I saw RIPD today. I laughed quite a bit for such a stupid movie. Ryan Reynolds did something very smart; he didn't play the "joke a minute" guy. He left that to Bridges, and it really worked.

Just got back from Much Ado - it was so much fun. There's nothing quite like it.

Caught Wolverine on a whim.
I absolutely, without reservation disliked the first installment (Origins). I was ok with the casting (Deadpool/Gambit)... but just... No. That was horribly scripted, cannon butchery aside. Blegh.
And I'm usually a movie carebear.
This new one?
By comparison, and even on it's own, a MUCH MUCH MUCH better movie. Seriously. The preview trailers left me dubious, But, I liked it. To me, it really did feel MUCH closer to the old school Wolverine/Patch books of my youth. The Wolverine I actually liked.
I think it would have been just fine without the Jean Grey dreams... but between that and the post-credits teaser, they're clearly just stage setting for DoFP. So, if it's part of the "We're sorry, but let us try to fix it... even though we both know we'll let you down" package... whatever.

I really liked The Wolverine as well. My only complaints are about the final sequence. Silver Samurai being a huge robot was stupid.
Everything else... well just what Dhark said, it was a loving homage to the classic Wolverine solo stories that I really enjoyed. My wife, who has basically no exposure to comic books except the movies I've dragged her to and the sessions of Marvel Heroic she's played in, also really liked the movie, and says she's looking forward to Days of Future Past now.

Watched it a few days ago with the "It can't be worst than the first one mindset" and I enjoyed it, despite the Jean dreams and the Silver Samurai thing being... very, very, very awkward.

You know what bothered me about the dreams with Jean? Why wasn't her hair red? I know it wasn't exactly flaming in the other movies, but at least they made some effort to make it red(ish). In this one it seemed like her hair was ordinary old Famke Jannsen color.

I wonder how the general public that didn't watch or remember X3 reacted to the dream sequence. I mean, the basic idea of "he messed up, and now she's dead" idea is clear, but it feels quite weird that they decided to put that into the movie.

Glad so many of you enjoyed The Wolverine; maybe I'll go see it after all. Just got back from Much Ado - it was so much fun. There's nothing quite like it. ~TWF This... is NOT showing in my local theaters. WTF?!?!! I only caught it at a pretty small theater during a special double-bill (with Cabin in the Woods). I think the original run was pretty short. ~TWF

My nomination for worst movie I've seen recently (and possibly, the worst big budget studio film of all time) is Cloud Atlas. What a complete waste of time.

I actually liked the Silver Samurai. Also, not a robot. Just a huge armor. Although I didn't like Viper as a villain here and the beginning was so boring that I thought the rest of the movie was gonna be bad. But those last two bits are my only complaints.

Saw Pacific Rim the other day. Felt like Spongebob Squarepants' friend Patrick, opening head to scoop brain out and leave to one side. That said my son would absolutely love this as he's addicted to old Godzilla movies at the moment, and the things in this would make Godzilla look like a homesick hamster. Overall, it was ok. Big things hitting other stuff. I've seen worse. Chose that over Wolverine and despite liking Hugh Jackman I really have no interest in the X men family (or Fantastic Four, should that ever come back) superhero movies at the moment.
Saw a trailer for Desolation of Smaug. Haven't even seen the Hobbit yet, not too bothered about it. Elysium seemed interesting enough, first I've seen of Jodie Foster in years and Matt Damon is always pretty good I reckon.

I saw Red 2 yesterday, I found it as funny and entertaining as the first one, faster paced and more agile even. I also watched Pacific Rim, and enjoyed it like crazy, awesome movie made with clear intent and hitting some soft spots of mine. Crazy good.

Glad to see more people enjoying Pacific Rim. North Americans didn't seem to care much for it, but it had a big foreign release which has so-far accounted for over 70% of its box office results. It brought in $76 million in China alone; still waiting for the Japanese data.
Basically this means there will be a sequel.

As I said, I want the sequel, particularly if they find a way to bring Godzilla into the mix. Will it be stupid? Absolutely. Have I been entertained by stupid things in the past? Absolutely 8)
Unlike Gris, I was (slightly) disappointed by Red 2. It just didn't have the entertainment value of the first one. It also didn't help that the actress that plays Willis' girlfriend in those movies has no real range. She's funny in small doses, but I'd seen RIPD relatively recently, and it was just an overload.
