Assault on Avengers Mansion! 890 Fifth Avenue, New York City... Avengers Mansion: "Please excuse the interruption Captain Marvel," Jarvis says with the utmost of politeness. "Mistress Wanda called to ask if I had noticed anything amiss. I assured her that nothing out of the ordinary is going on around here. However, I promised to tell the Avenger on monitor duty tonight to pay special attention to our security net." The last time Captain Marvel was on monitor duty, the computer found a lot of gamma radiation in Rathbone Park, and the day ended with a giant robot threatening to crack New York City open like an egg. "Mistress Wanda also said she will be leaving her house in Leonia, New Jersey shortly, and that Dr. Stephen Strange will be dropping by the mansion later... as her guest." Full Health and Energy

Doctor Strange
Alias: Stephen Vincent Strange
Base of Operations: New York City, New York
Occupation: Sorcerer Supreme
Place of Birth: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Classification: Human
Marital Status: Single
Powers / Abilities: Doctor Strange is one of the most powerful sorcerers in existence. Like most sorcerers, he draws his power from three primary sources: the invocation of powerful mystic entities or objects, the manipulation of the universe's ambient magical energy, and his own psychic resources. Strange's magical repertoire includes energy projection and manipulation, matter transformation, animation of inanimate objects, teleportation, illusion-casting, mesmerism, thought projection, astral projection, dimensional travel, time travel and mental possession, to name a few. The full range of his abilities is unknown. Doctor Strange's powers are sometimes less effective against strictly science-based opponents, although he can overcome this limitation with effort.
Doctor Strange is a skilled athlete and martial artist with substantial medical and magical knowledge. Though an expert surgeon, Strange's nerve-damaged hands prevent him from performing surgery except when supplemented by magic.
|
|
Background / History: Stephen Strange was a brilliant, ambitious, and somewhat arrogant neurosurgeon whose meteoric career was cut short when an accident injured his hands. Although he was offered many consulting positions, his pride prevented him from accepting. After Strange’s fortune was lost on many failed attempts at finding a “miracle” cure for his injured hands, he quickly degenerated into a drunken derelict.
Strange then heard of a learned man in Tibet, known only as the Ancient One, who could work miracles. Strange completed the journey across the ocean and the frozen wastes of the Himalayan Mountains, and just as he reached the limits of his endurance, he stumbled upon the Ancient One’s palace. Unsure of Strange’s worthiness, the Ancient One proved reluctant to accept the former derelict as his pupil. But when Strange warned the sorcerer of the treachery of Baron Mordo, a student of the Ancient One, Strange became the sorcerer’s disciple.
In time, the Ancient One left this mortal sphere and the position of the Earth Dimension’s Sorcerer Supreme passed to Doctor Strange. He has, during his tenure, successfully thwarted many would-be magical tyrants, including his oldest nemesis, Baron Mordo; prevented numerous extradimensional invasions by other Sorcerers Supreme, most notably Dormammu and Umar of the Dark Dimension and Tiboro of the Sixth Dimension; and stopped the spread of chaos by its determined agents, Nightmare, Shuma-Gorath, and Satannish. If a man’s greatness is measured by the might of his enemies, then Doctor Strange is surely one of the greatest heroes of all time.
Unaware of his position of Sorcerer Supreme, the world at large believes Strange is no more than an eccentric authority on the occult.
Strange resides in his mansion, the Sanctum Sanctorum, located in Greenwich Village in New York City.
Clea, currently the Sorceress Supreme of the Dark Dimension, has been the only disciple of Doctor Strange. They were lovers but the current status of the relationship is unknown.
| Weapons / Paraphernalia: Doctor Strange wears the Eye of Agamotto, an amulet which can radiate light, pierce illusions, probe minds, open extradimensional portals, and perform other feats. He has a Cloak of Levitation which enables him to fly without expending personal magical energy. He possesses several other mystic artifacts, including the Orb of Agamotto, which he can use to observe events virtually anywhere in the multiverse. He has a library of mystic tomes, some of which, such as the Book of the Vishanti, can serve as power sources or weapons in their own right.
| Team Affiliations: Defenders

The streets are quiet tonight... maybe a little too quiet.
It's like every bum and lowlife suddenly vanished, including Hannibal King's contacts who thought they'd seen Darkholder Cultists in New York City. Maybe King has been a detective too long, but something out there doesn't smell right to him. Or maybe it comes from being a vampire for four... going on five years now.
Hannibal heads to Doctor Strange's Greenwich Village sanctum with nothing new to report. As he approaches the front door, it is opened by Doctor Strange's manservant, Wong, before the undead detective even gets a chance to knock.
"Good Evening, Mr. King." Doctor Strange greets from the back of the foyer. His secretary, Sara, stands beside him looking puzzled.
"How did you know--?" Sara asks the Sorceror Supreme.
"My astral self spotted him outside." Dr. Strange answers before addresing Hannibal King once more. "Any more word on the Darkholder Cult, Hannibal?"
Sara moves behind Dr. Strange, keeping her distance and a cautious eye on Hannibal King, even though Hannibal told her on a prior meeting that he never sank his teeth into any living thing!

