Brainstem pretty much covered that one for me. For the record, I used to like DBZ too. Also, WTF is DBZ Kai? Thankfully, my kid isn't watching it, but I keep seeing ads for it on the channel he watches.

Apparently they're remastering and redubbing DBZ! Why come up with a new show, right?
Also, I love the voice actress's name for Gohan: Colleen Clinkenbeard!

Oh, so it IS just the original DBZ story. I was wondering, because it looked awfully familiar, and the only DBZ stuff I ever saw was years ago (I watched up through the Frieza thing, so whenever that was)

I mean, I think it's cool that they're re-releasing it, because it really was a great kids' show, but I just don't get why so many things are being re-released and remastered, instead of coming up with something new.
I mean, I know that isn't entirely true in the realm of children's television (because there is definitely a lot of new and, subsequently, a lot of awful out there), but, in general, a lot of what's coming out now is just re-tellings of popular stories, not in the Monomythical sense where every story is the same story, but in the "we're going to reboot Spider-Man, despite the first film coming out less than ten years ago" sense. Honestly, I'd like to see a super hero movie come out that's all original, you know? Or maybe a new super hero show that's all original! It worked for Heroes, so why not try creating a whole new universe and fleshing it out into something big?

Dragonball and it's incarnations rank as the least enjoyable anime productions that I can think of. I used to think they looked neat, but every time I sat down to watch an episode, nobody actually fought. They were already in the middle of a fight every time, but whoever was fighting would already be pretty beaten up and generally both guys would sorta float in mid-air panting a lot. And they would talk. Holy hell would they talk. Sometimes a laser blast would be in mid air for like 5 friggin' minutes while they talked about something.
Naruto does this, too. Entire conversations happen while characters are in mid-air. I know they have a lot of trouble with filler, trying to avoid overtaking the manga, but jeez, even the filler arcs suffered from this.
If I had about 100 extra hours to spare, I would spend it going through Naruto episodes, and cutting out everything that isn't just dead air or closeups of someone's expressionless face, or maybe just someone shouting someone else's name in dramatic fashion.
Sakura: "NARUTO! This is my only line."
Then stitch it all together and see if anyone can sit through the whole thing. Also, what gets left over would probably make a really good show.

I dunno, my complaints with DBZ don't have anything to do with the pacing (re: the people sitting talking a lot) and how cut/paste the whole thing is. It's one thing to have a monster-of-the-week premise to a show, but it's another thing to have entire arcs that are redundant, have very loose themes tying the episodes together, and a ridiculous power scale that will always be trying to one-up itself. Anime deals a lot with the exceptional, which is understandable because who wants to follow a story about a bunch of nobodies, but, in order to challenge the gods, you have to throw other gods at them. After other gods are defeated, where else is there to go?

Yeah, there's definitely a reason that "His Power Level's over 9,000!?!" and "one shotting Frieza" have become memes indicative of anime. A LOT of anime friggin LOOOOVES those tropes. It's incredibly lazy. I see a similar thing in comics, where whoever the new badass in town is comes around and whomps Hulk or Captain America or Thor or Wolverine or whoever, and then everyone goes "Oh my god the POWER!" and then they hem and haw for an arc before disposing of the villain and forgetting they ever existed cause this NEW guy, you see, he just one shotted the Hulk!

... and stuff like that is why I don't read comics anymore. Not that they didn't do it back when I did read them. Just that my taste for it has burnt out.

Independent comics are the best places to get your superhero fix these days, like Invincible, The Brit, The Goon (though he isn't exactly super or a hero), Hellboy, and such. I think it's cause they don't feel beholden to the cyclical one-upsmanship or the need to never change any character in any way, ever (at least for longer than one arc) in the way that the big suits do. I'm not necessarily coming down on the big suits for making those decisions, as they have a business to run, but it definitely detracts from the earnestness of the storytelling.

This is out in select theatres... but I would like it to come out in some theatres around the NC Triangle Area right about... now Anyone else seen this or have any thoughts on this one? EDIT: Also, the trailer for the "Let the Right One In" remake is out. It's called "Let Me In", and from the looks of the trailer it looks like a copy of the Swedish film. By the way, if you can get your hands on a good translation of "Let the Right One In", do so. Even if you wind up disliking the film, it's still a great break from some of the Twilight that's been going around. There is still a level of sexuality in it, it is a vampire movie/story after all, but there's nothing pretty about it. The remake has Chloe Moretz (500 Days of Summer, and Kick Ass), and if I see it, she is most likely the reason. But what do you guys think about remaking of foreign films? It's also happening for "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". A lot of complaints on movie threads is that there is certain level of: "Amuricans can't read". I actually abhor dubbed films, prefer subtitles, and know I'm not the only one that feels that way. But this obviously can't be the majority if so many people are clamoring about foreign flicks being remade in America for the "American" audience. Right? So, what is the "American audience"? On one hand you have Transformers and Twilight reigning the box office during their given times, on the other hand you have films like "Up in the Air", "Cyrus", "The Killer Inside Me" and others that have an audience as well. Oh, and can we read? Here's the trailer for "Let Me In"!

Heh, that looks interesting. I'm a sucker for anything with Take Five played over it, though. And Marisa Tomei looks surprisingly good; I thought she had taken a weird turn in recent years, but I guess I was wrong.
EDIT: I feel the need to endorse Kenny, which is an Australian film.. think it's a few years old now, but still. If you haven't seen it, it's funny and surprisingly sweet - for a mockumentary / love story about the portapotty business.

I absolutely love Marisa Tomei, very cool actress. Sometimes her decisions are a bit interesting when it comes to projects, but for the last three years it seems she's been getting pickier. She was very outstanding in "The Wrestler", and I can't wait to see her in Cyrus. I think I'm mostly excited about Jonah Hill's participation in the film though. I'm also a fan of his stuff, but always thought it'd be cool to see him dabble in something other than the Judd Apatow stuff. EDIT: That looks pretty interesting. Haha, I'll have to check it out! I love documentaries, so it stands to reason to gravitate to the mocku's as well Thanks for the trailer! Did you ever see the mockumentaries like "Waiting for Guffman", "Spinal Tap", "Best in Show", list goes on? Those are some of my favorites

P.S. If anyone can tell me what the song is in that "Let Me In" trailer, I'll give you a shiny silver dollar to use down at the corner store!
