BACKGROUND Bernard Valagant was "born" 17 years ago to the six year old boy Bradley Keening whose divorced mother had just begun dating a new man. Bradley was alone in the world, he alienated himself from his mother most of the time, even though he loved her very much. He forced himself to be strong and to deal with his own problems. At least, he attempted to. When the stress became too much, Adamantus came to save the day. Adamantus was the armor Bradley wore to keep himself safe from the claws of reality, of his peers, his friends, even his family. No one could touch his heart as long as he wore his armor.
Unlike a traditional imaginary friend, Adamantus and Bradley spoke very, precious little, and only when Bradley was the most wounded. As Bradley grew older he began to rely less and less on Adamantus for protection, and soon realized that hiding behind the terrible suit of armor was just as cowardly as how his father left before he was born. Bradley let go of his friend, Bernard Valagant, at the ripe age of 20, three years ago.
Abandoned, and not sure how he was supposed to feel about it, Bernard entered the world of Ether, where he understood that all beings like himself originally came from and all would eventually return. It wasn't long before he realized that he was unusually gifted for a citizen of Ether, and the realization made him smile with pride. Bradley must have been an exceptional child to bear Adamantus such great powers.
Of course, Ether wasn't anymore an idyllic place than the "real world" when push came to shove, and as soon as evil reared its ugly head Adamantus came to answer it. Only now he found that he was not alone. He was joined by others gifted with great powers of their own, and together they put down this threat and ensured the safety of Ether's citizenry. Since then, Adamantus and his companions have formed the Nightmare Guard, a group dedicated to protecting the good and true of Ether from the vile and false.

BACKGROUND Son of renowned inventor Gregori Windsley, Zane enjoyed his celebrity and inherited wealth through world travel. He went on countless light-hearted and spirited adventures across the globe, immersing himself in foreign cultures, soaking in the stories and histories of his fellows scattered to all of the five winds.
His adventures began to be followed by the general public of America in particular, via television, and as his popularity grew he took on more and more dangerous quests. And much to his father's surprise and his viewers' delight he rose to the occasion heroically. Delving into ancient tombs and mysterious caverns, Zane Windsley gained reputation as a treasure seeker and skill in fighting technique, wilderness survival, and special operations that would rival elite military. He uncovered mythical items and battled esoteric creatures and his saga unfolded for all the world to see.
Finally in Siberia, he discovered something called the Black Well once translated from ancient Scythian, an off-putting and energy-sapping chasm. Enter the father, Gregori Windsley, premier scientist and technologist, and his plans for containing and exploiting the Black Well. According to local lore, the Black Well, thought a legend, was opened in the earth as a gateway to a dark place, a prison for wayward gods, created by Goetosyrus, Scythian god of the sun. Father and son worked tirelessly to build a site around the Well for months and soon a small settlement of scientists, engineers, and mechanics grew up around it. A reactor was built in order to attempt to siphon away the energies stolen by the Black Well over the centuries, but it came with a warning. The camp was haunted by the specter of an ancient Scythian warrior, wearing the garb of the sun god. It would issue warnings, intimidate workers, and worse, mysterious murders began to occur at the site.
The network filming Zane's adventures, and now covering his Siberian endeavor, decided to retract their involvement with the plan, and in time so did Zane, infuriating his father. Gregori was counting on the funding to complete his research, but he wouldn't let a small thing like money get in his way. He began, with powerful inventions, to steal and strongarm his way to success. At last, Zane left the network, abandoned the show, and returned to Siberia to confront his father and shut the operation down once and for all.
In their final confrontation, father and son Windsley were transformed by a miscalculated reaction with the Black Well. In a monumental release of cosmic energies, Gregori gained unspeakable dark powers, becoming an all-consuming black hole of a man, his flesh replaced with toughened dark matter. The world traveler on the other hand was suffused with a torrent of photons and light waves dispersing his form into a cloud-like orb of light and plasma. In the next instant, through force of will, Zane discovered that he could pull himself back into human form, and then through further exertion could concentrate photons into himself to become highly dense; stronger, tougher, heavier. Father and son battled, and though the father's powers were more frightening and formidable, they were more difficult to control, and light won over darkness. Zane destroyed the reactor and with a heavy heart surrendered his father to the authorities. He hoped in time, his father could forgive him, but time only served to further shatter his psyche driving him to greater madness and evil.
Gregori escaped custody soon after and became a supervillain under the name Dr. Blackwell, whereas Zane returned to the United States becoming a hero using the name Will O'Wisp.

BACKGROUND A college girl who was inadvertently dragged into the world of the supernatural. Casey Kinmont became Doctor Stephen Strange's first new apprentice after he lost the title of Sorcerer Supreme. Casey first met Strange at a baseball game where she caught a flyball and then accidentally hit him in the face with it. Strange revealed to her that there was an illusion covering the baseball field and that the real game being played was between devils and her grandfather. If he lost he would lose his life. They failed to save Casey's grandfather, but Strange and Casey succeeded in defeating Tul'Uth's devils and saving many other lives. Afterward, Casey became Stephen Strange's apprentice.
Together they faced such threats as the extra-dimensional Baroshtok, the hellborn demon Virilian, and the complete collapse of magical law itself! In a battle for the souls of several little girls, Casey offered her own in order to free them. If Casey and Strange were victorious against Virilian he would return to hell emptyhanded, returning all of the captive souls he had stored there. But if they lost he would take Casey's as well. In the end they won, but Casey's soul became unhinged from her body and amidst all of the abuse of magic the integrity of space-time was endangered. Strange took an adventure via the astral plane to perform surgery on Eternity and while doing so called on every magical master on Earth to aid him. However, a rival, Baron Mordo, came only to kill the now very vulnerable body of Doctor Strange. Casey was given the choice to reclaim her soul or save the Doctor, and using magic that was forbidden to her, she chose to save the Doctor. Mordo was defeated, but Baroshtok, in payment for the magic she used, took her body to another dimension.
Strange, having been saved, was able to recover Casey's soul which still burned thus he knew she still lived. Sadly, given his dilapidated state he was unable to recover her body alone. He didn't even possess the power to enter Baroshtok's dimension without outside help. First he went to Doom, in the past Stephen had helped the villain recover his mother's soul from Mephisto, but Doom declined. He was in the middle of many campaigns that he deemed much more important even than a former colleague's quest. Second he went to Nicolas Fury, knowing that the shadowy figure had been employing Sebastian Druid, son of the deceased Doctor Druid. Under the ruse of discharging him from duty, Nick Fury sent Sebastian, along with some of the new Howling Commandos, with Strange to help him recover Casey's body.
The ensuing conflict was bitter, but in the end Baroshtok agreed to relinquish Casey's body if Stephen Strange would become the new keeper of his dimension. With no other recourse, Strange agreed and sent the others back home, with Casey's body and soul in tow. Sebastian tried to reconnect her separate parts, but he couldn't grasp the magics, and though he is loathe to admit it, even the young Druid is a more powerful magician than the fallen Stephen Strange.
With her mentor gone from this world, Casey was recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. recognizing her experience in espionage through her connection with Druid and Fury, and desiring her vast potential for magical power. With her body and soul in the condition they are, Casey was able to establish a unique magical talent, becoming a master in the manipulation of elemental composition. Using her body and soul as a conduit she is able to employ magical energies to transmute matter into other shapes, forms, and compounds by reconfiguring the elements that compose it. She keeps her soul bound to a pocket watch, the best Sebastian could manage, and now she is part of a rebel faction splintered within S.H.I.E.L.D. who do the right thing no matter what rules or laws they have to break to get there.
