Port Jefferson, Long Island. The home of Madelaine and William Drake--a typical retired couple, living on a typical block, in a typical suburban town. It's only been a matter of days since Angel, Beast and Iceman joined together with Gargoyle, Moondragon and Valkyrie as the new Defenders! Robert "Bobby" Drake hasn't even told his parents that The Iceman lives again! But is now the best time to break the news? Warren "The Angel" Worthington doesn't think they've thanked the Drakes yet for the dinner invitation. His girlfriend Candy Southern and he are having a wonderful evening. Why spoil it? "It's been too long since I've seen my sonny-boy and his two closest friends!" Mrs. Drake says, smiling at Bobby. "My son, the accountant! I'm so happy you've put all that silly super-heroing behind you, Robert."So what's wrong with the super-hero trade, Hank "The Beast" McCoy wonders. He never gave it up--and just look at what it's done for him! Angel's Health: 3/3 Angel's Energy: 9/9

"Excuse me, Mr. Drake, but I feel I must interject. Being a Superhero is not "silly" it is in fact quite serious. Of course being an accountant is a fine occupation as well."

"Oh come on Hank. No shop talk until after dessert, please. Why don't you, Bobby and Mr. Drake join me outside for a few cigars? Leave Candy and Mrs. Drake alone for some girl talk? Hopefully Candy can get the recipe for that delicious roast."

Yeah....about that Pop...see...well lets have them cigars first.
Bobby took a steadying breathe, his mind racing.
How am I going to break this to them?

"Yeah... and that occupation almost got you quite seriously killed a hundred times!!!" Mr. Drake vents after Hank's comment.
"Robert," Mrs. Drake asks her son, "are you trying to tell us something?"

"It may have nearly got us killed a hundred times, but each one of those times we were trying to protect people from evil mutants and other menaces. With our powers we can do this where no one else can."

"A valid concern. However, consider that through doing what we did, we prevented many other parents from having to receive that news about they're own children."

Robert "Bobby" Drake
Bobby nodded... he couldn't have said it better himself, had he even cared to try.
-You know, dad, nowadays... taking a walk outside could get someone killed in a car accident. Should people not take a walk anymore, if only because of the risks? ...Well... Okay, I'll admit it, that isn't exactly the same amount of risk. But, what I really mean is, every day, there are thousands of people who risk their lives so that others can keep living their peaceful existence, with the only thing they have to worry about is to make ends meet, wether or not they should talk to that girl they love in secret and the risks of taking that walk outside. Police officers, firemen, soldiers in the army, security guards... and countless others. All these folks risk their lives everyday to protect ours. The thing is... most of 'em can't stop supervillains.
He paused, visibly not sure how to go on with his reasoning.
-I, uh... all I mean, is... Superheroes are a necessity the world can't afford to not have. Without them, people would suffer... people would die. And the risks of taking a simple walk outside would increase exponentially. Without superheroes, people I love... like you two... would go from worrying about their son risking his life to worrying to see every day to risk being their last, as well as that of everyone else they know.
He stopped again, this time for longer. He played with his thumbs nervously, searching for the right way to go on. Biting his lip, he decided that there was none.
-The world needs superheroes, there's not even a shadow of a doubt about it in my mind. What I am trying to tell you and dad, mom... is... well you see... is that... anyone with an average brain and the will to do it can become an accountant. But only I... only I can help my friends to protect those I love, those I care for... against that which threatens them.
Clenching his fists, now more silent than a tomb, he waited for the incoming tidal wave of disapproval. It was out. He had said it. Well, not clearly, but still... it was a start. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Start H: 3/3 E: 9/9

Robert "Bobby" Drake
Bobby seemed like he'd really wish to be elsewhere doing anything but this, but it had to be done. He had to go through this, because that was the only way out. No matter the results, he had chosen his path.
-I'm truly sorry... I am. Mom... dad. You've always been good to me. No, more than that. I'm very lucky to have parents such as you. All these years, you raised me as well as you could, to teach me what was right and what was wrong. I owe both of you everything, and I would love to become the accountant you'd like me to be.
He forced himself to smile:
-However, you also teached me two very important things, things that I hold very dear in my life. First, to listen to my heart and trust in myself. And second, but not least, to be honest with others, and to myself. Today, I am trying to do both. My heart is telling me my future does not lies in accountacy, no matter how good I am in it...
He looked at his father, then his mother, right into their eyes.
-And I'd be lying to both myself and the two of you if I told here and now that my calling was being anything or anyone else but Iceman. That's just... who I am. I just... I'd wish...
Robert Drake sighed. He hated being serious. It was so much easier to be funny, to joke around... but when the time came to really show his feelings to anyone, he just felt like a complete schmuck.
-...I just wish you can forgive me. But that's the path I've chosen. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Start H: 3/3 E: 9/9

"Oh, dear." is all that Mrs. D. can say. Mr. D. stares at Bobby, absentmindedly pouring his coffee into his lap. All in all, Iceman's parents are taking it rather well. Mom 'n' Dad seem a little better by the time they leave. Bobby's mother even stops crying for a minute. The Beast is also looking forward to going home. He got three new "Gumby" video-tapes in the mail today! Bobby Drake hasn't seen a "Gumby" since he was a kid, but he fondly remembers the one with the chicken that ate the radioactive feed. But more importantly, Iceman wonders if Moondragon's still awake. But before the ex-X-Men reach the New Defender's home and headquarters, the Beast spots... GIANT FLYING ROBOTS???!!!Beast's Health: 4/4 Beast's Energy: 12/12
Iceman's Health: 3/3 Iceman's Energy: 9/9 "What?" Moondragon cries. "How dare you two so brazenly intrude upon my privacy!"Gargoyle just doesn't understand that girl. Moondragon says she wants to be part of the New Defenders--and yet she goes out of her way to treat them all like dirt. Isaac knows what it's like to be an outcast. Heck, he wasn't exactly welcomed when he first hitched his wagon to this team. But that lady truly tries his patience. Gargoyle's Health: 5/5 Gargoyle's Energy: 15/15
