Boston USA
"I know it's been tough, I understand. But hopefully this dosage will be better than the last. Just take two every day, usually around lunch time, or when you feel extremely stressed." The doctor said to Ishbel as he jotted some notes on his clipboard. "Trying to find the right balance with all these...unknowns...is challenging as it is.." He said turning his back to her. "Dealing with your kind is typically difficult. Or so I hear. I've never dealt with a mutant before, but I've read studies online regarding the various cases." He exhaled, and then packed up his things to go. "Take care, Ms MacGregor. I'll see you on our next visit." He waved to Ishbel as he closed the door to her room.
It has been a few weeks since the incident that triggered Ishbel's mutant abilities. Throughout the weeks, trying to understand the exact situation proved to be rough for both Ishbel and her brother Duncan. This doctor Duncan found tried to help, but as an online study showed, it can be tricky and almost impossible to help treat mutants medically without specifics in mutant traits; Something Ishbel did not have currently
Hearing the doctor's footsteps leave her room, Ishbel looked to her new medication. Medicine was definitely tricky. Getting the exact right dose amount to calm her and not have her go berserk was challenging. The last dosage amount damn near gave her violent mood swings. Add the fact that her brother tried his best to keep her mutant powers a secret, and you've got one hell of a situation.
"Mr. MacGregor." Ishbel heard the doctor in the living room speaking to Duncan, her brother. "Two issues here. As stated previously, I cannot properly give a dosage amount until I bring Ishbel into the hospital to do various tests. You not complying will only result in-"
"Look! Just do your damn job and do whatever it takes to get her more calm and stabilized! You know I can't take her into public. Plus, the amount I'm giving you should cover whatever you-!" Her brother cut the doctor off, but was cut off himself.
"That's the other matter, actually. ..The price for this medication is going up."
"What?!" Duncan screamed. "N-n-n-no! I'm already paying out my ass to get this from you! How the hell are you going to raise the price on me?! We're barely making it as it is! This isn't right!"
"I understand, Mr. MacGregor. But if you wish to do things the RIGHT way, you'd go through the proper insurance instead of this back-alley routine. Even if your sister IS a mutant, she can be covered under any insurance so long as you hide that fact."
"I already told you, we're not covered.." Duncan said. The shop he operated was barely keeping steady as it was, it couldn't afford any type of insurance for it's workers.
"We'll in any case, taking this medication from the hospital is no easy task. The risks are getting higher, and therefore so is the cost. If you cannot pay for the next batch, I'm afraid our business will be over."
"You rat-bastard doctor! I'll..I'll tell the hospital what you've been doing on the side!"
"No, you will not. Otherwise you'd put you AND your mutant sister in danger. Judging by how much you're willing to pay for her medication, I'd wager you're only bluffing. ..have a good day, Mr. MacGregor. I'll see you when you need a refill." Ishbel heard the doctor leave the house.
"Shhhkkkk!! Fuuuugghh!!!" Duncan screamed in frustration.
..The house got quiet for a few moments. The silence was broken, though by Duncan again. This time it was him calling to Ishbel. "Ish! ..can you come out here please?" He asked. "I....sorry, I-.." Duncan seemed to have scrambled brains. "The doc. He tell you how much to take this time?" He looked scatter-brained still, until calming down and being able to stay in one place.
"You uh..good?" He asked, a hint of anxiety in his eyes. Ever since the incident, Duncan never looked at Ishbel the same. He was always paranoid. Afraid she'd explode and hurt others, hurt him. Despite this, though, he did do his best to protect her. Hiding the evidence of the incident as best as he could, covering up tracks, and answering to any questions that came up about the situation. All to protect his sister who he dearly loved, but was deathly afraid of.

