An hour ago, Professor X sequestered himself with the Fixer, after removing the villain's various gizmos and gadgets and dumping them on the kitchen table. Suddenly, a calm, familiar voice resounds within the X-Men's heads: the telepathic contact of Professor X. "Come to the Library. We have a small problem." There is no urgency in the former mentor's voice. Xavier, thoughtful as always, is waiting in the library with a woozy Fixer (in a bathrobe). A video recorder is set up between them. Professor X nods toward the group. "Mr. Ebersol has explained his rather rude incursion on our Sunday morning. There is nothing to fear. I have fought Ebersol before. [OOC: in MTU #118] Without his gear he is almost safe, and my mental scan of his mind will alert me of any danger. I thought all of you should see this." The Professor pushes the play button on the video recorder. the television screen shows a grisly scene: a berserk Wolverine slashing Mentallo to death in a rooftop battle. The tape has no sound, but skylights and a water tower are visible behind the two men. The tape runs out and the Fixer breaks the silence. "Up to about four months ago Mentallo was my partner. We started together, he and I, running rings around S.H.I.E.L.D.. A couple of months back, he disappeared, without so much as a warning or a note. I was suspicious, and went looking for him. Poor choice of partners almost landed me in prison recently, but I escaped. [OOC: in Day of the Octopus] I then found this waiting for me in my mailbox, along with this address. I came expecting security systems, but nothing like this. Your hairless leader tells me you're clean, but I'm not too quick to believe him. If you're innocent, then who killed Mentallo?" Logan couldn't believe his eyes. He was seeing the same thing as the others... even he had a hard time not believing that this man was... him. And then again, never had he seen this man, this Mentallo... and even less had he killed him.
-... hmph. What can I say...? All that comes to mind is the proverbial "never seen this guy before", "that wasn't me". And God knows I'm almost never believing that whenever some bad guy says that kind of nonsense.
He breathes for a second.
-And yet I say it. Look, bub... and all of you also. I'm far from a saint. You all know that. I'm not even a good man, and I did a lot of things in my life that'll probably keep me in purgatory for a long time before sending me to hell, and I have the blood of many people on my hands and claws, some of them that didn't necessarily deserved what happened to them but to whom it happened anyway, 'cause they were on my way while I wasn't myself. But I swear I didn't kill this guy. And to go even further, I never saw him either, or at least I don't remember.
He turns to the professor:
-You can read my mind if you want, professor... In fact, I'd like you to do so. If that tape's not a fake trying to get Ebersol and I kill each other, whoever's done that sure looks a lot like me...
Wolverine apparently has other things to say, but he waits for the professor's answer and waits to hear the others' comments. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Start H: 4/4 E: 12/12

Orroro stared at the screen quietly for several moments, visibly shocked by what she saw on the screen. She then turned her attention to Logan as he verbally defended himself against the video.
Pursing her lips thoughtfully, she folded her gloved hands under her chin and rested it. "It ... is unusual to imagine Wolverine to do something like this. Particularly if it happened recently... As he said, he has done many things in his past, but if he says he is innocent of this, I am tempted to believe him.
"It would not be unusual for an individual to pose as Wolverine, in the proper costume and faux claws... It is not as if we have not experienced others posing themselves as people we know in the past."

Rogue stood off to the side tugging on her gloves to make sure they were good and tight. She couldn't believe what she was seeing.
"Shoot y'all. I've had Logan's psyche rollin' around in m'ah skull once." Rogue tapped her temple with her two fingers for emphasis. "Wolverine jus' wouldn't deny kill'en anyone if he did."
She made a point of making eye contact with Fixer.
"Mr. Ebersol. You got y'er self the wrong man."

Nightcrawler BAMF'ed into the room as soon as he heard Professors calling them. He landed in crounched pose on a nearest table. This was definetely much more comfortable then staying straight on the ground.
Im with Wolverine. After all, he has a lot of enemies, ya? One of them could just tried to frame him for revenge. But the question is- who? Wolverine, you know someone who could do this?

-Damn right, says Logan when Rogue makes her point known. Said it once, say it again: I'm no saint, but I'm no liar. If I killed this guy, I'd say so, plain and simple. And even then, he would have needed to do somethin' awful or really, but hell really, drive me mad.
When Nightcrawler asked him if he knew anyone who could have done that to perhaos frame him, Logan shrugged:
-You know as well as I do, Kurt, I have dozens of foes that have the power, the technology or the money to perform that kinda trick... and more than half of 'em're crazy enough to do it. Darn... could be anyone... anyone who has at least some kinda way to alter his appearance, generate illusions or what do I know, perhaps even alter what one can see on video tapes. Mystique could have done it, but I really don't see why she'd do that. She ain't my personnal enemy after all... I really have no idea who might have done that. Could be nearly anyone...
Thinking about something he just said, Logan asks:
-Professor, have we verified the video tape? For all I know, we haven't seen Mentallo's body, only a tape of him getting killed. Is there any chance that it's a very well-made fake?

OOC PostIt's 1983. Sabertooth has only appeared in the comics as an Iron Fist villian and Rogue joined the X-Men only 4 issues ago. After leaving her foster mother Mystique to join the X-Men, Rogue only absorbed Wolverine's powers once. This is that story for those of you without X-Men issue 173:

OOC: I changed my post as well. Easy fix. Thanks for the time frame. I knew we were in the 80's but I thought we were further along. No sweat.

The whole train of thought didn't sit right with Rogue. She figured she better speak up.
"Look Y'all. I know I'm the new girl on the team but, I think we mah be lookin' at this from the wrong angle. It wasn't that long ago I was on the other side fightin' y'all an' if I wanted to hurt or even kill Logan I sure wouldn't spend the effort to dupe this guy." Rogue pointed with a thumb at Fixer before continuing.
"Way I see it. We should be focusin' on Fixers enemies 'cause lets face it. Sendin' him in after wolverine was a death wish."

(OOC: Tell me... I couldnt find any reference whether they even know who Mystique is by that time, so I skipped her. And I definetely wont risk calling her "mother") I'm glad you brought that up. Nightcrawler met Mystique back in 1980, when this happened... But when the German-born mutant turned to face his foe, Mystique had already disappeared. Since we're in 1983 game time (between Uncanny X-Men issues 174 and 175), this info from X-Men issue 142 is fair game!

When Wolverine says he's innocent, Xavier believes him.
The Fixer however isn't convinced by the X-Men's arguments. "Of course Xavier's hired gun would suggest that the tape is a fake. Don't you think I would've already check for that, you two-bit assassin!"
While watching the tape, Ariel noticed that several factories and warehouses were visible in the background. However, having grown up in Deerfield, Illinois, Kitty's not as familiar with New York as some of the other X-Men that had been living here longer.

Rogue stepped away from the wall putting herself between the argumentative Fixer and Wolverine. That last crack at being an assassin wasn't a brilliant move on the Fixers part in her opinion so she figured she'd set him straight before Wolverine did.
"You jus' don't know when to quit do you sugah? Wolverine ain't your mahn. Now we're all jus' as curious as you are so why don't you do the smart thing and let us help you find the real killer. Other wise you may as well get yourself gone 'cause you ain't gonna get another crack at us now that we know your story."
Rogue tilted her head and crossed her arms defiantly before continuing.
"Or do you wan' us to pummel you now and get it over with 'cause I ain't had the pleasure yet."
Rogue may be new, but she was an X-men now and she was very protective of her new family.
