There was a cartoon called Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, with Iceman and Firestar (Firestar may be a character actually created for that show, but I wouldn't stake my reputation on it). You're right Wildknight, Firestar was created specifically for the cartoon. NBC couldn't get the rights to us Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four...or Future Foundation, or whatever the hell their calling it now...so they made an expy...who eventually found her way into the comics. That's honestly aside from imagining how the fights might go this doesn't sound that interesting...to me anyway, but what do I know it'll probably be the best storyline Marvel's published all year.

Haven’t read it and I’m not sure I will. Creative direction aside, the fights seem like huge mismatches.
However I have to give them props for the extras. Apparently the print copy comes with a digital copy and the digital copy also includes a 30 page Nova comic. Honestly the Nova comic sounds more appealing than AvX.
(Still kind of ridiculous that they charge as much for the digital copy as the print copy that includes the digital copy though. At least digital DC books drop in price after a month.)
Oh, and Ms Marvel dressed like Miracleman and calling herself “Captain Marvel” is just plain wrong. Plus the only Captain Marvel who can pull off that haircut is Phyla-Vell.

I accept that characters do change over time, but so little of it actually sticks! This drives me nuts, too. I feel no enthusiasm about keeping up with a character because anything I've read can be undone or they may die and then come back to life etc.. it's all meaningless outside of any individual issue. They make it so hard to care about a character. ~TWF

Yup, another example. Spiderman lost his spider sense last year and trained to black belt/expert levels with Shang Chi to improve his ability to fight. So, where is it? I've seen *no* mention of it, at all, save beyond an issue or two afterwards. It's like, they make a list of all his powers and new abilities, and someone loses it, so they switch back to the ones everyone knows. As for Iceman, according to the wiki source, though he has Omega level 'potential' he seems to have barely touched it, and the nearest he got to using it was when he was mind controlled by Emma Frost, who then refused to train him in his own powers use. In game terms these matchups would be pretty clear cut. We're at the writers mercy though, because it all depends on each individual write as to what abilities the character has or has forgotten

I think the characters will make a good showing of their powers for events like this, Marvel's done well with that. It doesn't mean that someone won't pull out *new* powers to win though, or that they won't get 'talked down' which is the modern version of 'rock salt/random weakness material'
Generally, if the character gets more powerful, expect that to stick. If the character loses a power, expect that to come back (fyi: Spidey got his spider-sense back in the Spider Island event)

About Iceman’s powers,
The same story that revealed Bobby was an Omega (and also introduced the Omega concept) also made it a point to mention that he doesn’t really try to live up to his potential. It’s a nice bit of characterization, really.

Recent Uncanny X-Force issues demonstrated the AoA Iceman doing some awesome stuff with his powers.

I tend to think that Iceman would be incredibly boring if he ever fully realized his powers. His ability is essentially control over molecular movement. Think Silver Surfer is silly powerful? Imagine a guy who could stop or move anything and everything on a whim.
Basically, Magneto to the 10,000th power.

(fyi: Spidey got his spider-sense back in the Spider Island event) The writers giveth, then taketh away. His kung fu skills were clearly the price to pay for getting his spider sense back (seeing as losing that was the reason he got his training). Still annoying that he should forget that stuff though.

Spider-Man was trained by Captain America (also so he wouldn’t rely exclusively on his Spider-Sense) long before Shang Chi but they never mention that either. If a story wasn’t written by Stan Lee, Len Wein, or the current writer then it didn’t happen. But he’s too lazy and/or unskilled to do it except when dumb luck kicks in. Or he deliberately holding back because he’d rather be the comic relief than the heavy hitter. Either way Iceman is the opposite of Magneto. Magneto makes the most of what he has and uses his powers in creative ways. Iceman is a godlike being who likes to ride around on iceslides (even though he can teleport) and throw snowballs at people. Not everyone in the real world lives up to their potential so why wouldn’t the same be true for fictional characters?

He hasn't thrown a $#@!ing snowball in 4 decades, can we move on please?Iceman DOES use his powers creatively, and has taken down some heavy hitters. Iceman is a bad mother, even if he's on the B-list in terms of story orientation.

Other matchups not mentioned previously:
Captain America vs Gambit
Agile, an endless supply of energy grenades, a decent fighter, Gambit has plenty going for him, but Captain America is a leader in this A vs X series so I can't see him going down.
Iceman vs Red Hulk
Will we see Icemans potential finally come out? Against Red Hulk, he'd need it.
Jugolossus vs Red Hulk
Hmmm. Red Hulk gets about a bit. I think Colossus/Juggernaut will beat Thing but not so sure about Red Hulk. One of those 'either way' things to my mind.
Black Widow vs Magik
I don't know enough about Magik to know if she's regarded as a 'big hitter' in the X Men but I'd have thought this was a mismatch.
Newsarama (source for these matchups and more) only lists comics up to June so far as I can see, so more as/when they are listed.

I was exaggerating for effect
I know he doesn’t throw snowball anymore. He freezes people with ice beams. That’s still barely scratching the surface of what he can do. Occasionally writers will allow the character to remember that he’s crazy-powerful but mostly he’s stuck in a holding pattern development-wise*. Writers who actually care about characterization have decided that this is because he’d rather play the part of the goofball (though really he’s more “sad clown”) than end up like the other X-Men. Writers who don’t care just sort of inadvertently make him come across as stupid or lazy.
And Iceman is my favorite X-Man.
*Didn’t we just talk about Spider-Man’s lack of mad ninja skillz?
