I hear a lot of people bad mouth Deadpool and I myself am not a huge fan either. SO that leads me to the question, so why is he so freakin' popular?
I mean, he's even got a movie in the works about him. What is it about an amoral, murderous, annoying mercenary that everyone finds so freakin' endearing?

Same reason 2/3rds of people playing Old Republic are playing Sith. Same reason more people identify with Batman than with Superman.
People WANT to be douchebags.

I find the character intensely annoying. My son (age 8) loves playing the Deadpool level on Spiderman Shattered Dimensions and it was the first time I'd come across the character aside from seeing occasional comics and mention. I generally leave the room and refuse to help my son on that level because I want to toss the control through the tv.

Breaking the 4th Wall is not funny. It's the opposite of funny.
Being Meta got old before I knew it had a name.

If he breaks 'the fourth wall' I assume it's similar to what Ambush Bug used to do. In which case, nnngh.

Well I dont have much experience with dead pool just marvel ultimate alliance, and wolverine orgins. Deadpool was my favorite charactor. It may be because Ryan Renalds played him. I would say over all he is second after Ironman.

Whenever something is that popular you can bet there are a number of reasons. From my perspective:
1. There simply aren't that many characters like him: the 4th wall breaking, the slapstick, the dark humour, etc, all in one package. That means that all the people who like that sort of thing are concentrated in on a single character, giving the illusion of popularity when actually he's something of a niche character.
2. He's gotten around a lot, and people know the name.
3. Yet he's also not mainstream enough (not an X-Man or an Avenger, etc, no movies yet, only recently got action figures, yadda yadda) to be known outside of comic book fan circles, thus he remains something of an inside joke. And people like being "in" on something.
4. He has spent a LOT of time annoying the hell out of Cable. I can't speak for everyone, but I hate the hell out of Cable and so this has endeared himself to me greatly.
Mostly #1, though. He's filling an entire niche almost all by himself.

The thing about Deadpool is, he makes wisecracks--admittedly, so do many other comic characters. But (and I'm going from experience, so if I am wrong, let me know) I have not found a comic book character that makes fun of himself to the extent that he will go out of the way to do stupid stuff just to mock himself. I don't know if the way I phrased it made sense.
I am personally a moderate fan of Deadpool, but I can completely understand how annoying he is. The breaking-the-4th-wall bit is funny at times, old and used at other times.
And the fact that the character is kinduv a parody of Slade Wilson from DC means he's going to be absolutely ridiculous anyway.

He’s popular because, at his best*, he’s Wolverine with a sense of humor.
Of course, that lead to him getting nearly as overexposed as Wolverine and now he’s really just a crazy person with a healing factor who tries too hard to be funny.
*I could probably count the number of people who write an entertaining Deadpool on one hand.

Which is why people are still laughing at it to this day Only a fool attempts to insinuate that popularity is an assurance of quality. Only a fool thinks his taste is correct. Its popular all right, people have fun with it and it doesnt do any harm unless you inflict it by yourself. Or someone takes it and shoves it in your throat, but then its not the tool thats guilty.
