So i'm set to run a game based on Red Dawn the movie. I've already worked out how my war will start and the invasion will take place.
But how would you do it? If you've ever thought about it.

First, it starts nowhere near the south east US. Too many guns.
I'd likely start with China either allying with Russia, there is a joint strike against Alaska moving through Canada to the Pacific northwest. At the same time, I'd destroy every navy base in the Western us to guam. I'd capture Hawaii (think Perl Harbor + occupation troops) to use it as a staging area for taking the west coast. I'd use submarines to hammer the east cost and keep Europe from reinforcing the US and use the Muslims to keep them from getting at china.

I agree with the blockade by submarine, and the use of the Muslim extremists, but a slow takeover will never work. Instead, a lightning strike on every base in the country. Missles strike major defenses, and the Pentagon to take out the command structure, and then hammer every military base you can reach. THEN take over Pearl Harbor and use it as a staging area. You cannot just conquer it as long as the US military is at full strength, there is no way.

The bad thing about the US, and trying to take us over is the fact that Red Dawn, while a good movie, is an outdated representation of our militatry. There's a saying my father uses to describe our military "They only show last year's model" Which is to say that if you see something on a battlefield from the US, it's next generation model or even the next one after that, is sitting waiting to be used.
I wouldn't be surprised if the US government even had bipedial tanks already... To take out the US, you have to hit the entire country at one time with EMP. You have to wipe everything out at once, or your doomed. Even then, you are probably going to lose as the military has Analog devices on hand at all times in the event of an EMP strike.
Personally I would run it like this "EMP strike over the center of the US large enough to blanket the whole of the country (which means Mexico and Canada are also effected), Blitz every major military installation with missile fire timed to enter US airspace 3 seconds after the EMP goes off to avoid guidance failure. Send in ground troops through Alaska and Florida and pray for the best..."

What most people don't know about EMP is that its not permanent... you'd better have one MASSIVE army if you're planning on dropping an EMP and attacking while everything is down. You'd be surprised at how fast they'll get that stuff back up and running. Trust me on this one Also important to note... EMP can be shielded against.

Check out the back story for Fallout 3. Sort of what Soban said. I doubt it could work but it is only a game after all. We do not have to call Stormin' Norman in on this.
