Spoiler alert: Spider-Man will return to theaters on July 5th. Gasp, I know. A trailer has just been released, which I am also not going to watch because there is no way I'm missing this movie. Enjoy:

I love trailers.
I’m a hit or miss Spider-Man fan.
I walked away from this trailer much more optimistic than I expected to be.

As someone who also does not watch trailers at all, I appreciate you, Dhark.

The only trailer I regret not watching before I saw the movie was Deadpool 2. That trailer intentionally hyped up X-Force to increase the impact of the actual X-Force scene in the movie. It's one of the only movies I can think of that essentially used its trailer as part of the film. Genius. Unfortunately I kinda missed out on the joke at the time.

Ooooh, nice. Even as a comic book fan I still feel a bit weirded out by how fast this movie came to be.

Hm. Am I the only one not feeling this new iteration of Spider-Man? It's like they replaced the late Uncle Ben with the living Tony Stark. I get that they're going for the young, adorkable teen who idolizes the larger than life heroes but that's not who Spider-Man is. He's more mature in a lot of ways (if still self-conscious).
I dunno, he doesn't feel like Spider-Man to me.

I'm sure you're not the only one, but I actually really like this latest Spider Man. It's a matter of taste. Part of it for me is that I don't need to see Uncle Ben (or Thomas and Martha Wayne, for that matter) get shot every damn time. I get it. We all get it. All that is important to me is that Peter is who he is; I don't need to actually see it for the tenth time. In that way he feels like Spiderman to me. I especially like the young Spider-Man stories over the more complicated grown-up Peter ones. Before Homecoming came out, I remember thinking how much I love these fan comics by artist Hannah Blumenreich, and how they would make a great, fresh take on Spidey for Tom Holland's upcoming performance. And what we got is amazingly similar. I kinda love it.

It's not so much that it needs to play out on screen as that it needs to inform his character, which it doesn't seem to be doing. :/

Is it not? Peter paraphrased the "great responsibility" line in Civil War: "When you can do the things that I can, but you don't, and then the bad things happen? They happen because of you."
In Homecoming we see that he's risking injury, Aunt May finding out, his friendship with Ned (at least initially), and his relationship with Liz all to fight crime. Yes, he wants to be an Avenger and impress Tony in particular, but he winds up going against Tony's wishes and gets chewed out by the man in person because he couldn't sit idly by while a villain was getting away.
One of the things I like about his relationship with Tony is that Peter actually has a lot more in common with Steve. They're both little guys who got powers and only want to do their part. They don't look at the big picture the way Tony does, they just do the best they can in each situation as they comes.
Is there an angle on the "great responsibility" stuff that you feel is missing in particular?

I guess the why. WHY does he feel this way? You don't have to show Uncle Ben being shot to tell us what happened and why he feels the way he does about stuff.

Yeah, actually, I can get behind that sentiment. We're sorta left to assume he got that from Uncle Ben just by knowing the character from other products, but it's a bit of a cheat.

I dunno, he doesn't feel like Spider-Man to me. I think it’s a great young spider man as he goes through these movies and adventures he will become that more (I’ve got school, work, Spider-Man, relationships, bills, morality and stuff) Spider-Man. I think it’s a great start for future character development. He’s a dork and we see how cheeky and cheesy he can be. I hope he doesn’t lose that but become more serious as his responsibilities change.
