Three Families": the Waynes, the Elliots, and the Cobblepots, who invested heavily into updating the infrastructure, ensuring Gotham had state of the art police and medical facilities (including the world renowned Arkham Asylum). The saying "it always rains in Gotham" was never more true than the year Thomas and Martha Wayne were murdered in an alley, the Elliots were lost in a car accident, and the Cobblepots lost all of their money in a massive corruption scandal. The three princes of Gotham; Bruce Wayne, Tommy Elliot, and Oswald Cobblepot, were all gone from the city in short order, and hopelessness descended back onto the city like a predatory beast.
Until a decade or so ago, crime in Gotham was tightly controlled by two competing mafia families; the Falcones and the Maronis, but in the era of The Batman, the two families have struggled to keep their hold, and now both families have been reduced to minor players. That doesn't mean that no one has taken advantage of prohibition. Almost two years in, the new law of the land seems only to have multiplied every problem Gotham had. Violence is rampant, and those who stand in the way usually don't last long.
