DESCRIPTION
For as far back as he could remember, Al Schwartz had been interested in two things: technology and nature. He always saw that the two were intimately connected, but that “progress” often worked at cross purposes to the wellbeing of the natural world. It was his strong feelings on the matter which, in part, prevented him from making much of his life, for despite his talents, his unwillingness to work with, for, or even in conjunction to any company which he felt was environmentally insensitive inevitably caused conflicts with employers. So it was that his 25th birthday found Al unemployed and frustrated with life.
The medicine man changed all that. Al never found out his name, but the old Native American’s wrinkled face began to appear in his dreams every night. And though Al could never quite recall the old shaman’s words, he began to feel a sense of determination and purpose which he had never before experienced. One morning he awoke to hear himself saying, as if in answer to a question, “Yes. I will do it.”
As he began his work, Al found that the way was laid out for him. His own ingenuity had been given direction, aided by a growing intuition, a heightening of his senses and an even stronger bond with the wisdom of nature. He was becoming a techno-shaman. Al also found that however much money was required to subsist and to continue his work, there was always just enough in his bank account. The dreams continued, urging and encouraging him, and giving him the vague impression that the spirit of some animal had also become a part of his work.
Finally, the project was nearly complete. Had it been weeks? Months? Time mattered little, for Al had been consumed by his life’s most important work. As he collapsed, exhausted, he knew that tomorrow he would finally see its culmination. His dream that night was the most vivid of all. The old Wise Man told him how pleased he was. He explained that Al was destined to become a champion for the natural world, a technological warrior at war with technology. Al learned that all who seek peace with the Earth Mother could find their Totem, and that his own was strong. “It is a Totem of bravery”, said the old man, “a Totem of respect. His claws are sharp, his mind quick. He is a protector and his enemies fear his image. He will always be with you, for so long as you walk with pride and honor. When your task is complete, he will find you.” The next day’s labors were filled with anticipation as Al tried to imagine what mighty spirit would be his ally. His hands worked of their own accord to put the final touches on his masterpiece while he revelled in the idea that small, quiet, overweight, friendless Al Schwartz would finally have cause to “walk with pride”. He didn’t even take the time to look upon his finished work, but instead turned to the night-darkened window to watch for his Totem. As promised, it came, itself black as the night, emblazoned with markings as white as the moon overhead. It was a Totem of bravery, a Totem of respect. And Al said, “You have got to be kidding me.”
Albus Schwartz was as good as his unspoken word. The armor he named Whitestripe, though the name chosen for him by the media was less kind. His true life’s work, the battle against unthinking progress and destructive technologies, has begun in earnest. Already his enemies fear his image, and Al has good reason to walk with pride and honor. Wherever his beloved Earth is threatened, its enemies shall know the wrath of her dark avenger, the stupendous Skunkman!
