Marija Stojanovic never dreamed of a life like that, it almost felt like it wasn't her own. She did manage to escape the Markovian rule, one of the few, as she had seen fellow citizens that were branded as dissenters fall along the way. She survived the trip across the ocean, hidden in a cargo ship, something not all of those who got that far managed. And she didn't only dodge immigration officers in the United States, despite some friends being caught to never be seen again, but her luck landed her an opportunity of a lifetime. At first she approached LexMed just for shelter, perhaps money if they had some medicine they needed testing. Lex Luthor was worldwide famous for achieving anything he wanted, a self made man, so Marija didn't think about those tests going wrong or being dangerous. It was a Luthor endeavor after all, success was basically a guarantee, tests were just to appease the government. Her compliance that was almost eagerness and her ability to survive that far brought her to the attention of the higher ups. Those medical tests were just another step in a process that started when she flew Markovia, if not earlier. Without knowing, they told Marija she was a metahuman, her powers triggered with the things she had endured along the way, and one day they manifested as she trashed one of the LexMed labs when she grew several tens feet tall. Things were set in motion with blinding speed, as if everything had been planned by someone. Her growth, and the physical prowess it bestowed, didn't seem something she could control at first. She was just that big now, although with time she managed to train enough as to return to about her normal size, at least for short periods of time if she focused. Marija hoped such a thing wasn't a trouble for her benefactor, but she should have known better. Where normal people just gave up and went by their lives, Lex Luthor saw opportunity to better the world. Marija barely imagined to live in the United States, but to be a hero there? That was beyond the wildest dreams she ever had. Of course, there was the matter of her legal status, for her to be a hero she needed to be someone people could trust, so the Luthor team soon gave her training to present herself as an American girl next door trying her best, an admirable hero. Marija Stojanovic was no more, in her place Marilyn Smith was born, an orphan protected by the corporation that no longer had an accent and could speak English like she had been born in Metropolis itself. Her identity change didn't end there, as she wasn't just a girl striving to do her best, but also a towering hero who could protect the innocent. She was the American Dream, her moral and physical stature keeping any menaces away from the good citizens of the United States. Marilyn was happier than ever, she had never thought she could be an aspirational hero like that. A life like that almost felt like it wasn't her own.
