I'm the exact opposite. All my Pokemon tend to be the same level. I see a Level 10 on my team when the others are at 15-20 just makes me feel bad. I have to get him up stronger as fast as possible. Not to say I don't have Pokemon I won't use. I only have so many hours in the day after all. I have a few rules for my team... It has to have a Fire Type. It just does. I love Fire Types to much not to include them. It has to have a Water Type, or a Dragon Type, one of the two. And odds are, it's either Gyrados or Dratini. It has to have a Flying Type. I love my birds. Pyschic is a requirement. I hate poison types SO much, I want something to stomp on them easily. An Electric type or a Grass type. Probably both, actually. I hear ya. That was pretty much my own way of doing things before, too, but then I found out how much I kicked butts with just one of'em. Also, training Pokémon after becoming a Champion takes much less time, so...... ugh. If I had more time, I'd probably do things the same way you do. But with the time I have on my hands I prefer the method I'm using now, lol. I don't really like Flying type. Psychic's great, but not my style. Fire and water... now we're talkin'. My one-man army pokémon is usually a Water of Fire type with the following moves if possible: WATER -Ice Beam -Brick Break -Earthquake -Either a Rock attack, Surf or something like that FIRE -Flamethrower -Brick Break -Earthquake -Either a rock attack or... don't remember, lol. Anyway, with those move sets, I can one hit K-O nearly any pokémons. Power overwhelming. BTW, ushima, you're right. You must have no life to be able to keep an online gym active 24/7. Or you must be Multiple man. Or Quicksilver. Or Immortus. lol. I can see why that works. Pretty cool, I have to say. But, if your a fire type, what do you do about Water? You could use Brick Breaker or something, but if they survive.... I use flying for two reasons. I back up if my Psychic gets knocked out, so I can still take on Fighters. And, it gives me an advantage over Ghosts. I like Psychics, but with a caveat. I only like one type. Fast and powerful. If you can't hit hard and fast, I don't want you. I don't want a Jynx, I want Alakazam. Or Kadabra, that works to.

what type is what? spiritomb? it's ghost/dark. *psychic has no effect on dark, and ghost is dark's weakness. Since it's a ghost type, it's own type doesn't effect it ) and yeah. . .i hear people who run gyms are usually 12 year old homeschooled kids lol Very true. Sort of like how Kingdra's Water/Dragon Type removes all it's weaknesses. I think it's still weak to Dragon, but that's it. Add in the fact that Kingdra's a pretty great Pokemon and well....

Yeah, I don't really have any crazy Pokémon stories. The closest I've got, I'd say, is that the one (and only) shiny I've ever encountered was the Poochyena you fight at the beginning of Ruby version, when you get your starter. Of course. The one Pokémon in the entire game that you can't catch is the one shiny I ever find.

Like I said, I can one-hit K.O nearly any Pokémon with these move sets. Water can be a pain... but if it's my only problem, the fact I'm often 20 levels and more over my opponents tend to negate it. And Brick Break has a high critical chance, so yes, it's a good way to... shall we say... smash through the problem. When I do train a second Pokémon, I usually take one with Electric, Grass and Dark moves to make sure I can destroy what my main pokémon has trouble with. I guess so. I just never liked Flying... they are usually weak (usually, mind you. I know there are some who kick butts, but usually they're not that powerful), and there are some which are simply much better. Fast and powerful is usually my motto with any pokémon type. If your opponent's dead, you don't need defense or special defense. ;D

... I'm not the only twentysomething who plays Pokemon? I started over with Soul Silver to get and raise a Dratini (Pokewalker) from the start. It's a Dragonite now. ;D

Nope. Although I'm only just 20, I turned 20 in August.
Cool. I've always loved Dragonite.
The thing I love about Flyers is, sure they don't do a ton of damage, but they can usually take a pounding. I've had Flyers take hits from Pokemon 7 or 8 levels higher and still be able to fight back. Heck, in my battle against the Cianwood Gym Leader, my Noctowl Athena got a fist to the face from his Primeape and was still able to take away half his hitpoints(true he put him to sleep first, but still)

I'm 23. And as far as I can say, while the Anime is for youngsters, the game is for gamers. Story wise, it's rather simple, but usually good. Strategically speaking, it's a great system. Music wise, it's pretty good at least, if not much better depending on the versions. As for the fun involved, I give Pokémon a good 7 out of 10. It's a good game, no matter how old you are physically. As long as you're young enough in the mind to enjoy a good video game... and enjoy video games in the first place. ^_^

Strategically it's an awful system. Sorry to break it to you, but the game is horribly broken. With 264 different Pokémon (only counting final forms) and only about 15 or so viable Pokémon, you have a terrible system. While I understand that there are certain Pokémon that will, inevitably, be weaker, it's a design flaw when you have so many that just cannot compete against a very small number. When the competitive game becomes a battle of "Who picks the better lead Pokémon compared to the others'," you have a problem. The games are a blast and they're good mental junk food, but the strategy to the game is not in any way well developed.

Only 15 viable? According to who?
I regularly use 30 or 40 Pokemon during a game, at the least. And they usually do just fine. Only reason I don't use them all the way through is I have to focus on my main team, which I pick solely because I like those Pokemon.
While I agree there's a fair number of Pokemon that aren't really great, and some that are just plain useless, I wouldn't go that far.
But I wouldn't call it a particularly great system either.

I have a friend whose thing was breeding insane Pokemon. I think my favorite he ever gave me was a Vulpix that popped out with a grass-type special move and Nasty Plot. That thing was a ton of fun for screwing with people's heads.

Well I guess it depends if we're talking about this from a competitive standpoint or an in-game standpoint. In-game, any Pokémon is viable, which I think is a strength, but the assumption I made is that, when calling Pokémon a game for gamers, Gig was referring to the metagame.
