So, Colossus has always been one of my favorite characters but he has a lot of times got the short end of the stick. Well, the writers at Marvel remembered or realized how awesome the character is and decided to give him more dimension. So, during the Fear Itself crossover, Colossus gained the Gem of Cyttorak! This gives him a dark side and depth plus ups his already considerable powers and makes him the "Unstoppable Colossus!" This has inspired me to read X-Men again!

Yeah, personally, when I read about that, I wanted to fly got Marvel HQ with an automatic weapon and a barrel of ammunition.
Sorry, not a cool evolution of the character. Just plain stupid, in fact. The last thing Colossus needed was more power and an even dumber outfit. He needs good writing, maybe a storyline or two worth caring about (which they haven't given him since he returned from the dead...)
Thankfully, he loses the stupid thing in X-Men vs. Avengers.

I have to disagree and agree. I think that this is an easy out for the writers and it is lazy on their part but other then that I think it has been handled well. I have only read the first few issues of the Uncanny and I have been enjoying it. Besides that point, he does need some good story lines as you said.
I have yet to read Fear Itself, waiting for the soft covers.
Is X-Men Vs. The Avengers a crossover?

It feels like a rather lazy stunt to me, and that it actually undermines him as a character.

I think it gives him more depth in the fact that he gains a darkside and must choose when to "Juggernaut Out" for the extra power or immunity to mind attacks but if he does so, he must fight for control with the demon powered gem and he personality definitely changes. I have only read the first two issues but I have not seen him in his human form yet. I need to read Fear Itself if that is a side effect.

A dark side and the need to decide when to buff up for extra power sounds like a nice idea for a new character. Colossus already has his own powers, so adding this on top feels like they're admitting that he's boring all on his own.

I would like to point out that he just got more of the exact same powers he's always had. How that qualifies as "giving him depth" I'm completely uncertain.
Colossus has always had a dark side. He's a deeply conflicted guy. Having a dark side does not automatically equal depth; in fact I would suggest that some of the most shallowly written characters I can name have a "dark side" including virtually every villain in every major comic book.
This was, pretty blatantly, a change for the purpose of creating excitement without going to any actual effort, in the vein of "Superman Blue" and heaps of others. It's a cheap ploy, it's deeply cynical on the part of the "creative" people who do it, and it always ends being remembered only as a pathetic failed attempt.

Colossus has never really been my favorite X-Man and I think the “upgrade” is a mistake because it robs us of a more interesting character. I understand that power escalation is inevitable (especially if “he’s really strong” is all you’re working with). However I’d rather have a nuanced villain like Juggernaut than a one-note hero.
(As far as Colossus’ characterization goes, he’s a “tortured artist fighting other people’s wars” at best and “whiniest soldier since Achilles” at worst.)

"Tortured artist fighting other people's wars" can be very compelling, though... WK hit the nail on the head. Yeah, I mean, I tend to roll my eyes at mushy Lib stuff like that, but let's face it... file off the serial numbers, and that's the prototype for a huge number of our greatest comic book heroes. There's something incredibly compelling about the notion of someone who has power, but would rather lead a simple/peaceful life. Colossus and Nightcrawler both fit the mold, and are IMO the two best X-Men outside the original 5.

Okay everyone, stop agreeing with WK, he's getting a big head.
You can better phrase your comments in the follow manner:
"Hey, WK, I agree with that statement even though I completely disagree with everything else about you."
That way he doesn't think we like him or anything. Consider this a Public Service Announcement!

Okay everyone, stop agreeing with WK, he's getting a big head. I need to send you back to Tedd 101; when people agree with me, I know it's because I'm right. When people disagree with me, I know it's because I'm REALLY right.
