... so Martha has been mutated by exposure to the TARDIS. But everyone else who traveled on it is fine. Yep. Seems legit

For the Ponds, I really like Rory and find him to be a fairly empathetic character, but I just cannot stand Amy. At all. It started with her being all up and cozy with the Doctor while engaged to Rory and hasn't really subsided.

Amy Pond is, for me, the perfect example of what's wrong with the "new womanhood" in literature. In order to be "strong" a woman has to treat her man like utter garbage, expecting him to take it, follow her orders, and never, ever, ever dare to have an opinion of his own...
Which is pretty much Rory until the very last season they were in. Which is why I can't respect Rory, either. I dig the fact that he did all of those heroic things for Amy. I don't dig the fact that it took him YEARS to tell her to shut up for once.

That being said, it can be done right if someone reasonable tries to do it, and I am still hoping that eventually, someone will.

I think I liked Rory, at least initially, because he was the first person to actually call the Doctor out on how ridiculous everything was. It was some kind of amazed indifference to it all. I can't find the exact quote, but in his first episode, when they're in the hospital and Prisoner Zero is doing its weird "taking the shape of others" thing, he makes some clever observation that struck me. Throughout series 5, I remember him being very competent, in spite of being the butt monkey. He was Mickey if Mickey were useful; the audience perspective on the show, a target for comic relief, but he also had useful skills and never seemed to be set back by pretty much anything.

Anyone played the REALLY old Dr. Who RPG? I played it back in high school and a little after. It was okay, but I had tons more fun when I got to port my time lord over into our Star Trek game (FAFSA).

In fact, I'd say it's been pretty common for "Companions" to point out The Doctor the utter ridiculousness of some of their situations. The reason I CAN'T find it in my heart to think Rory is special is because he didn't do it because the situation was ridiculous... he did it because he was jealous of The Doctor. Rory is a Beta Male with Alpha Male abilities, which only makes him all the more frustrating.

Only one I played was Dr.Who: Adventures in Time and Space, the Tenth Doctor version. I don't know what the very old Dr.Who RPG is.

Or one of them, I don't know if there was more than one before the newest/current one. It was one of those old "boxed games" with really minimal rules. As with all games of it's type, I give it a thumbs down because nothing sucks worse than being the "normal" person in a game with people who have powers.

Well, as the guy in that game who had power I enjoyed it... I'm sure the guy who got to play The Doctor in MY game enjoyed it too. In fact, I'm pretty sure nearly everyone who ever gets to play the one person who is actually powerful and competent in those games enjoys it. When I played that idiotic Buffy game at a Con, we actively tried to get our Slayer killed, just to feel like we'd accomplished something.

Paranoia will always be my favorite tabletop. Me too. After I found out what an awful RPG is, I used it's otherwise worthless pages to protect my table from years and years of dice abuse. (Seriously, how can that game even be considered an RPG? It's more like a sadism training course for GMs and a patience testing facility for players)