"Hmm" Ishbel quietly nodded to the doctor instructions. She missed having music, that always helped before, but now she couldn't wear headphones without melting them with her hair aflame. "Around lunch" she repeated, mindlessly. It was hard to focus on his words, she had taken her last pills before the doctor arrived there and she fell all kinds of numb. She knew she had to be angry, or sad, or both, but she couldn't quite reach that place of emotion. "Mutant..." she mumbled as the doctor went out. So that was what she was? One of those freaks from the news? Should that bother her? Frustrated that her life had changed?
She didn't want to avenge her father, she had already done so in the act reducing one person to ashes. But she didn't feel good about it. Or bad. The few days after the event had been mayhem, a blur between medically induced unconsciousness and the dangerous flaring of her powers when she was awake and processing what had happened.
Reaching for a lock of her hair Ishbel looked at it flare and sparkle. It was still hair... up to a point, but it seemed to turn into fire at the end, it was strange and baffling and yet she could only stare absentmindedly at it while her brother argued outside. The medicines were a problem, her condition was a problem, money was a problem. It wasn't quite new, right? Ishbel had always been a problem, money had always been tight.
Ishbel put her black jacket over her shoulders and walked out the room. Band and MMA posters covered the walls of the otherwise stark and cheap room. Her family never had much yet she rarely cared. Then again, that had been the death of her father, right? Did mother also die because they couldn't afford a doctor? She didn't know, nobody told her much.
"Dunn, I'm okay" Ishbel told her brother, her voice dull and emotionless. Normally she would be all around, speaking loudly, but if that was a source of problems when she didn't have powers, now that she did it would be simply impossible to handle. "Two around lunch..." she tilted her head, she didn't even know what time of the day it was most of the time. She couldn't sleep in her bed anymore either, nothing flammable could be near her, or a couple of steps from her if she had a nightmare, so she had been sleeping in a corner of the empty basement, where the concrete floor didn't result more than blackened by her fire.
"I don't know what to do" Ishbel admitted to her brother. "I don't know even what I want to do" she paused, lost in thought.
"I think I'm broken, Dunn" she looked at him, perplexed, her black and yellow eyes devoid of emotion. "But I'm not scared" she added truthfully. She didn't feel much at that moment.

"Just...stay calm and lay low for now I guess. Until we figure out how to deal with it.." Her brother answered with low energy. He picked up another bottle of Ishbel's medication, looked at it, shook the bottle, and put it back on the table. "Two around lunch, huh? There's 30 in here, and 30 in the bottle he gave you. That's 60 in total. 30 days worth.." He sighed.
"I wish I had your courage, then. ..but you're not broken. You're just...different." He looked down. "More mutants have been shown on the news, so maybe it's more common. Maybe they'll find something to help you, I don't know..I just.." he shook his head. "We'll find something." He said hopeful.
"They've been attacking mutants too..it's been all over the news. People are scared of 'em. You might not be scared, but they are." He said pointing to the outside world. "I don't want them finding you... You understand why I can't have you leave right?" He asked already knowing the answer. They've had this conversation multiple times in the few weeks that have passed since the accident.
From the local news, there hadn't been any mutants appearing, or any anti-mutant rallies happening in the nearby Boston area, so that was good. But Duncan definitely didn't want the first one to be about his sister.
"So staying low is all I've got for you.." He sat on the couch, palms in his face. "I don't suppose you have a plan? Or...preference?" He asked her as if shooting in the dark.

"A month is a lot, but..." Ishbel looked to her brother, tilting her head. The doctor himself wasn't sure of the dosage, so... how could she be sure herself? And what if something riled her up? "If it turns out I need three instead of two... it would be twenty days, and if I need even more..." she wasn't going to do the math, she always lacked the focus and patience for it and it didn't matter anyways. They'd have to deal with the problems as they came.
"I didn't mean broken for the..." she gestured to her flaming hair, the weird eyes. "I wasn't well before... but my outbursts didn't cause flaming explosions back then" Ishbel simply stated. "Now I have the pills and I'm calm but... do you think I'm still me? Do you like this Ishbel more than the one before? Both give you problems..." she realized, sighing and feeling bad for it now that she had some perspective, her hair billowed and ignited a bit more, but nothing worrisome.
"I know that we just have each other now Dunn" Ishbel accepted. Her hair shone a bit for a moment and returned to normal. "But if I was trouble for you and Dad before" her voice cracked a bit mentioning him. "Now he's gone and I'm even more of a ticking bomb" Ishbel simple said things as she saw them, without medication she'd be frustrated, raging and probably part of the neighborhood would be ashes by then.
"Maybe I should be on an institution, locked up" Ishbel voiced. She didn't want that, of course, but medicated she didn't have the drive to resist the idea and her brother would be calmer then. "Maybe you could come visit when you miss me" she added, knowing that the idea would hurt Duncan. He couldn't do a thing to save their father, he couldn't quite save Ishbel from herself. Her hand reached for his, a poor substitute of a hug, but with her hair like that it was wiser not to get too close.

