Again back to my first question. Do the benefits force fields/barriers get in the core book apply to this free force field. I know everyone has opinions on the viability of the power. As to your original question about the special benefit attached to free force fields I would say that they do not apply. I think the logic here is that this is an almost coincidental force field created as much by the sheer act of wielding ones mastery as as attempt to protect ones self. I think that the Human Torch is the best example of this (yes three posts in a row). His heat creates a sort of force field around him that has been shown to melt bullets and the like before they touch his body. It takes no concerted effort other than 'flaming on'.

I've never met a GM that would allow a "Free Force Field." The very idea breaks the grand rule of this game about not being able to raise modifier numbers by lines of experience. Plus, ten lines to raise a toughness level is too cheap. This option is most of the time out right banned.

I have never played in a game where it was banned. But that doesn't invalidate your point. As written it is poor. I like the 1 free stone per stone spent for defense. For the price it makes sense. But with an AN of say... 7 spending 1 stone for 7 free stones of attack is just plain horrible.
+1 for efficient gives you 1 stone per two spent
Some people use super efficient (+2) which is 1 stone free per 1 spent. But both are limited by AN.
Masteries tend to be the most expensive powers in the game so they get heavy discounts. But they often wrack up huge AN +'s so a +2 to a mastery is actually pretty expensive. I don't think making it function like a force-field (giving you a free stone for every stone put into defense) is unbalanced for the price.
Giving you a full force field at AN for spending a single stone however is.

Free Forcefield at 1 stone/stone played in is good for me. I allow it in my games and it has never been a problem.