Hannibal looked around briefly, collecting his thoughts before he spoke. I... can't say for certain. Everything is quiet. As much as I hate being cliched... too quiet, honestly. Something doesn't seem right Strange. I can't help but feel like something bigs about to hit.

"I agree, Hannibal. Something is afoot. Still..." Doctor Strange motions for King to follow him, so they can speak in private, before continuing. "...I have made some progress. I have located the Darkhold!"
The Darkhold is a book that Doctor Strange told Hannibal is being sought after by the ruler of Earth's vampires, Vlad Dracula!

For reasons perhaps different than Strange's, the Darkhold is of intense interest to King as well. His eyes narrow at the thought of Dracula and his minions, scurrying over the world, and he exalts in the chance to deny them a prize.
A possible location of the Darkhold? Do you want me to go retrieve it?

A late-model car pulls out of the driveway of a modest house in Leonia, New Jersey, because a most unusual woman found her evening suddenly interrupted by an even more unusual visitor. In other words, Doctor Strange has need this night of The Scarlet Witch!Stephen Strange's conjurations led him to Wanda Maximoff, because she holds knowledge which he must tap. He came to her even though Wanda is just a novice when it comes to the mystic arts. Even as an Avenger, The Scarlet Witch relied more upon her mutant powers than on any magic she might have learned. Willing her to see and hear his electroplasmic astral form, Doctor Strange told the reserve Avenger that he seeks a book of such latent sorcerous power that it had frustrated all his attempts to locate it. In desperation, he wove a spell to locate the person who last possessed it, which turned out to be Wanda Maximoff, The Scarlet Witch! "Tell me," Doctor Strange asked. "What do you know of The Darkhold? Wanda wishes she had never heard of it. She had the book last, though she hardly possessed it ---- things were more the other way around. Through the power of that cursed book, she was possessed by the demon, Chthon. She barely escaped with her soul. It took the combined wills of the Avengers to free her. Afterward, she made sure that The Darkhold would never fall into unwary hands. It's locked in a secure vault in the Avengers Mansion. However, Stephen Strange impressed upon her that he must have it, even though coming into contact with The Darkhold is dangerous ---- even for as mighty a sorcerer as Doctor Strange! This is a risk that the Sorcerer Supreme must take, because The Darkhold is being sought by a cult under the dominance of the vampire-lord, Dracula!Wanda believed Dracula to be just a legend, but Doctor Strange says that in truth, he exists, and the Earth's Sorcerer Supreme learned the hard way not to underestimate him. If Doctor Strange does not lay his hands upon The Darkhold, Dracula will... no mater where it is hidden. The Darkhold must be neutralized. Doctor Strange will meet The Scarlet Witch at Avengers Mansion within the hour, so Wanda Maximoff gets in her car and drives to 890 Fifth Avenue, New York City. Not seeing much point in trying to lie to Strange, Hannibal rubbed his temples a moment. 4 years or so... I don't exactly celebrate the anniversary.
A minute was too long. You'd think I would have forgotten what I missed about being human by now.
<Edited for general "D'oh!" moment where I lost a decade somwhow>
<Edited from 40 years to 4 via GM. I may do this every once in a while when needed to speed the game along. - andyman>

The Darkhold was hardly a matter to be trifled with... This, Wanda knew from experience. However, at the pressing of Dr. Stange, she relented to doing what she could to aid his efforts... Perhaps the sorceror supreme of earth would be able to handle its abilities, if only temporarily to fight back a dangerous threat.
As she arrived at the mansion, she sighed softly to herself... Her mind still resting on other problems, other troubles that weighed heavily on her heart... For now though, she tried to let duty dull her mind as she entered.
Of course she couldn't take the book out on her own... so she proceeded to find out who was currently on duty.

"I believe you, Hannibal. That is why... Eh? That light!"
A bright light shines from Doctor Strange's Chamber of Shadows! That can mean but one thing!
"Get back Hannibal!" the Master of the Mystic Arts warns upon entering his Chamber of Shadows. "The light of the Orb of Agamotto is as painful to a vampire as the sun itself!"
Peering into the glowing ball, Stephen Strange explains, "I keyed the orb to react to any major mystic disruption of a vampric nature. Perhaps it has at last detected where our foes are bound!"
"Oshtur preserve us!"
"It's Avengers Mansion!"

Hannibal didn't need any extra warnings from Strange, and he sunk back, moving as far away as possible, preferably toward a door that he can put between himself and the artificial sun.
Avengers Mansion? How fast can we get there?