"Yeah..I know.." Duncan agreed with her, cutting off her mental math attempt.
"What the hell kind of question is that?" He asked. "We all have our problems. Even dad had his outburst. You should have seen him in the shop sometimes...guy blew a lid half the time. Literally." He sadly chuckled, thinking of his father.
"Don't talk like that. We're already on a good path. The doctor says he's trying to find stuff to help. ..we'll keep our faith in that for now until something comes along. ..if something comes along.."
"Hey! You may have...exploding fits or whatever, but I'll still kick your ass if you talk like that, okay?!" He said, half joking, but the fact that there might have been some truth to her statement made him a little emotional. "Look.." He snorted his nose, implying he actually might be getting a little emotional. "We'll work something out, okay?" He looked at her, his eyes glassy-looking from the pre-tears forming in his eyes.
*Knock knock knock.*
A knock at the door seemed to break the tension in the house.
*Sniff* "It better not be that assho-..the doctor again." He said implying he didn't want to see the doctor right now. He nodded Ishbel to stand away from the doorway so she couldn't be seen just in case it was someone who didn't know her. He opened the door with a questioning hello, indicating he didn't know the person at the door.
"Hey there, pal. I got a bike here that needs fixing. Hear you're a solid mechanic to help a guy like me out."
From the doorway, Ishbel couldn't see who was outside, but she saw a puzzling look on her brother's face.
"Uh, yeah I can do some repairs or something, but...why are you at my house for this?"
"Trevor told me you lived here, and I didn't have time to wait for you to open your shop."
"Um, who's Trevor? And in any case, I only do repairs at the shop, so you can swing by there later today, I'll be opening up pretty soon, was just busy today, but I'm good now-"
"Like I said, I don't really have time to wait for the shop, so anything you can do from here would be appreciated."
Ishbel noticed Duncan looking down in shocking awe. "This..is a lot of money.."
"Like I said, kinda in a rush here. Any tools you have here can work I'm sure."
Duncan looked confused, trying to figure out exactly what was going on. But ultimately he was brought back to his senses. ..only to be thrown another curveball.
"Hi! I'm his daughter!" Ishbel heard from outside. Some other voice just popped up out of nowhere, this one sounding like a young girl. "While you're fixing his bike, can I uh. Use your bathroom? Reeeeeally gotta go!"
Duncan looked shocked at the new person that Ishbel just heard. "Uh.." was all he could say while he looked at her from the doorway. What happened next shocked Ishbel.
"Y-yeah. It's just down the hall here. First door to your left." He said almost confused, but surprisingly calm.
"Thanks!" The girl said.
"H-hey, kid.." The man sounded like he was against it. But even so, the girl Ishbel heard came strolling passed Duncan into the house. Despite being told it was down the hall, first door to her left, the girl still took her time to look around the house until she spotted Ishbel. Looking at her, she made eye contact briefly, then very obviously looked at Ishbel's hair, then made eye contact again. She then simply smiled, waved to Ishbel, and followed the direction to the bathroom.
"Ugh..sorry. She's a little much sometimes.." The man said, ALSO WALKING INTO THE HOUSE. "Sorry for the intrusion." The man simply said, standing in front of the doorway.
"Um. No, it's totally fine.." Duncan said not bothered by either of their intrusion into the house. This was definitely odd to Ishbel. Duncan was a stressball and was easily paranoid, so him letting two strangers into the house was definitely odd. Judging by their interactions at the door, it was easy to assume that Duncan didn't know these people.
The man who walked in was was wearing a biker jacket. Nothing too distinctive about him at all, so he definitely wasn't familiar. "Nice place here.." The man looked around until he spotted Ishbel. "Miss." He nodded his head to Ishbel.
"So what say we get to fixing this bike, huh?" The man suggested, looking back to Duncan. Ishbel noticed Duncan's face, he looked very perplexed, as if he was trying to figure something out. She also noticed in his hands was a few hundred dollar bills.

