Day of the Octopus Mission 3: Octopus Hunt A policeman runs up to where The Thing, Captain America, Spider-Man, and Captain Marvel are gathered behind the partially charred Krupp Building. He says, "We've got a radio call from Thor for Captain America or Captain Marvel." Answering the call you hear Thor's deep voice and thick Nordick accent say: "That vile creature who calls himself Doctor Octopus hath broadcast an evil threat from a hidden lair, somewhere in Manhattan. He threatens to destroy New York to prove his vile genius."
"The other Avengers and members of the Fantastic Four are busy elsewhere, and I must depart. Thus, you four must band together to seek out and halt this menace before he carries out his threat. I will lend what aid I can when I return."

"Well thats just great! I guess I'll miss that dinner party I had planned! Just leave it to super villians to mess up a good dinner party!" Feeling a little woozy. "Just give me a nap and I'll be ready!"

* Ben sighs with a heavy heart. He had planned on going to the hospital for a visit tonight. Now it seemed that would have to wait. He only hoped she would understand. *
" Well let's find out where to start. "
* Ben turns and begins to make his way through the crowd.....*

Spider-Man starts looking around for anything he can call a clue. He finds ash, soot, char, filth, gook and sludge. Then a lightbulb goes on in his head. Maybe he should continue his search a bit further from the building.
Captain America is correct that this is no time to be thinking of fancy dinner parties. However, Spider-Man's comment reminds him that he must attend a veterans benefit dinner at 6 p.m. tonight. By now it's probably early Monday afternoon.
Steve Rogers spots Bernie Rosenthal standing in the crowd behind the police line. He should also let her know what he's doing. He recalls Radioactive Man boasting, "Doctor Octopus will reward me richly for ridding the world of you." Now, after hearing Thor's message about the broadcast, he's sure that he won't be getting any more quiet moments in the park with Bernie today.
The Thing is dedicating a new hospital wing at 5 p.m. today. It's probably visiting hours by now. He'd prefer to be with Alicia than amongst this crowd of vultures drawn to the Krupp building disaster area. However, maybe one of the workers in the shops along the street saw something useful.
Captain Marvel has an appointment in New Orleans at 10 a.m. tomorrow to look at a hydrofoil boat. Actually, Monica Rambeau does. The world still does not know that Harbor Patrol Lt. Monica Rambeau and Captain Marvel are one in the same. She hasn't even shared her secret identity with her fellow Avengers. Not even Captain America.
Spider-Man doesn't really have a dinner party planned. However, he should buy a present for Ned Leeds before 6 p.m. and go to his party at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow. If J.J. Jameson wasn't such a cheapskate, maybe he would have offered to host a grand gala for Ned. Instead, the team is having a surprise party over a box of doughnuts and cheap coffee.
Spider-Man's thoughts of the Daily Bugle are interrupted when he finds a beat up license plate lying in the street. The license number is BSN-728.

Stones:2w/6r Spidey knows that even though he is the friendly neighborhood wallcrawler the police don't think so, he would get nowhere with plate on his own. I know somebody who would! "Hey boy scout, got something over here you might be intrested in. maybe some of your friends downtown can help us out with it.?"

Captain Marvel begins to shimmer and fade," Hey, maybe I can trace Doc Ock's transmission by transforming myself into a wavelength that could broadcast his message. Like maybe radio waves?"

Spider-Man & Captain America -------------------------------------- "Hey boy scout! I got something over here you might be interested in." Spider-Man holds up a license plate, signaling for Captain America to come where he's crouched in the street South of the Krupp building. "Maybe some of your friends downtown can help us out with it?"
Hearing Spider-Man's summons Captain America will have to decide if his touchbase with Bernie can wait.
Spider-Man searches the surrounding area for more clues about the car. He finds broken glass, a spot of a black oily substance, and a screw and washer attached to the remnants of a plastic license plate frame.
Aunt May!
The wall-crawler has been so busy playing super-hero that he almost forgot he needs to make sure Aunt May gets home and doesn't worry about Peter Parker.

Captain America's Health: 2/4 Captain America's Energy: 6/12
Captain Marvel ------------------- Captain Marvel transforms herself into radiowaves, hoping to tune into Doctor Octopus's broadcast frequency.
Late yesterday, Thor told Captain Marvel and Starfox of his need to find the Runestaff of Kano Tharnn, a long staff with a lion's head. [see Thor #332] Hopefully, it's location has been found, and that is why Thor couldn't join them. Captain Marvel has met Spider-Man and the Thing before, but this is only her second day as a full-fledged Avenger. [having been promoted from trainee to replace Iron Man in Avengers 231] Is she ready to face Doctor Octopus without the rest of the Avengers by her side?
Scanning the airwaves for the villian's message, Captain Marvel discovers that Thor was right by saying that Doctor Octopus hath broadcast an evil threat, because he's not broadcasting any more. However, if any new messages do hit the airwaves, Monica Rambeau is now ready to intercept them.
Captain Marvel's Health: 2/3 Captain Marvel's Energy: 2/9 [Stones spent to retain radiowave energy form for 3 more panels.]
Thing ------- The Thing knows that Reed and Sue (Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman) are at the Hospital with Franklin. Annihilus sure did a number on Ben's girlfriend, but the creep even stooped so low as to hurting the Richards' toddler son. If Annihilus wasn't killed in the explosion that sucked him into the Negative Zone and brought the Fantastic Four out, Ben would've moidered the creep himself. [see Fantastic Four 256 for details]
That still doesn't account for where Johnny was, but it's no surprise that the Human Torch was busy elsewhere. Darn irresponsible that kid can be sometimes.
Alright, there are plenty of shopkeepers about, who should the Thing talk to first? The grocer? The newspaper stand guy? The flowershop lady? Does it really matter?

