The writing and over all "thing" that was GL was reeeaaally bad, but I actually dug Thor. The New Mexico stuff in there was kinda so-so, but the Thor/Loki/Odin conflict was excellent. There was a GL2 green-lit, by the way.

Saw it last night.
It was decent, I don't think it was *really* good. I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped. Chris Evans did his job, but Tommy Lee Jones was the most magnetic thing in the picture, he seemed to ground it, really. It may have been because I was tired, but certain things really grated me, like the rushed romantic arc, which is really typical of action movies, but I didn't really like it.
The movie was very funny, and had a lot of bright moments. Stanley Tucci as Erksine was really touching. Hugo Weaving also did his job, but I kept wondering how they got his nose to actually look like that. It was also a bit cheesier than I expected, it's almost as if they couldn't play Patriotism quite straight. Now, part of the corniness was in the plot, but really, you can't seriously ride motorcycles out of explosions on a regular basis with a straight face.
Imho, it was better than GL, but not as good as Thor. For me, Red Skull wasn't resonant enough, he was just a power-hungry guy. Hugo Weaving made him respectable, but I'm not sure he was 'personal' really. We had a hint of that in their last meeting, but not a whole lot. And, for me, Hyrda's sci-fi tech really took me out of the period. Also the very last scene of the movie seemed... very off to me. It wasn't an ending, really, and it wasn't supposed to be, and I didn't enjoy that.
But at the same time, it was a clean, large scope film that took the hero through his paces and made someone who "seems too perfect" very grounded and relatable. When we see him skinny again towards the end of the movie, I was actually touched.
And then they showed me the Avengers Trailer, and I really didn't care about what had happened for the two previous hours. It was really more than awesome. It was the next level of awesomeness.

I actually liked it. It helped that I suppressed my anticipation and was pretty sure it would blow. One detail I appreciated was the music score; it gave the flick a comic-book feel I thought was a nice touch. Evans was a much better Steve Rogers than I gave him credit for.

I liked it. Chris Evans was okay, I still think he was a little bit wussirific for the role, but whatever. I don't know who played Bucky, but I actually found him more interesting than Evans, for the most part. Them making such a big point of his death suggests to me that he may be back in a future movie.
So the Avengers Trailer... uh... I didn't see Banner/Hulk anywhere. Is he not in the movie?

I noticed that too. I thought he was, but whoknows?
Was that nurse at the end Black Widow? Didn't think about it till the scene was done...

It wasn't ScarJo, but that doesn't mean it wasn't supposed to be Widow.

Hulk's still set to be in it; I think they're going to keep him as a plot hammer or something for the end.
I really liked the corniness of it all. It was very campy and very aware of itself, but also didn't play these things up too much. It knew what it was doing the whole time, but didn't do that stupid little *wink wink nudge nudge* that movies tend to do when they play campy. I also really liked the sci-fi tech; it gave the movie a bit of a pulpy neo-golden age feel. That said, I could also feel the awful first person shooter that's going to come out of this movie.
I loved the Star Wars-esque sequences and the bits of Indiana Jones references sprinkled throughout, but I do agree about Jones. I thought his acting was just bad.
I anticipate that the Cap in the Avengers will be very different from this Cap, at least in his intensity. Just from the trailer, watching him get his frustrations out on that punching bag, he seemed likely to be much more aggressive. That's not to say that he'll lose his "good guy"ness, but that he'll be way more of an ass-kicker.
In other news, WK, I dropped the term plot hammer amongst my friends and they all really enjoyed it. Specifically, it was with regards to Scarlet Witch. Wolverine wears plot armor, but her plot hammer bursts right through.

I never read a single Captain America stand alone issue growing up. Aside from the occasional Avengers crossover, he was barely a blip on my radar of other titles.
I sure did enjoy this movie though. ;D

In a rare instance of agreeing with Steve on the issue of film... yes, to both the issue of the not wink wink nudge nudging (which I really appreciated, I'm so sick of that stuff), and Tommy Lee Jones being not my favorite part of the film.

Just saw it. Made me feel like a kid again when I would watch "Raiders" or "Rocketeer" (which is appropriate, seeing it's the same director!). Would see it again, liked it much more than Thor. Definitely did everything I was expecting it to do, and then some. Really liked Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving's performance. Great time!

Just saw it. I really, really liked it. I preferred it to Thor, though not by much. Cap had a better romantic plot and better humour, especially in the way already mentioned above. Thor had a better villain, though.
That's perhaps my biggest complaint about Cap: that the Red Skull just wasn't the focus of the movie. So much of the focus was on Cap proving himself, and the allied forces knew too little about the Red Skull's plans to really fear or target him properly. Hugo Weaving did a good job with his material (you can tell because he was much more menacing before he pulled his face off; that man scowls and stares delightfully) but he just wasn't built up enough, nor was the cube, really. The cube made really effective laser guns.. not that impressive, really.
Stanley Tucci did a surprisingly good job, as I don't usually like him in movies. Tommy Lee Jones was good in parts, passable in others, and I could have used more intensity. Hayley Atwell was really good as Peggy Carter, and can I just say that it was nice to see a full-figured love interest who didn't have her assets hanging out of her outfit at all times. They really shot her eyes more than anything, and I dig that.
My friends and I all thought the mixed-race group of soldiers from the 107th was a little jarringly, well, mixed-race. Forgiven largely because they're canon characters, but casual comic book fans and newbies wouldn't know that, and it just felt really forced. Also, Neil McDonough was awful as Dum Dum Doogan, and he actually took me out of the film at least twice. One cannot un-see The Legend of Chun Li.
Again, I really enjoyed the romance. It didn't take up too much space in the film, but it was enjoyable and I felt legitimately horrible for them when they kissed at the end, knowing it was the last time they'd ever see each other. I don't expect super hero action flicks to make me feel like that.
The special effects people who did the skinny Steve Rogers at the beginning deserve an oscar. Otherwise, the effects were sufficient for most of the film, but notably awful when Cap was jumping onto the plane at the end.
EDIT: Also, the costumes and sets were excellent. Especially the costumes.
I'll say that it isn't as good a movie as Iron Man, as Iron Man was leaner and cleaner in story and action, and has the least cheese of all of the major Marvel productions. But I enjoyed it just about as much as Iron Man, if in a different way. Superior to Thor in most, but not all ways. Much better than First Class. Really looking forward to seeing how Cap fits in with the rest of the Avengers.
Oh, and that reminds me, the stinger was awesome. Bruce Banner was in it, though I'm still unclear as to who the redhead was at the end. That wasn't ScarJo? Anyway, thoroughly looking forward to Avengers, and at some point in the future I'd like to watch Cap again.
EDIT: Also the justsomerandomguy clip above was great. ^___^