A little smile appeared on Ishbel's face when Duncan talked about their father. He was gone, but he'll always be alive in them. Duncan and Ishbel were unrelenting like him, though Duncan had the same signs of their father's inability to let things go even if they hurt, while Ishbel had of course Robert's notorious temper. She wondered what they got of their mother, but once again she didn't know almost anything about her.
"The doctor is looking for ways to get more of your money with less risks for him" Ishbel noted. Without a bubbling volcano of fury threatening to burst all the time, perhaps she had a clearer perspective than her brother. Duncan's signs of emotion made her hair flicker, even if she still kept most of a poker face. "We'll work something out" Ishbel said, wondering if normally she'd be crying. It hurt seeing her brother like that but... nothing. She was still mostly calm, though the knock at the door startled her.
What happened next had even the medicated Ishbel baffled. There was no way Duncan would let strangers into the house, specially with such a silly excuse and while his sister was supposed to be hiding. Ishbel didn't quite react in time, so the girl did see her while the man wandered in too. Ishbel noticed the money in her brother's hands, it was quite a lot, but that couldn't be right. It couldn't be just money.
Right?
Ishbel, rattled by the strangers in the family house, abandoned her hideout and came out to face the man. Her hair was already making flames, but nothing out of control, just a bit more unruly than a few moments ago. "Who are you? What are you really doing in our house?" Ishbel asked.
A couple of thoughts popped in her mind. One, that even if maybe she could use her powers to kick them out of the house, she didn't want to risk killing anyone else again. Two, that just trying such a thing would probably burn the family house down.

"Can't say I blame 'em. I'd do the same. ..but not if it meant someone like you suffered for it."
"We always do. Just a matter of how.." He said, as the tended to the door knock.
...
After the initial shock of everything, Ishbel seemed to jump the gun that Duncan clearly should have jumped.
Ishbel's mood was still stabilized, but it was understandable why her temperament would be rising. Two strangers have just entered and have discovered her. Weeks of hiding undone in a single moment, it would make anyone a bit paranoid and nervous. Noticing that she was getting a little riled up, the man simply put a hand up towards Ishbel.
"Hey now, let's calm it down girly.." He said, almost on guard.
"N-no.." Duncan shook his head as if he had realized something. "N-n-no sir, you have to leave, y-you can't be here." Duncan said looking at Ishbel. It's almost as if he realized what the situation was again.
"Aaaaand that's my cue!" The girl from before stepped out from the hallway and lightly patted Duncan's shoulder. "It's okay, we're friendlies. Just here to chat. Nothing bad." the girl said smiling, her pats to the shoulder now turned to a rubbing of Duncan's shoulder with one hand.
"Really. Just want to talk." The man said, arm still raised towards Ishbel as if still on guard.
"That should be fine, right?" The girl said smiling towards Ishbel.
With the initial shock leaving Ishbel's body, she noticed this girl had dark blue hair, and seemed a bit bubbly. Nothing recognizable about this girl other than her hair, and certainly nothing out of the ordinary with her either. What was out of the ordinary was Duncan's behavior.
"Just talk? Nothing about a bike? You just want to talk?"
"Yep. So keep calm there bud, we just need to chat for a second with your sister."
"No I...really do need that bike fixed. I didn't pay you to just talk."
"Okay...um..Ishbel? Do you know these guys?" Duncan asked, not a hint of worry in his voice. He was surprisingly, even worryingly calm about the entire situation.

"Don't call me girly, even less in my own hou-" Ishbel knew that she shouldn't pay any mind to those things, but even with the pills her hair billowed a bit. Duncan's nervousness and the other girl's intervention made Ishbel realize what path she was starting to walk and gave her pause. Ishbel blinked slowly and started to breathe deeply, slowly. It was fine, she was under control.
Her eyes darted to one another, the Ishbel of the past would have pushed that weird man out of the house and probably erased the girl's smile off her face with a punch. "Hands off my brother" Ishbel stated, before focusing on Duncan. "I don't know them Dunn, are... are you okay?" she asked, returning back to face the blue haired girl.
"You say you want to talk" Ishbel's hands closed into fists, her not resorting to violence a miracle of medicine and how delicate the situation was. "Then talk" she grunted. Slowly her talking pattern was less dull, getting closer to the Ishbel from before.

