ONE MAN IN SEARCH OF...HIMSELF! It's not meeting the lady's parents that has Steve Rogers so crazy. It's what that meeting means. It's one step toward solidifying his relationship with... "Steve-- You made it!"...Bernie--?"I thought that stupid train would never get here!"Oh, Bernie: So soft. So warm. So beautiful. Captain America's Health: 4/4 Captain America's Energy: 12/12

Steve hugged Bernie, doing his best to appear calm. Weird. He could charge into enemy fire without showing a hint of fear, but now he was having trouble concealing his nerves about meeting a girls parents...
"Am I late?" He tried to put on his best smile.

"You're really uptight about this, aren't you?" Bernie knows Steve so well, sometimes he thinks she knows him better than he knows himself. "Believe me, Steve. Mom and Dad don't bite."Bernie grounds him. Just being with her makes him believe Steve Rogers can exist without Captain America. And perhaps that's what's really scaring him. "Y'know, everyone's so excited about this dinner." She says, leading him to her car. "Dad's pulled out his best suit. Mom's been cooking for two days. My sister Jeannie even cleaned her room!"Awkward. He feels so blasted awkward. What if he botches this? What if he says something stupid and her parents hate him? As Captain America, he's sure of himself... he knows what to do. How to react to any given situation. But as Steve Rogers... "Lovely night. Isn't it?" Bernie asks from the driver's seat. ...clumsy, uncertain... out of touch with the times... a blank slate. "Penny for your thoughts."Captain America's Health: 4/4 Captain America's Energy: 12/12

"You'd be getting the worse of that deal, I think." He forced himself to laugh. "Nothing to worry about, just a bit nervous about meeting your parents. After all, its been quite a while since I've been courting."

"I hate driving past here," Bernie says. "Brand's been like a tomb since they shut it down. Gives me the creeps."The Avengers had their share of run-ins with the Brand Corporation. Brand facilities were even creepier when they were open and operating. These seemingly-innocent "research centers" churned out more horrors than Frankenstein's castle. "Bernie, be careful!"
Whatever it was, it could easily be some leftover Brand Corporation horror. It was a good thing he had his shield in his portfolio!
"Why don't you pull over and let me investigate?"

[glow=black,2,300] SKREEEEEE[/glow] After almost running over the man in the road, Bernie pulls over. Deathlock?Could he mean the Deathlock Cyborg Reed Richards told Captain America about? Here at Brand? It's a good thing Steve's special portfolio is in the trunk. "H-he's probably some local crazy who hangs out in the abandoned buildings." Bernie says placing her gentle hand on Steve's arm. "If you're worried, we can call the police."Captain America's Health: 4/4 Captain America's Energy: 12/12

Steve reached over and popped the trunk, then walked to the back of the car and opened his portfolio. Once he was sure the shield was inside, he pulled it out of the trunk and shut it.
"Listen, Bernie, I have to look into this. Maybe I can help the man. You go to your parents and when you get there, call the police and let them know someone broke into this old Brand building. I'll meet you at your parents place as soon as possible."

He's doing it to her again. But these aren't just any abandoned buildings... This is the Brand Corporation. If they're somehow still operating... If they've got their hands on the Deathlok cyborg-- Captain America has to look into this himself! Captain America's Health: 4/4 Captain America's Energy: 12/12

As soon as he was out of sight of Bernie, Steve strapped the shield to his arm and headed in, keeping an eye out for Deathlok... if indeed whatever he saw was Deathlok.

While keeping surveillance, Steve Rogers changes into Captain America. The young man is pale. Frightened. Weak. Best bet is for Cap to keep his guard up--but try to put the stranger at ease. Then maybe he can learn who this guy is and what he knows about a cyborg called... Deathlock!Captain America's Health: 4/4 Captain America's Energy: 12/12

Not sensing too much of a threat, Captain America cautiously approached the young man, trying not to startle him.
"Pardon me, but is there something I can help you with? You should be more careful, running around dangerous places like this in the dark..."

"I've got my reasons for wanting to find him. You could say that Luther Manning is one man in search of... himself!"
"Luther Manning died playing what the big brass euphemistically called war games. That devil Ryker then took my brain, nervous system, and still-living tissue and grafted it all into a synthetic body. They thought they had the perfect cyborg super-soldier on their hands. They thought they had a puppet, but Deathlok showed 'em they still had a man."
"The C.I.A. cloned Manning. They thought transferring his cerebral imprints into the clone would be the same as returning his humanity."
"The idiots! When they were done, the first Luther Manning was still very much alive within that cyborg body. All they'd done was hatch a non-cyborg duplicate. I was... I am Luther Manning..."
"...but I don't feel the least bit human."Captain America's Health: 4/4 Captain America's Energy: 12/12
