A "Kick Reason Out and Do The Impossible" Science-Fantasy Setting through 5th Edition D&D
The world of Gloriantha is a world gone mad. Where once advanced technology stood side-by-side with powerful spells, the Great Dragon War has reduced much a land to a bombed out wasteland. Most of the gods are dead from the plague-like corruption from influences from the Far Realm, so that now the remaining "pantheon" is the squabbling remnants of the constellations of gods from before. Now, technology is closely hoarded by the Wizard Consortium and an elite High Elven advisers to his Imperial Majesty Emperor Leon Maximus VII. The Empire is a shell of its former self, and the former governors have since assumed their own kingdoms. Chaos is the regular state of affairs, and every day war and strife. It's the perfect setting for opportunistic mercenaries and career criminals to grow rich and fat, possibly retire as king of their own country. The best way to do that is to find and unlock the ancient secrets of the past and selling them for a profit. The best and brightest end up with Magemechs, advanced suits of high-tech armor that help them rule the battlefield.
This is going to be a heavy mix of science fiction and fantasy. Expect the lines to be crossed, then crossed again, then blurred, then erased completely. Laser rifles (and firearms) will be as valid a weapon option as magic swords, or laser swords, or jetpacks, or, as a highlight, the Magemechs, advanced suits of technomagical armor that dominate the battlefields of Gloriantha. But there will be wizards, dragons, and all the regular trappings of D&D as well.
Q and A
Q: DK, legit, have you lost your mind?
A: Probably.
Q: Sweet. How do I make my character?
A: 5th Edition D&D. Get your hands on the Player's Handbook. Character creation for first level, you may either use the 15 14 13 12 10 8 array as standard, use the 27 point buy described, or I will roll stats for you that you can arrange as desired (but let me know which you're doing somewhere on your sheet). Similarly, to assuage my own laziness, chargen is going to be painfully standard. The higher tech stuff is going to be either hoarded by NPC's or in dungeons, so the average person still doesn't have access to that sort of stuff. Yet. All the races are standard, except for the elves. Elves are extradimensional beings from a plane they call "The Undying Land," who settled on Gloriantha some 5,000 years ago. Elves were the only sentient species in the Undying Lands, so there was a whole variety of subspecies that left the plane for reasons now lost to history. Only four of these subtypes arrived in Gloriantha: the High and Wood Elves, Drow, and Eladrin. Half-Elves are the product of interspecies breeding.
Q: What gods are available for my cleric?
A: Here are the eight surviving gods of the Great Cataclysm. Everyone else died of the aforementioned plague or war. Note that these are no longer restricted by any sort of racial lines, they aren't so much allies as begrudgingly not openly hostile to one another (with the exception of Bahaumt and Tiamat, who still bicker incessantly). In fact, in some territories, a faith is emerging that worships both dragon gods simultaneously.