The man put his hands up and made a facial expression as if to signal "Fair enough." (OOC: Future pet peeve acquired!)
"Whooooops! ..protective." The girl chuckled.
"Y-yeah. I'm fine. Surprisingly.." He said looking at the two newcomers very confused.
"Fine, and calm." She said patting his back once more.
"Yeah. Calm. Very surprisingly calm.."
"That'd be because of your truly." The girl smiled.
"Well kid, since you jumped the gun, you wanna-"
"Totally!" The girl cut the man off. "I'm Sam, and this is Logan." She pointed to herself and her buddy here. "We're mutants! Logan, do the thing." She said. This girl was way too bubbly it seemed. But she said they were mutants?
The man sighed, looked at the girl in disbelief of her approach, and rolled his eyes. He showed the back of his hand, and what came next surprised Duncan and Ishbel. Metal-like claws slowly sprang out of the man's hands, extending to maybe around a foot long out of his hand.
"W-woah wh-what is-.." Duncan reacted to the man's claws extending out of his hand.
"Hey hey...calm. calm." she said patting his back some more, and after looking at Ishbel, quickly took her hands off Duncan again with a nervous smile.
"Heh heh. We...want to help. If you'd let us."- The girl simply stated.

Only the numbing nature of the medication allowed Ishbel to stand there and keep her cool, though her hair flared slightly on occasion and she was starting to feel like her old self, she did her best to breathe and relax. Nothing had gone wrong yet, so perhaps she shouldn't be too hasty judging or losing her temper. "You want to help?" Ishbel asked. "Try to not do the claw thing again you oversized kitty, or I can't promise I'll be able to handle myself" she directed at Logan, soon to turn and face Sam herself. "I don't know what you are doing here, but I had enough of you getting touchy with my brother" Ishbel raised a finger. "Stop doing your mutant shit, or I'll do my mutant shit and then it will be the last thing you see" she stated, the room definitely got a couple degrees warmer. "Dunn, come here, get away from her" she told her brother. "What's that help you're talking about? Charity? A handout?" Ishbel questioned, side eyeing the money in Duncan's hands.

The man, Logan, just sighed at the comment. His face had a "Why do I have to deal with these kids" expression.
"Hehe..OVER protective, got it!" The girl said chuckling, but throwing her hands up in the air again.
"Uhh?" Duncan looked at the two, and then slowly moved towards Ishbel to get to her side.
"We have, like, sort of like a school for mutants. Where we can live without fear, and are helped to control our gifts. Oh! Like, mine is obviously making people a some emotions. But, but I have to touch them to help them feel those emotions. I was a MESS before I learned to control it!"
"Was?"
"Shutup." She put her hand on the back of Logan, making him more calm. Logan looked frustrated that he was forced to feel calm. "So...we came to invite you come to the mansion. ..if you wanted! No pressure of anything like that. It doesn't cost anything, and...and.." she tried to think.
"Look. Can we put the guards down?" Logan asked to Ishbel. "We're just here to help you. If you want us gone, we can leave. But I've been trying to get in touch with you and your brother for a few days now, and he's kept giving me the work around. I just thought an up front approach would work a lot better." He tried to reason.
"Except you tried to HIRE him instead of being up front like I said to do!"
"'ts called a foot-in-the door, Mood Swings. We're here now. If you want more information, just ask. Otherwise, we can get outta your...firey hair."
Looking to Duncan, who was slowly losing his injected calm attitude, he showed a face of understandable confusion, but one also of contemplation.

Old Ishbel would have already punched the chuckle out of that girl one or two remarks of her being overprotective of her brother ago, he was the only one she had left, of course she was going to protect him. Her family may have struggled over and over, but they were close to each other in their own way. At least Duncan was listening to her, even if slowly. Was he safer by Ishbel's side? He had to be, she had to believe that. "The sort of like a school part I'm not sure about" Ishbel was surprised by the whole deal, could a place like that really exist? She didn't care much about the school part, but even then, she took a small step ahead. "You learned to control it?" Ishbel asked eagerly, hope in her black and yellow eyes. "The school is a mansion?" she added in a wince. That couldn't be, could it? Then again if someone could build a place like that and go around handing out hundreds of dollars sure had to be rich. The odd recruiters argued a bit, while Ishbel made sure Duncan was okay by her side and her mind raced, deciding what to do. She had always been trouble, a girl more of action than thought, but her father told her she had a big heart, that the world being the way it was didn't mean she should stop trusting people. "If they fool you, you can always punch them" Ishbel whispered, a joke from her father. "Lets say I trust your sales pitch and I believe you have a mutant mansion school or whatever" Ishbel announced. "We would have to see it before agreeing to anything and you better believe I'll burn your ass off if you try to trick me" she was being more and more emphatic, the situation making her nervous enough to notice it. Ishbel took one of the new pills, so much for them lasting a month, and gulped it down.