Captain Marvel is a little discouraged. She hoped the Doc would be a blow hard. Oh well, she wishes she had more of scientific mind like the Vision, because she has no idea if this is something she can do, but she is going to try. Captain Marvel begins to concentrate, to try and see any residual energy that could be still in the air that may be Doc Ock's former transmission. This is probably beyond my capability, but I am going to give it a shot anyway.

*I really need to talk to Bernie, but other things must be done. Hopefully I will have time to talk to Bernie after dealing with this license plate*
I walk to Spider Man and collect the plate
"I'll see what our friends in blue can do for us, Spider Man. Good work."
I take the license plate to the officer in charge at the scene and ask him to call in the plate and find out where the vehicle was registered and whom it was registered to.

Aunt May! He looks for her in the crowd of people! Finding her he slids down his web so softly. "Are you May Parker? Peter is worried sick about you! He has sent me here to find ya, he headed home said he would meet you there. OFFICER!!! Could see that this nice lady finds her way home please?" Peter would take her himself but now he had to help hisnew team find the Doc Oc!

Captain Marvel ------------------- Captain Marvel wishes she had more of scientific mind like the Vision, but does not wish to share his condition. The Vision collapsed after penetrating the energy-sapping null-field which Annihilus had created in Midtown. It turned him off as if he were some kind of machine. Reed Richards said it was just a matter of time before the Vision's body healed itself. However, he looks so lifeless now, lying still in a metal cocoon plugged into a high-tech monitoring device in the Avengers basement-level Medical Center. [see Avengers 233 and 234]
Monica fails to detect any residual energy from Doc Ock's former transmission. She thought this would probably beyond her capability. However, it could just be that Doctor Octopus knew how to cover his tracks.
Captain Marvel's Health: 2/3 Captain Marvel's Energy: 2/9 [Stones spent to retain radiowave energy form for 2 more panels.]
Captain America -------------------- The officer in charge at the scene accepts the license plate from Captain America and calls in the number to find out where the vehicle was registered and whom it was registered to. The request gets escalated immediately because it is for Captain America!
"Yes, that is correct," Captain America overhears the police captain say after a short wait. "Bravo-Sierra-November-7-2-8. Over."
>ttccchhh< "LGM Rent-A-Truck," comes the voice over the radio. "That's Lima-Golf-Mike Rent-A-Truck. Over." >ttccchhh<
"Roger. Where was the vehicle registered? Over."
>ttccchhh< "Manhattan. However, there are >tchhhzzzzwwwwiiirrrch< offices listed. Over." >ttccchhh<
"Please copy. We had some static on the line."
Captain Marvel has a telling look on her face like, 'Oops. Sorry, my bad.'
>ttccchhh< "There are 23 LGM rent-a-truck offices in Manhattan. Over." >ttccchhh<
"Thank you lieutenant. Stand by for further instruction. Over and out." The officer then turns to Captain America. "Did you get all that?"
Captain America's Health: 2/4 Captain America's Energy: 5/12
Spider-Man -------------- Aunt May believes Spider-Man's story, but still looks a little suspicious. Peter doesn't have a very good track record with Aunt May these days. It wasn't very long ago that he left May and her boyfriend Nate abruptly after seeing the Vulture on their new cable TV. He hated to leave then too, because his Aunt just left the room to go get them some pie. [see The Amazing Spider-Man 240]
At least Aunt May trusts Spider-Man enough not to worry about her nephew, and the cop will ensure no one else tries to steal her purse before he can meet her at the old homestead.
The Thing is nearby socializing with some of the local shopkeeps. Maybe he could use a wing-man. (Aw nuts! Was that a Vulture joke?)
Spider-Man's Health: 2/4 Spider-Man's Energy: 6/12
Thing ------- After spending a few weeks (or was it months?) in the Negative Zone, Ben Grimm thought he'd feel more comfortable back on earth with fellow humans. [The FF were in the Negative Zone for Fantastic Four issues 251 through 256, but only hours past on Earth due to a diffence in the passage of time between the zones.] However, here he was, surrounded by warm blooded homo-sapiens, and they all look at him like he is an alien.
It's probably best to get this investigation over with quick, so the Thing can go clobber someone. There's Spidey chatting up some old granny. Maybe he can talk to these clowns and save Ben the trouble.

Man, this ain't working. I 'll keep listening encase Doc sends out another message. Well the license plate is from a LGM Rent a Truck that's like the ol' needle in the hay stack. I'll look around and see if I can find anymore clues, since I doubt anyone would want to talk with a radio girl like me. Captain Marvel chuckles to herself. She scans the scene once more for anymore physical clues.

* Ben could be anywhere but here today. He could have been at the hospital by now, but no!, he had to be some sort of friggin hero. He had to be the " Thing". *
* Ben figured the sooner they figured this mess out the sooner he could go be with Alicia, so he made his way to the nearest newspaper vendor to see if perhaps they happened to see something of interest, or perhaps even which way the van headed?*
