[BACKGROUND]
=========================
Born and raised on Sheriff Street in the inner part of Dublin, Fergal grew up surrounded by the drugs, poverty, and crime of the area. His parents were good people. His father worked the line on the manufacturing floor while his mother cleaned houses to help make ends meet. Fergal was just a bit smarter than the rest of the kids in his class. Not enough to be considered a genius, but just enough for him to be ridiculed and shunned by the other students. Even though he was a head taller than most of the students growing up, his slight stature prevented him playing sports with them. Because of this, Fergal often retreated into books, computers, and the myths and legends of old Ireland.
Saving what they could from the day he was born, Fergal's parents were able to send him off to University where he focused his studies in Engineering and Computer Science. Once again, he excelled at his studies, just eking out top marks each year. Then one day while Lex Luthor was visiting the University as a guest speaker, Fergal caught Lex's attention. After Lex listened to his thesis on integrating the human mind and computers to create an entity that could function at the high processing speed of technology while retaining the imagination of a human, Lex offered Fergal a job at LexCorp in Metropolis upon his graduation.
Knowing this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, Fergal said farewell to his parents, packed up his life, and moved across the world hoping to change that same world he viewed from his seat on plane flight over. On his first day at LexCorp, Lex actually greeted him personally and gave him a tour of the facility. Right as they were wrapping up, the ground started to shake and explosions could be heard all over the city. Once the carnage finally quieted down, a somber voice full of disbelief could be heard over the radio. "He's dead........Superman is dead...."
As time passed, Fergal continued working for LexCorp going from project to project. He was proud of the work he was doing and he was proud of Mr. Luthor for the work he had done rebuilding the city, if not the world, after the death of the man many people believed to be a god. Still though, for all the work he did, Fergal did not feel fulfilled. Until the announcement of the "Supermen of America" project and Compound K. Feeling like this was his chance to finally make a difference, he requested to be admitted as a participant in the project and was surprised and exhilarated when he was accepted.
Upon being treated with the compound, Fergal could feel everything changing around him. The work of his thesis which he thought was still three lifetimes away from true potential was now just in his grasp. But in order to truly help the people of the world, he knew he would have to do something about his scrawny frame and began toiling away on a perfectly interfaced exoskeleton to improve his strength and durability. One evening while running simulations, a power surge caused bolts of electricity to shoot throughout his lab. It was at that moment he remembered the fairytales of old, and his favorite of them all, Taranis, the God of Thunder. Often depicted as a man wielding lightning in one hand and the wheel of fate in the other, he knew exactly what he must do, altering his prototype exoskeleton to include gauntlets that could harness that same electricity. As Fergal, he would use his intellect and newly awakened gifts to reshape the world; and as Taranis, he would defend it.