"We all do."
"Like you, my powers were going out of control when I first found them. I...kept manipulating people's feelings without even knowing it was happening. But now I can focus it on my touch." She said pointing up, displaying her finger. "We have great teachers who help us.." She said sincerely.
"Yup! With a giant yard around it. Plenty of space for everyone. It's not like, super crowded or anything."
"She's got a hotter temper than you, Logan." The girl smiled. Logan meanwhile seemed annoyed yet again. "But that's totally the plan. We don't make you sign, like, a contract or anything. You come in if you want, and you can leave whenever you want. Nothing else." Sam said smiling. "So....?" She eagerly wanted to hear Ishbel agree to come.
"So, what? You just take her and help her control her powers, and that's it?"
"That's it."
"Well, no, Logan. We also go beyond and try to help others. Like me, I'm just a student, but I was asked to help come with Logan to ask if you wanted to join us. So we try and help others like us. If you joined us, in the future you might be asked to help someone too. We learn to use our powers, and then we try to help others with them if we can."
"Ok so your little calm spell is wearing off on me, so excuse me for being an ass for saying this or whatever, but what exactly do you get from this? What's your angle?"
"The professor just wants humans and mutants to be able to live in peace. That's it." The girl shrugged.
Without taking his eyes off of the two, Duncan nudged his sister. "Wh-what do you think about this?" He asked her.

Ishbel listened to the explanations and to her brother's doubts in silence, as the numbness of the pill she just took washed over her, helping her stay stable and without starting a fire. Duncan's direct question towards her helped Ishbel focus on the task. "The whole being asked to help sounds a bit sketchy" Ishbel commented out loud. Many of her fights had started for such a reason, so she wasn't a stranger to helping others. One kid got bullied in school? The bully got sent to the hospital so they could stitch their face and Ishbel got expelled. Some dudes were being homophobic in a new school? Another fight, more stitches for everyone including her, and another school that expelled her. Before medication Ishbel would have jumped at the chance to take part in something like that, helping others like her, but now she could accidentally end up killing someone and she wasn't that sure she could deal with that. She still remembered how it smelled when she killed her father's murderer. "Dunn, it may be risky, or weird, or a trap..." Ishbel sighed. "But we have to check it out, don't we? I don't... I don't want to keep downing pills all my life, providing that works. I don't feel like myself half of the time" she explained, showing her more vulnerable side. "We can take Dad's car and go for a look at it? If we don't like it, we go" she said to Duncan, before turning to face the recruiters. "You heard me, Sam, Logan. We'll give it a chance, it better be worth it" Ishbel said, not really as a threat or at least not in full. She really needed it to be worth it.

"The main goal is just to help you control your power. If you don't want to help, you don't have to, it'd just be nice." The girl smiled.
"Awesome! You'll love it!"
"I think it's worth checking out...but, I don't know. Seems too good to be true.." He stated.
"So now that that's settled, there' still a matter of my bike...really did need that fixed. Those hundreds in your hand ain't for nothing.." Logan pointed out.
"Uh. Oh, you were serious. I guess..I can take a look at the bike?" He questioned, while pocketing the money.
"Sam, you stay with her and answer any questions she may have about home. Me and Mr Mechanic will fix up the bike. Should be quick and simple."
"Works for me. Ish, be sure to get any questions you have answered from her. Any red flags, and we can call it off. But, I guess I'm just glad to be paid this much for a 'simple' bike fix. We'll see how it goes." He patted her shoulder.
"Well, I'll stay here with her only if she's okay with it. If not, I can...just wait outside?" She asked Ishbel, not wanting to offend her perhaps?
