Holà, compadres!
Having hopefully learned from my past mistakes, I am attempting something again, this time in an existing universe which I know a lot about, as opposed to one I made up from scratch and don't even know that many details about.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please don't get excited too fast, I still need to work out several things before getting this show on the road. This is not a recruitment thread, please refrain from throwing concepts left and right or working on CADs, or anything too hasty. Right now I'm still deciding on major aspects of the world, and of the gameplay. I will be making my own set of rules, an entirely new D&R chart tailored for Star Wars, etcetera. So take it easy, take a deep breath, and if you're interested, please give me some feedback in the areas I need rather than go all 'OH I WANNA PLAY X OR Y CONCEPT, CAN I HAVE Z STARSHIP AND DO W THING?' Slow and easy. There will be time for those once the base stuff is decided. This thread is simply to help me know how to direct my focus so as to gather more interest when I do start the whole thing for real.
SO WHAT'S UP?
As you guessed... I want to make a Star Wars game. Heroes fighting for a better tomorrow, armies clashing against one another in an epic battle between good and evil, starfighters and starships facing one another in wars all across the Galaxy, honorable and brave Jedi, sarcastic and cunning smugglers, ruthless and manipulative crime lords, powerful and fearsome Sith lords, charismatic and savvy diplomats, quirky and confident ace pilots, terrifying superweapons, monstrous rancors, droids, Tusken raiders, bounty hunters, and so on, and so on.
SO... DO WE HAVE TO BE REBELS, OR MEMBERS OF THE REPUBLIC ABSOLUTELY?
No. I want you guys to be heroes. You don't absolutely have to be a member of the Rebel Alliance or the Republic to be a hero (Solo was a rather selfish, money-hungry smuggler who used to work in the Imperial Navy before, until he met Luke and Kenobi... yet he's still very much a hero at heart who would stand against tyranny and evil), though I do want your characters to be heroic no matter the background, and I would appreciate if you were all roughly on the same side, although nothing keeps you from switching sides eventually. For example, could you be soldiers of the Empire? Absolutely, but in that case I'd appreciate if you were not mindless puppets who blindly obey any order given to them without remorse. Think Cecil at the beginning of Final Fantasy IV; he initially obeys his orders because it's his duty, and on top of it all he's an important leader of the Baron army, but he feels horrible about it and eventually defects in order to lead a rebellion agaist his former Kingdom. That's a great example of a hero who's part of an evil faction.
IMPORTANT NOTICE 2: I have not seen the latest movies. Not Rogue One, not Episode VII, nor Episode VIII. I do have heard a lot about it, though. And while I am planning to watch them eventually if only because it is my favorite franchise of all time, I do not like a LOT of the changes Disney brought to it. I love many things in the Expanded Universe, and as such am far more likely to use material from it than the 'official' movies. So if that's not your cup of tea, you might want to look elsewhere. If you're okay with it, then please stick around. That being said, this game will likely not follow ANYTHING to the letter, as I like to make up my own stories. So even if you were to pick the NEW REPUBLIC era, it does not mean you would necessarily end up fighting the Yuuzhan Vong, if only because I am not a fan of them. I will make up my own stuff, possibly inspired from some stuff or another, or possibly off the top of my head. Also, Kyle Katarn is the one who stole the Death Star plans, so there.
IMPORTANT NOTICE 3: I have also not read every single last piece of the EU, so not everything will be 100% accurate or perfect. Some things I will make up. Some characters I might change. Some things I might ignore. It will not be perfect, but it will be Star Wars. So please, no 'yes but in the novel #163, they say that's not how things went'. I am not an encyclopedia nor a Goddess of Knowledge. XD
SO THE FIRST BIG QUESTION IS...
When?
Namely, at what point in time would that story begin?
I have various ideas. I like all four of them, but I do prefer some. Here are the choices; please read them carefully before voting, as the title above mentions. I placed them in my personal order of preference, but I'd be up for any, so please let me know the board's preferences.
1) Rebellion - Post Episode IV
Inspired by an old video game of my past by the same name, the idea is simple: We take the story as it is until the end of Episode IV, and then... anything can happen/change. The Empire is still overwhelmingly strong, though heavily affected by the loss of the Death Star. Several systems join the Rebellion in the wake of their victory, and crime lords thrive as the Empire needs to focus more resources on their main enemies. Luke Skywalker's power in the Force grows, as he already begins seeking other Force Sensitive individuals or Jedi in hiding, while Darth Vader doubles his efforts to capture him and crush any such attempts. In the midst of the chaos, new factions emerge, as the Rebels demonstrated that for all its power, the Empire was not invincible.
2) New Republic - Post Episode VI
The Empire has been defeated, the Emperor is dead. The Rebellion begins forming a New Republic (roll credits) and Luke Skywalker officially starts his new Jedy Academy, while the Imperial Remnants remain a massive thorn in the newborn Republic's side, and chaos still runs rampant as the galaxy recovers from the massive changes brought upon by the Rebellion's victory. Again, in this version, several new factions might emerge, emboldened by the crushing defeat suffered by the Empire, and the still weakened state of the young Republic.
3) Legacy - Long after Episode VI
Generations have passed since the destruction of the Empire, with the Republic having established their own status more firmly as the ruling body of the Galaxy, even though it is still disputed. Force Users are once more fairly common, as Skywalker's Jedi Academy has served its purpose well. However, darksiders have manifested once more, be it from Jedi turning to the Dark Side, or Force Sensitive individuals coming across rediscovered, ancient Sith Holocrons and similar artifacts of forbidden knowledge.
4) Old Republic - Long Before Episode I
A long time before Luke Skywalker's birth, long before the Clone Wars and the birth of the Empire, the Old Republic's constant struggles to maintain peace in the Galaxy have no shortage of adventures for heroes to pursue, either. Be it political dissidence causing conflicts between dozens of systems, the Sith being at the highest of their power, or any other mess, really, it is a dark time indeed where heroes are heavily needed as well.
THAT BEING SAID....
