BACKGROUND
=================================
Megatron is no fool, and even Cybertronians have a maxim about keeping one's enemies closer than one's friends. For all of his faults, the so-called "Seeker" Starscream was always useful, and Megatron never believed that he would actually have the guts to betray the Decepticon commander outright. Megatron was wrong, but it didn't matter in the end, because he disposed of Starscream as easily as he might swat a gnat. Or so he thought.
From the beginning of the Cybertronian Civil War, Starscream was with Megatron and his Decepticons. Initially, he longed to make a name for himself, to earn the praise and respect of their leader. He truly believed in their cause; that the strong should rule to create order for the weak, that power concentrated in the hands of those with the will to wield it properly was better for everyone. At first, it was not his plan to be the hand wielding that power. He and his "brothers", fellow Seekers Thundercracker, Skywarp, and Slipstream took pride in their role as scouts and hunters.
Time changes things, and as the ages slipped past and the war carried on, Starscream began to see things differently. He saw war without end, Cybertron withering under the massive Energon requirements for both sides to sustain the fight, bodies piling up on both sides... He saw that Megatron's chosen commanders seemed to be lapdogs and yes-bots. Even the highly logical Soundwave didn't seem to question... but most importantly, Starscream began to suspect that Megatron was mad. The Decepticon Commander was brutal, even abusive, erratic in his decision making, vengeful, and arrogant.
... unfortunately, Starscream didn't have the self-awareness to realize that him stepping in to take charge was not the answer. He, like Megatron, was cruel, ruthless, and arrogant... but where Megatron was fearless, Starscream was a coward deep down, always concerned for his own mortality over and above anything else, and his own self-interest typically overrode any other goal. Starscream was not leadership material, but as the war wore on, he rose through the ranks, and when he became one of Megatron's inner circle, he began plotting in earnest to destroy his master and take command.
When he finally saw his opening and took it, in typical Starscream fashion he botched the whole affair, and was executed for his treachery. Starscream still doesn't truly understand how, but his spark sought out and inhabited the nearest suitable body, as it will whenever his current body is destroyed. It seeks a body as similar in capability to his previous body as possible, though his first "reincarnation" involved a significant reduction in size.
