This is for a new campaign we start this sunday (Yay, I get to play instead of run for a while!).
Carl was always the thrill seeker, and a natural at sports. In high school he easily lettered in 4 different events (Football, Wrestling, Boxing and Decathalon), and earned himself a modest scholarship to carry him through the first few years of college. Quiet and unassuming, he was the cornerstone of the football team, and a person his friends would rely on when the chips were down.
But Carl Vincent had his own demon to bear. And it was this demon, his lust for thrills, that cost him his education, and most of his friends.
Never one to shy away from an adrenaline rush, Carl often went skydiving... or mountain biking... or free climing sheer cliffs... or base jumping.... snowboarding ... kickbocking...etc.... often to the excusion of everything else he considered bland. And this came to include practices and even classes. Carl was talented, and not unintelligent. That is why the family had such a hard time dealing with him flunking out of school.
He was disowned. Alone in the world with a half finished degree in physical education. But as always, up to the challenge, he bounced back. And landed right into a position teaching self defense techniques and physical conditioning to city Police and SWAT members. Be it stick fighting, repelling, or rapid enemy takedown techniques, Carl was the man the entire force came to rely on for just the right call for a given situation.
A thrilling life in law enforcement, without ever dealing with the criminals themselves. It was almost too perfect. And then it all came down around him.
Walking one of the female officers whom he had brefriended to her car one night they were accosted by 4 thugs. They remembered officer (Nancy) Williams and were none to happy about her having a hand in busting their drug trafficking a few months back. Today was payback time, and they had the hardware to ensure all went as planned.
Nancy felt confident, and she defiantly called them out, knowing that Carl was the one person who could dispatch these ruffians with ease. And then everything went haywire. As the guns were pulled out, Carl grabbed one assailant as a shield, but another too hold of Nancy. Carl heard the shots ring out as if they were both next to his ear, and yet half a mile away at the same time.
Thats when he realized, he WAS half a mile away. He, and the thug he was holding, had teleported and were standing in the middle of a road, and in the distance he heard Nancy scream, 3 more gunshots.... and then nothing.....
He felt as if he were floating on air, as if skydiving. Why did he feel this way when a person he cared about was just shot dead? How did he get there? Where was there? All this flooded his mind, and must have flooded the thuges mind too, for he turned around and stared at Carl in awe. Carl never got his name.
Bearing down on them both, from behind the thug, Carl saw the lights of the semi truck rushing on. he sounded his horn, but not risking a jackknife made no effort to use the brakes. Carl stood motionless with the thug gawking at him, clearly in as much shock as he.
Thats when the truck hit him. Vivid in his mind he can still recall the way the body practically exploded on the front of the grill, and yet.... the truck passed harmlessly through Carl. It was as if he weren't there at all. Maybe he was dead? Maybe this was an odd remote viewing? Of course none of this were true. Stark reality had settle back in. Carl fell to his knees, very solid and very much afraid.
..,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,
Carl became Shift. He has since dedicated himself to preventing crimes the best he can. Part of his motivation is this memory, and another part is the sense of justice he has. but the real root of it all is how much of a thrill it is. To the end, he is a thrill seeker looking for next adrenaline rush before the current one subsides.
He found that he had teleportation, and an odd defense mechanism that kicks in ONLY when he teleports. he becomes insubstantial for a time. This prevents him from teleporting into solid objects, and he seems to have a sixth sense with this ability, so it always seems to save him when he least expects it. Over time he has been able to extend the amount of time he stays insubstantial, but can ONLY trigger it after a teleport of at least 10 feet.
His ability to basically unassemble and reassemble his cells has also given him an incredible durability, flexibility, and the ability to heal very rapidly. He does not have reconstitute self, but in time may develop this ability also.
