<Fingers-Crossed-For-An-Upcoming-COMPLETE-Marvel-Reboot> That's about what it would take for me to buy comics again

AND THEN DR. STRANGE SAID "rutt IT WE'RE STARTING OVER."
Edit: Does anybody mind if I subvert the censor there? I don't usually care on the General board, but this is a bit different etc etc

HAHAH. YESSSS! The perfect way to do it too IMO.
"Enough is enough already. By the power of... well... me, I invoke the ritual of RETCON!"

Dude. It's a blatant ploy. To give ANY comic book author the benefit of the doubt about this is like hoping that there won't be any clouds in the sky for the rest of your life. OF COURSE IT’S A PLOY! That doesn’t automatically make it a bad story, though. This is Jonathan Hickman, not JMS.

I don't know. I mean, one of my classmate's in college died in a wreck on the way home Friday. This only got me to thinking that I've been going to memorials and funerals for my classmates since I was in high school. Whenever something like that happens comic book death just seems stupid, because you know the comic book characters are just coming back later whenever the writers thing they can make money off of characters.
As a comic book fan which death am I going to care more about? My classmate's or some character who's just going to come back to life later. That's not really a tough call. Any comic book story involving death if pointless because you know they are just coming back later, and the death is meaningless.

Not necessarily.
The story where Mark Waid kills the Thing is a good story but the story when he resurrects Ben is also a really fun story.
The oneshot where the Invisible Woman was killed … and then immediately brought her back was a waste of time, money, ink, and paper.
The story where DeMatteis kills Aunt May is a favorite of mine but the story where Byrne resurrects her is irredeemable garbage. Actually, I find that that’s generally true for both creators where deaths and restoration of status quo are concerned.
You kind of have to take every story on its own.

Well, I'm glad you can be so charitable. I can't bring myself to give a damn about a "death" when I know its utterly meaningless.

I’m not saying that this story will stand the test of time (even chunks of the Lee/Kirby stuff has been largely forgotten as time passes*) but Hickman has dropped enough hints of things to come that its obvious that he’s laying the groundwork for a long term plan. Ultimately the only thing that matters within the context of the story Hickman is telling is, well, the story that Hickman is telling. If he does decide to bring HT back during his run (and he almost certainly will) I can only hope that he handles it better than Brubaker handled Cap’s resurrection (way to kill your momentum). Regardless I’ll concede that there are a lot more bad deaths in comics than good ones and even fewer decent resurrections. I’m also not pretending Hickman is infallible just because I like what I’ve read of his F4**; Transhuman had some cute moments but it was mostly trash. *I’ll admit that my only exposure to Secret Invasion was reading tie-in books I already read (like Hercules) but I suspect the Skrull world modeled after a mob-controlled prohibition-ego Chicago wasn’t a major plot point. **And Secret Warriors. And the Nightly News. And Pax Romana. And Red Mass For Mars. PS: I suspect most of you might get a kick out of this … robot6.comicbookresources.com/2011/01/the-middle-ground-39-four-more-fantastic-comic-deaths-to-make-mainstream-headlines/(Warning: Archie spoilers in link)

Give it five years. Either he's brought back to life independently or there will be a movie-related reboot. Either way, no way Johnny Storm is staying dead.

I just had an awful thought: I know people keep saying “Oh, Johnny will be back in time for the next F4 movie” (personally I think it’ll be way before that) but what if they use HERBIE in the movie instead of the Human Torch?
We know there’s a precedent in the cartoons. ;-)

Or it could be Firestar! Anything to prevent kids from thinking it's cool to set themselves on fire.
P.S. I'm going to send myself a flaming e-mail now.
EDIT: And watch a Beavis and Butthead / Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends marathon.

Also, its my understanding that – while a “last stand” situation was set up – no one was actually shown to die in the issue. Hickman has spent so much time showing why Reed and Sue are important that is seems perfectly reasonable that he’d use Johnny’s temporary absence to show what he brings to the table.
Is it the writer’s fault that he has the Marvel hype machine turning his story into something it isn’t?

Yes.
The first thing I learned in Creative Writing 101 is that your integrity is yours to protect. No publisher can *make* you write anything. You can take a principled stand.
I get that you like this guy. But he's just as responsible for this crap as Marvel is.
